Customer Questions & Answers

Does this grass seed spread like vermuda grass ?

Asked by: willie
I've been told by turf grass scientist that it does not spread to the extent of Bermuda but it does create a bushier plant & will fill in small bare spot to a limited extent. Check the label. The RTF variety is probably less than 5% of the total seed.

What grass seed should I use that does not require a lot of watering?

I recently bought a new home out in the country and now have well water. I was told that I should not water my grass as often as I did because it will use up the well. Just wondering what type of seed should I put down as to not water as much.

Centipede grass does not require a great deal of watering. It is best established by sod (which will require a good bit of watering to get started) and will require minimum water once established. It can be started from seed but, due to it's slow growth habit, you won't see much grass until the second growing season.

Will this grow in sandy dirt? In Eastern NY?

Asked by: sarah
Sorry, I don't know. I live in So Cal. Maybe if you add soil amendment. You can buy a smaller size like 8-10 LBS. and test it out. Good Luck!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from QUICK GROWING SEEDS This is my third purchase of the grass seeds this year. The seeds grew within 3 weeks and was ready to cut 30-45 days. By reseeding my lawn with this seed it has almost eliminated weeds from taking over the yard. The front yard has lush green grass without the pesticides. I plan to reseed the rest of the yard to eliminated open spots and weeds. No more soil erosion after heavy rains.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great!!!!! I live in Southern Indiana. This is the seed that is used to grow sod where we live . This seed is the best I have ever used. The sod company sells this same seed to there customers for over $70 a 25lbs bag. If you want a beautiful lawn and thick grass this is the product for you. The cost is a little more but worth every penny!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Turned Scortched Earth Into A Beautiful Lawn Let me start with the end result first - I have grass where none had been found!!! This seed has been nothing short of exceptional. My lawn prior to use was an absolutely dreadful sight. It was diseased, in poor condition, and nothing would ever grow! Then I found this product! I live in Southern California, so I wanted something that would be drought resistant. I knew it would take a lot of water to get a lawn started, but after it took hold would only need watering once a week. So far, I am very impressed with the seeding. It has been about 8 weeks since the initial seeding and I have grass. Thick, lush, tall, super green and flourishing grass -- and it is in the winter as I write this! To seed the lawn, I researched quite a bit of tutorials online and asked a lot of people at Home Depot how to do it since I have two black thumbs. I did everything they said but roto-till the soil. I went to task with first wire-raking up all the dead grass and soil. Then I went to town on the lawn with a hard metal rake. This got up the rest of the dead grass and loosened up the top inch of soil for seeding. I went ahead and used a seed spreader and covered one half of the lawn generously. I then used top soil to about a quarter inch in most places (up to a half inch in other places) and covered the lawn. Then I did another layer of seeds (loosely raked in) and topped that with a hand tossing of manure. Then I watered....and waited. Keep in mind, the initial process took place in upper 70 degree weather. I watered every day for 14 days in the morning. After day 14, I watered every other day until day 28. Then after day 28, I watered every third day. On day 60, I started watering once a week. The results for the first batch of grass were... Day 1-6: Nothing but mud. Day 6-8: Little bits of green started to pop up. Day 9: First blades of grass started to spring up. Day 12: I had an actual green hue to the dirt. It looked like soft fuzz. I was loving it. Day 21: I had a thick lawn with some spots of bare seeding. So I rake and re-seeded. Day 42: I mowed the lawn for the first time and it was thick and full. The lawn developed a little bit of clover, but I think that was from my previous and otherwise dead mess I had before. It was not from the seed. The reason why I make note of the days and the temperatures is because in the second batch I did for the rest of the lawn, was about two weeks later when the temperatures started to be about 10+ degrees cooler. Everything held true as above, but for the fact that each date was delayed by a good 5-7 days. As for coverage, I bought the 25lb bag thinking it may not be enough to cover multiple sections of lawn -- roughly speaking 15ft x 20ft, 30ft x 20ft, 5ft x 30ft and 4ft x 20ft. . Not only did it cover it all, but I still had about 5lbs left! I will be down right honest and upfront here, I never thought anything would grown on that soil. That was actually why I chose to use seed over turf. I did not want to pay 5-6 times the price for what would be another dead lawn. Boy was I wrong. This stuff not only works, but it is the first green lawn i have had in years. As an aside, the expression of watching grass grow was not as boring as it sounds. I caught myself looking out the window multiple times a day admiring the grass as it grew. Funny, but true.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy in MT After many years trying to establish some lawn around our home in MT, I found the water saver seed from Home Depot. We live 90 miles from the nearest HD store so I was pleased to order online and get free shipping. I prepared the soil by hand (not a professional job) scattered the seed, gently raked it in, and tamped it down. I applied seed in the early spring, early summer and early fall in different places around the house. The grass is growing well. Even the most recent early fall spots are beginning to sprout. Our winters are not too severe so I anticipate a good start for those areas next spring. Only problem are the wild turkeys are eating the grass seed. Non the less, I am very happy with this product and will order more when needed.
