Answer:
I worked in the sheet metal union in Cleveland Ohio and installed a lot of duct work and used a product simmilar to this very often. If we used this in a visible area and one of the apprentices done a sloppy job we put 2" Aluminum Foil Tape over the section to make it look presentable.

Answer:
I'm not sure what you used, Mastic seals are normal off white. If this is a tar based seal, use a window scraper that uses razor blades and mineral spirts.

Answer:
If the duct work is inside the conditioned area don't seal it or insulate it. This stuff is great for hidden areas. Attic, walls, and basements. You should have used the connecting products recommended by the duct manufacturer. Clean this off and do it right man.

Answer:
The preparation comes before, what I normally do is use masking tape to outline the area I will be covering. Once it's dry I pull the tape off to give it a clean look. Based on your pictures I can only suggest a razor blade or you can tape and apply a light coat.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 45 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best at what it does! For nearly a hundred year old home with some pretty old duct work, we were heating and cooling our basement as opposed to the rest of the home. Duct tapes didn't hold up well and new air leaks would form sooner than expected. The mastic did a great job at durably holding up and sealing. Since it was an unfinished basement space, we weren't so concerned with the, shall we say, less than aesthetically pleasing final look. January 14, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good mastic 25 plus years hvac. Used all kinds of mastics and bought this because I was in a pinch on a weekend and this product is the same as the UL listed mastic January 23, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not HVAC grade I bought a bucket of this stuff in a pinch on the weekend to seal ductboard as part of a coil changeout job. While I can say that it works, it is nowhere near what I expect from an HVAC mastic. It is not fiber reinforced. It doesn't coat as well as real duct mastic. It shrinks and thins a lot when it dries and turns an ugly tan color instead of staying white. It is time consuming to get a "nickel thick" application. I'm comparing it against my experiences with Carlisle CCWI-181. I'm going to have to go back in a few days and go over all of the joints with Carlisle mastic in order to finish the job right. I don't know why HD cannot stock UL-listed HVAC stuff like this. It's not like it cost me any more at the supply house (actually cheaper oz-for-oz). November 19, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good stuff Does the job. Sealed up air leaks in my ductwork flanges effectively January 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product I used this product for a DIY project. The product bonds well with materials and easy to clean. Similar products cost twice as much. Great deal! November 3, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This mastic works well I am using this mastic to get all the duct work and plenum sealed prior to blowing insulation into my attic. This mastic product works well to seal HVAC duct work and the plenum. I planned on just sealing a couple seams on the plenum but after checking some of the flex duct connections, I decided to seal every connection from the plenum collar to the vent runs. (Check YouTube videos on "how to seal flex duct ") This will definitely stop the system from sucking dust out of the attic and blowing into my house and will increase overall HVAC efficiency. This mastic works very well, applied with a 1" brush. Wear rubber gloves, gets messy. Water clean up. November 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Big Money Saver I have discovered that one of the worst reasons for high energy use in your home can be leaking ductwork, both supply and return ducts. This mastic when easily applied by brush is very effective in eliminating the problem. Some air leaks may require the use of drywall mesh when applying this product. The mesh is also availoable at Home Depot .Inspection and repair of ductwork can save you many dollars off your power bill. Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Okay This Mastic is to watery. I have used RCD mastic in the past and that is much thicker and goes on quicker. October 6, 2015
