I see one review that states this unit will not fit a cast iron sink. Has anyone else dealt with trying to install this on a cast iron sink?

It is installed in two pieces. First there's a tube piece that slips down through the hole in the sink, you put putty under this. Then there's a bracket that goes on the underside and basically pulls the tube insert piece down against the sink and pinches the putty to make a good watertight seal. Then the unit itself simply hangs off this mounting assembly. It's simple really. The only issue I can see is if your sink is somehow so thick that the tube insert piece is not long enough to poke through the sink so the bracket on the underside would be able to attach. But that would have to be a super thick sink. I've seen some cast iron sinks in the past and I don't think they are nearly that thick (they'd weigh a ton!). Read Less

Answer:
I hooked it to a cast iron sink that was approximately 1/2 in thick or less. there is a flange that you can buy to fit a sink that is thicker. However i did not need to use it.

I've not installed it in a cast iron sink. However, the instructions do not point to a problem with this. The main issue is the thickness of the sink where the tail piece goes through (the drain hole.) Most tail pieces are long enough and have enough threads to accommodate a thick cast. Only thing I can think of that might not work is a really old sink, like a farmer's sink from the early 20th Read More

Measure the thickness and the length of threads (twist on the sleeve two or three turns, and measure between the sink side flange and the sleeve) on the tail piece. Remember to add a little for the plumbers putty around the flange. Compare to the thickness of the sink. If the tail piece measure is less than the estimated sink thickness you will need to buy a longer tail piece.
The disposal mounts to any standard diameter tail piece/drain. Read Less

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 34 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Lifetime warranty! Consumer Reports sugested! Bought this unit to replace leaking 1/3 hp Badger unit. Awesome quality & power! Easy 3 bolt mount system even for ammature DIY. Quieter than lower HP units. Doubles as wood chipper. LOL April 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product not great that it was broken. I really like my Legen Series 1.0 HP garbage disposal. It is very quiet and although it is really meant for commercial use it fit nicely under my sink and was easy to install April 28, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by waste king vs. insinkerator evolution excel I bought a house with a recently remodeled kitchen (done about 5 years prior). The house came with the top of the line insinkerator model - the evolution excel. I never really gave it much thought or even realized it was a fancy garbage disposal until it started leaking about 2 years later. The problem got worse and worse and it leaked from both the bottom as well as the back side. I went with this waste king because it has great reviews on a well known e-retailer and it's considerably cheaper than the insinkerator which was conveniently just out of warranty based on the serial number (I called and checked). I didn't want to sink another couple hundred into this supposedly fancy disposal that barely made it 7 years. When I got the insinkerator off the back 'exit' port on the thing was all rusted and corroded. It was like the fancy metal body had rusted and swelled and the rubber gasket that mates to the drain plumbing was no longer making a good seal against the unit. Plus the thing was leaking from the bottom of the unit as well. A shiny piece of garbage if you ask me. So waste king it was and I must say that I am quite happy. It is true that it makes a loud 'click' when you first turn it on. It's not that intrusive and honestly the thing makes a low, inoffensive rumble when running. It is actually much quieter (click and all) than the insinkerator evolution excel.. but that unit was in a bad way so I really can't say how a new insinkerator would compare. The thing grinds up anything you put down it without a hiccup, the instructions even say you can put chicken bones down it. I haven't tried, frankly, but if the installation instructions give you the go ahead you can bet the manufacturer believes in their product. Perhaps the previous owners were abusive with the insinkerator. I don't know. But what could be more abusive than putting chicken bones down a garbage disposal?! I can't think of anything.. and this waste king invites you to do just that. Sheesh. The installation instructions make it out to be harder than it is if you've never done it before (I hadn't but I am handy). You'll need plumbers putty to seal the drain (it's like clay) which is like 5 bucks from home depot. Aside from that, everything you need to install it is in the box. The mounting hardware is not tricky at all but the instructions make it seem like it is. I don't think it will mount to the insinkerator hardware, at least it didn't look like it would. I didn't see a reason to try, I wanted the drain to read "waste king" and not insinkerator since the insinkerator had turned out to be such a disappointment. The box I received had an extra drain gasket in it which was weird since the instructions tell you not to remove the one that's preinstalled on the unit. Moreover, it looks to me like you'll have to drop the unit off the hardware (simple enough and won't require re-puttying your sink) to replace the gasket. It's not a simple pull-out gasket thing like on the insinkerator. This might be an issue if the gasket doesn't hold up well but, on the other hand, you get a larger drain opening or 'throat' than on the insinkerator as a result.. so there's that. All in all, it's a great unit, quieter than the insinkerator evolution excel, and cheaper too but every bit as good at grinding stuff up, maybe better. I think with the insinkerator you're paying a lot for a fancy metal case for the thing which no one will ever see and, as I discovered, will in fact rust. Bottom line, this is the disposal to buy. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by wast king garbage disposal I read prior reviews and it sounded good. Easy to install, looked substantial, but in actual use it was a different story. When you put items to be shredded in the unit and turn it on the unit starts with a very loud Snap as though there is something wrong. Then as you use it you soon discovered that's the way it is designed. Big bang to begin then it settles down into a decent sound, but it spins endlessly without actually doing a decent job of shredding anything. I have had it about 4 months now. I usually do not bother to write reviews, except I thought this time the product was so bad I should let other potential buyers to do a bit more research before buying Waste King. October 18, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product - except.... Box said it would replace an Insinkerator but you have to take all old hardware out. At least that is what the instructions say. If you have specialized (ie. oiled brass) drain hardware, there are no instructions on how to keep that stuff. On the whole it is a better product for less money than Insinkerator. Life time warrantee, quieter, better grinding with a fewer stage grinding technology, doesn't have to be re-wired to install. I wish I could have gotten it easily installed. Instructions would have helped but all instructions wanted me to do is replace the drain tail piece with their ugly cheap looking chrome stuff. Buy it if you want to replace the whole sink drain. Pass if you want to keep any of your current hardware and do a twist and go Insinkerator installation. October 18, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great machine, excellent warranty service My model 9980 worked really well. It is a powerful unit and is reasonably quiet. It broke after 8 years, and I called Anaheim Manufacturing about the lifetime warranty. Nick was in the U.S., asked a few questions, then undertook to replace the unit. This is definitely the product to purchase. October 5, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Garbage Disposal Unit went it easily. The discharge line was a little different than the old unit and it has a proprietary gasket or seal where the line meets the output of the garbage disposal so the old fitting would not work but they included a piece of ABS pipe that I was able to cut to fit and the rest just dropped right into place. Seems like a good model and runs fairly quietly. I'm happy with it so far. August 31, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great value for a great product I was torn between the Insinkerator and the Waste King. I loved the quietness of the Insinkerator, and the small size, but the price was outrageous, with only a limited warranty. The Waste King is the only 1-HP disposal with a lifetime warranty, and it's an in-home warranty. I had a plumber install it. He was impressed with the unit and said it was pretty quiet for a 1-HP. It is no louder than a small .5-hp. The unit is big though. It was fortunate I had a plumber install it. The online price for the Waste King 1-HP was a great deal; cheaper than many 1/2 HP disposals. This definitely was a great value for a great product. February 17, 2015
