Questions & Answers

does the water boss 900 have a bypass valve so I can water flower and vegetable plants

Asked by: porg
Yes. There is a knob on top of the valve. There is an arrow on top of this knob. If the arrow on the knob is turned so that it is pointing at the word 'service' this means that water is flowing through the water softener. If the arrow is pointing at the word 'bypass', water simply does a U-turn inside of the valve and does NOT pass through the Waterboss. A few people suggested flushing the water through the water lines as it will already be softened. This is true. However, the volume of water stored inside of your internal plumbing is very small and would only take a few minutes to flush. In other words, this is not a problem.

How many pounds of salt can it hold?

Asked by: cnd
I don't go by pounds of salt, however, if the bag is 40 lbs, there are times that I put in one bag of salt, and another time I add another one-half bag; however, I never let the salt table get above the main rim of the tub (the black bowl and where the salt will be next to it). For the most part in the last few years I have added only one bag. To gage the one bag, I check my salt level and measure the height to the just below the rim I mentioned above. If the water level and remaining salt in the container can adequately hold the extra salt - then I put it in; however, there are times when I have only put in 35 lbs (give or take). You will develop your own style that best fits you as to how you are going to add salt to the Waterboss.

I would like to use sprinkler pipe and pvc cement on my installation , would this be ok and
Asked by: bill
Bill, since I have no clue to how you want to use the sprinkler pipe and cement on your installation, as I assume it is a WaterBoss 900. I would suggest you let someone who is familiar with the system guide you on this process, or if you take the time to call the toll-free number for the company that is in your set up pamphlet, they could tell you more. With the information I have and my own personal experience there is a hose (rubber) that is attached from the WB, but it is not sprinkler pipe...

I actively used this product for about 3 years during which I had to call and order replacement parts 3 times. Overall good product and experience. The one downside was that the Home Depot plumber that did the installation placed this unit outside telling me, "Most people want their unit outside. There have been no problems." Later the Water Boss people adamantly refuted his statement about the unit being for outside. That was very disconcerting, but it had more to do with HD than with WB.

This is the best softener for small locations (meaning where it is installed). The water tested after the installation was perfect. The only short term issue was an odor and taste largely due to the new piping and the softener unit itself. This will dissipate over time. The only gotcha for me was that I learned the unit I installed was manufactured 3 years ago! I'm hoping the technology hasn't changed much as I have a product that is already 3 years old installed. I've already paid the plumber, so I'm not changing it out. The good news is that the warranty goes from the installation, not the date is was built. I would definitely buy it again even with the gotcha. Good product and value.

The first lasted 17 years with 1 control replacement and 2 brass valve assembly replacements in that time period. The cost is about one-third of many softener systems. It's expected that the homeowner will install, and my husband did so in 2000. He also installed the replacement parts. The new softener was installed by a professional who sells softener systems made by Waterboss' parent company (whose name begins with a P but I can't find it). If you can handle softener installations, I recommend a Waterboss. After reviewing various comments by other buyers, it sounds like I've been one of the lucky ones. Hopefully, this new Waterboss won't give me any problems, either.

The water boss was easy to install and set up. I did have to purchase some additional plumbing fittings to adapt the new Water Boss to the hoses that I had older Water Boss hooked up with (that one lasted about 15 years) . After a couple of days the water quality is noticeably better and more consistent. Our water comes from a "shallow" well and is moderately, to very hard, and has some iron to boot, a real challenge for a water softener.

We purchased this softener because our old one was the same brand and had given us 15 years of good service. Our new softener was delivered direct to our house and was inoperable. The top of the cabinet would not stay attached, there was a crack under the motor and some of the interior plumbing was disconnected. Home Depot accepted the return of the damaged unit and ordered a replacement. The new one arrived quickly in perfect condition and I had it installed in no time. We use the Water Boss because we are on a septic system and it uses much less water to recharge.

It's slightly updated, but the basics are still the same. We have super hard water, and only after 13 years did this softener fail. It provided wonderfully soft water all that time, and the new one is working just as well. The time from when the old one had to be taken out of service until the time that we were able to put the new one in service was horrible! I forgot how truly hard and damaging our well water is. I would definitely recommend this softener to anyone with hard well water. The compact size is a plus, too. We live in a double-wide, with limited space, and it fits quite conveniently in the linen closet, only losing the floor space (but leaving enough floor to store 2 bags of salt with it), and one low shelf. The compact size paired with the softening efficiency makes this a 5-Star product.
