Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be used on an exterior door? If not, is there a version that can be used?

Asked by: Cataplasm
This is not an exterior finish. If used on raw wood, it will provide color for the wood but is not weather resistant. If needed or wanted for color you must top coat with poly for weather protection.

I was told by a wood refinisher to use watco danish oil with a clean wipe to lightly freshen up my wooden dining room table.

Is this true?
Asked by: Rick
This might work depending on what finish is already on the table. Bear in mind this is a finish not Lemon oil or Pledge and as such must cure properly. If there is a sealed finish already on the table this product will not penetrate it.

I recently made a box of red oak and finished it with Watco Natural Danish Oil. It is really easy to use and looks great. It really makes the wood pop. I let it dry for about a week. The instructions say it "only" needs 3 days to dry but I think that you really need at least 5 days. I wiped on the first coat and let it sit for about an hour and then wiped on a second coat on top of the first. After a full 7 days I gave it a light sanding and then topped it with a gloss lacquer. I used a fine sanding sponge just to smooth the surface before applying the lacquer and it turned out great. I sprayed on two cats of lacquer and then lightly smoothed with the sponge again and then sprayed on a light coat of lacquer. The danish oil really makes the wood look fantastic and the lacquer top coat is really an easy way to get a terrific finished look.

Softwoods sometimes look "patchy" if not prepared properly but hardwoods seem to love the oil. The pint I purchased is being used for wooden handles on gardening tools. The handles can last for decades if oiled several times a season.

The woods were dark cedar, birch, and Radiata pine. They all looked super after the oil. Definitely follow the directions about wiping off wet spots, or it will be sticky.

They had been stored outside in the weather for years. After cleaning them up, I applied 3 applications of this oil. Results are amazing. See photos for before and after. A great product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pre-treated pine I bought the natural oil finish to do a first coat before using the dark walnut finish. I had done a previous pine project and it stained a bit blotchy. This natural coat helped.
