Customer Questions & Answers

why is the finish sticky?

Asked by: granny
It may have softened the finish if left on longer than the recommended 10 minutes ?? when you are then supposed to wipe it off. I wiped the pieces I used it on very good with a clean soft cloth and then wiped them again. Neither of my pieces (cedar chest and cherry dresser) were sticky. I did use a tarp under each piece and left them on it for several days to be sure the legs were dried (not oily, if I missed a spot).

Surfaces will deteriorate and show age after some years but this Watco Rejuvenating Oil product brings it back to life. I have found that stains can still show a presence after cleaning and removing most of it but this product blends in the old with the new to give an even shine and look. The only drawback I can see is when the product is kept on the shelf be sure to mix it up before use. I've been using it for 3 years on many different types of finishes and textures and I'm on my 3rd or 4th can.

There is so much distressed woodwork in our house that refinishing would be a life's work, but I can't bear to paint it! So far, though, the Rejuvenating Oil has done a great job of making it glow without destroying the character. Bare spots and deep scratches will need more attention, but this stuff revives 90% of the surfaces I've tried it on, while "merely" helping the other 10%. Just as importantly, it has done no harm at all! No caking up in corners, or trapping dust, so I'm very pleased. I'll definitely pick up more, and likely other Watco products for testing on surfaces that need more help. Remember that this is an intermediate fix between polishing and refinishing, so keep your expectations realistic - the product does what it claims. The smell lingers for several days, but it's not unpleasant, and you can definitely continue using the space, even with limited ventilation.

Bought this to see what it would do to the top of my Mother's cedar chest which had several large, deep scratches on the lid. It cleaned the top and covered the scratches which surprised me, it actually looks very good now. It is easy to use, wear gloves. It was not for use inside of the cedar chest, I used Oil of Cedar, also from HD for this which completely brought the cedar smell back (after sanding which did not renew the cedar smell). Then I used it on a cherry dresser that was my Grandmother's. It has several water spots on the top which this did not cover nor did it clean the top of what looks like finger prints . This is not a furniture refinisher which I knew but hoped it would work as well on the dresser as it had on the chest. It did shine it up as it was fairly dull from many years of use, It's at least 70 years old. I would use it on other old furniture just to give it some life but not expect it to look unblemished.

Easy application - applied it directly to doors / door jams, and really brought them back to life. Glad I went this route (using rejuvenating oil and new door handles) versus replacing 9 doors in the house!

If your piece is quite dry it may take several coats to replenish the internal oils. Make sure you let it dry thoroughly before putting piece back into use.
