Customer Questions & Answers

does the water boss 900 have a bypass valve so I can water flower and vegetable plants

Asked by: porg
Yes. There is a knob on top of the valve. There is an arrow on top of this knob. If the arrow on the knob is turned so that it is pointing at the word 'service' this means that water is flowing through the water softener. If the arrow is pointing at the word 'bypass', water simply does a U-turn inside of the valve and does NOT pass through the Waterboss. A few people suggested flushing the water through the water lines as it will already be softened. This is true. However, the volume of water stored inside of your internal plumbing is very small and would only take a few minutes to flush. In other words, this is not a problem.

How many pounds of salt can it hold?

Asked by: cnd
I don't go by pounds of salt, however, if the bag is 40 lbs, there are times that I put in one bag of salt, and another time I add another one-half bag; however, I never let the salt table get above the main rim of the tub (the black bowl and where the salt will be next to it). For the most part in the last few years I have added only one bag. To gage the one bag, I check my salt level and measure the height to the just below the rim I mentioned above. If the water level and remaining salt in the container can adequately hold the extra salt - then I put it in; however, there are times when I have only put in 35 lbs (give or take). You will develop your own style that best fits you as to how you are going to add salt to the Waterboss.

SALT GETS STUCK WONT GO DOWN TO BOTTOM

Asked by: TOM
Not sure what you mean by "Salt gets stuck" but something that you have to do with water softeners is to break the salt crust that happens from time to time. I have a large stick that I use to break up the salt crust and I know I have broken through it when water (at least 2-4 inches) are on the tip of my stick. I do this once every 10-14 days.

We purchased this softener because our old one was the same brand and had given us 15 years of good service. Our new softener was delivered direct to our house and was inoperable. The top of the cabinet would not stay attached, there was a crack under the motor and some of the interior plumbing was disconnected. Home Depot accepted the return of the damaged unit and ordered a replacement. The new one arrived quickly in perfect condition and I had it installed in no time. We use the Water Boss because we are on a septic system and it uses much less water to recharge.

This is the second one I have purchased and do to the high concentration of minerals in our water (Arizona, where else), this Waterboss 9000 does not last very long, as parts wear out to quickly. After replacing two items (one twice), I decided it would be cheaper to purchase another one.

I have... ***Warning*** I have owned this unit--purchased from Home Depot--for just over two years. I have had no less than four system failures during that time and countless minor issues. The company stands behind their product--I will give them that--they have always shipped out replacement parts without delay. However, I have spent too many hours of my own labor to repair the unit. There is simply too high of a failure rate--I have never had more than a few months pass without having to deal with some problem. I am finally having to replace the unit after just two years--the hassle and time is no longer worth it. The company touts their superior design and Made-in-America pedigree--my previous water softener was a generic Made-in-China GE unit. I suspect that the customer service on that product would not have been as responsive--but guess what--I never had to call them in 6 years because the thing never broke--it just worked. Be careful before you purchase a Water Boss.

Was on the way to purchase the GE water softener, when an employee at Home Depot showed me the Water Boss. Him and his manager were pretty adamant about this being better. They said they do get some GE models returned, but never the Water Boss. Installation was fairly easy, but we did have to cut some pipe. Our house was already plumbed with an old softener, and I couldn't imagine doing any plumbing installation myself if I had to. We basically took out the old one, and put this one in with a little work. The IN and OUT valves were backwards, so we had to "puzzle" fit the softener, which was fairly easy besides getting some measurements. We hooked up the old drain line to this one, which goes through the attic back into the washer tub. It goes beyond the recommended 8 feet, but haven't had issues yet. After 20 minutes of installing, regenerating and adding salt, the water levels were totally clean! We had some hard water before we started using this, and now its the cleanest setting in the test. The biggest reason we picked it was because of the iron filter, and how its lifetime. Also, the home depot employees said it uses less water than others, and obviously the size. Make sure and read the instructions carefully! We had to go purchase CPVC pipe because we didn't pay attention the first time. Other than a few trips back and forth to home depot (we did self installation), the experience was overall easy!
