Customer Questions & Answers

does the water boss 900 have a bypass valve so I can water flower and vegetable plants

Asked by: porg
Yes. There is a knob on top of the valve. There is an arrow on top of this knob. If the arrow on the knob is turned so that it is pointing at the word 'service' this means that water is flowing through the water softener. If the arrow is pointing at the word 'bypass', water simply does a U-turn inside of the valve and does NOT pass through the Waterboss. A few people suggested flushing the water through the water lines as it will already be softened. This is true. However, the volume of water stored inside of your internal plumbing is very small and would only take a few minutes to flush. In other words, this is not a problem.

How many pounds of salt can it hold?

Asked by: cnd
I don't go by pounds of salt, however, if the bag is 40 lbs, there are times that I put in one bag of salt, and another time I add another one-half bag; however, I never let the salt table get above the main rim of the tub (the black bowl and where the salt will be next to it). For the most part in the last few years I have added only one bag. To gage the one bag, I check my salt level and measure the height to the just below the rim I mentioned above. If the water level and remaining salt in the container can adequately hold the extra salt - then I put it in; however, there are times when I have only put in 35 lbs (give or take). You will develop your own style that best fits you as to how you are going to add salt to the Waterboss.

SALT GETS STUCK WONT GO DOWN TO BOTTOM

Asked by: TOM
Not sure what you mean by "Salt gets stuck" but something that you have to do with water softeners is to break the salt crust that happens from time to time. I have a large stick that I use to break up the salt crust and I know I have broken through it when water (at least 2-4 inches) are on the tip of my stick. I do this once every 10-14 days.

We purchased this softener because our old one was the same brand and had given us 15 years of good service. Our new softener was delivered direct to our house and was inoperable. The top of the cabinet would not stay attached, there was a crack under the motor and some of the interior plumbing was disconnected. Home Depot accepted the return of the damaged unit and ordered a replacement. The new one arrived quickly in perfect condition and I had it installed in no time. We use the Water Boss because we are on a septic system and it uses much less water to recharge.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hope it has not fallen over in route to you!! This is my second water boss water softener. Installation went smoothly but once in service we got a gritty sand type material in our water lines. This was so bad that it clogged our faucet strainers. After calling the tech support number we were advised that if the unit had tipped over on its side before installation the media inside would have spilled out. Other than a this side up on the box statement there was no other warning. This could have tipped over anywhere in transit from the factory to Home Depot. Took a number of backwashes to clear all our water lines. Very poor design!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Leaked right after install and Waterboss will not cover the repair. The only reason I use this brand is because of the space constraints I have in my garage. This is my 4th Waterboss purchased in 15 years. This particular unit leaked within 24 hours of being installed. I called Waterboss and was told it had a defective end cap gasket. They would send me the part, and I should repair it myself. That’s it! No warranty repair. I said “you sold me a defective product and want me to repair it myself, or pay to have someone you recommend do the repair”. She confirmed this was the case. I will be bringing this one back to Home Depot and letting Waterboss have it back. If you have room for a traditional water softener you should skip the Waterboss.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from JUNK! Bought this 2 years ago and it has been nothing but grief since. Gone through 3 control panels,it plugged up and cabinet filled up with water. Home Depot wouldn't help, Delta Mechanical, who installed it said it wasn't their problem, Waterboss had no idea they even made the thing. Had to find an outside plumber to fix it @ $127. Thanks to everybody. Switching to Lowe's.

The only real thing I didn't like was the fact that the water intake and output were 1'' and I couldn't use a Sharkbite connector to hook up to my existing pipes. I had to get creative with some PVC and tapered it to 3/4 and then do the Sharkbite, you can see what I mean in the attached pics. The Waterboss was installed in front and to the left of the Water Heater. Another thing I was surprised about (after my purchase of course) were all the negative reviews on Amazon about this product. Everything I saw on the HD site was pretty positive. The difference in the water taste and hardness is nothing short of REMARKABLE so it really does a GREAT JOB there. Unless there is some sort of long term issue that will come up later, so far I am happy. If it turns out to be low/no maintenance over the long haul then this was a FANTASTIC find......Here's hoping for longevity!!
