Answer:
Yes.
There is a knob on top of the valve. There is an arrow on top of this knob. If the arrow on the knob is turned so that it is pointing at the word 'service' this means that water is flowing through the water softener. If the arrow is pointing at the word 'bypass', water simply does a U-turn inside of the valve and does NOT pass through the Waterboss.

A few people suggested flushing the water through the water lines as it will already be softened. This is true. However, the volume of water stored inside of your internal plumbing is very small and would only take a few minutes to flush. In other words, this is not a problem. Read Less

However, as another person mentioned, all the lines downstream of the unit will still be full of treated water. It would be wasteful and time-consuming to flush the treated water down the drain before watering your plants with untreated water. Instead, you should have a tee connection before the unit to have access to untreated water for plant irrigation purposes.
Also, the treated water doesn't taste as good as untreated well water. It is very slightly salty (this is what makes it bad for plants). If you have the money and expertise, it is better to run a dedicated untreated line to your refrigerator ice maker and kitchen sink Read Less

Answer:
Yes it does, but the water in the lines will still have treated water. I personally installed a separate water line with a valve before the inlet line to the machine, so I could water plants as needed.

Answer:
The Waterboss is a self contained system with three connections required:
1) the Water inlet from the main supply.
2) the Water outlet back into the home system
3) is discharge tube which is vented to drain when the unit cycle flushes.
Ther is no separate resevour for the salt just the one unit.

Answer:
Another person answered this question correctly. There is a lid on top of the unit that slides back. This exposes an open area inside the unit between the tank and the shell containing the tank. Pour the salt in this area. The salt sits outside of the tank but inside of the water softener cabinet.

Answer:
It's a self-contained system. The salt goes in the main unit. However, it still needs to be plumbed to:
1. Untreated water in
2. Treated water out
3. Regeneration waste water to drain
4. Overflow to drain

The info sheet claims about 105 pounds. But if filled with water and salt it could be as high as 190 pounds.
Most floors will support this weight.

Customer Reviews

36,400-Grain Water Softener System is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 115.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible purchase In the two years I've owned this softener, it has worked for 6 months. The first time I contacted customer service, and they took me through a series of tedious and very time consuming tasks that included emptying the entire tank and taking the thing apart. One of the cleaning steps must have worked, and it started to work again. But then it stopped working again. I went through the same series of tedious and time consuming tasks to try to get it working again and it didn't work this time. Customer service was no help after many back and forth emails that took some time to get responses, and of course it isn't under warranty anymore. I've finally decided that I've sunk too much time into this thing and NEED soft water, so I'm investing more money for something better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from after 4 months of use Waterboss. is working flawless Hesitated buying this unit because of some negative reviews. I purchased the waterboss because of its compact size, instalation manual was straight forward, directions on programing display head were simple enough. My water tested 26gr hard, set program for that hardness and left the rest on the settings on the factory defaults and the softener does the rest. Only used two forty lb.bags to fill and this will last almost two months for our house hold of 2 people. So far very pleased with the product and would recommend it as a good purchase. Reasonably priced and installing was not that difficult.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hope it has not fallen over in route to you!! This is my second water boss water softener. Installation went smoothly but once in service we got a gritty sand type material in our water lines. This was so bad that it clogged our faucet strainers. After calling the tech support number we were advised that if the unit had tipped over on its side before installation the media inside would have spilled out. Other than a this side up on the box statement there was no other warning. This could have tipped over anywhere in transit from the factory to Home Depot. Took a number of backwashes to clear all our water lines. Very poor design!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Leaked right after install and Waterboss will not cover the repair. The only reason I use this brand is because of the space constraints I have in my garage. This is my 4th Waterboss purchased in 15 years. This particular unit leaked within 24 hours of being installed. I called Waterboss and was told it had a defective end cap gasket. They would send me the part, and I should repair it myself. That’s it! No warranty repair. I said “you sold me a defective product and want me to repair it myself, or pay to have someone you recommend do the repair”. She confirmed this was the case. I will be bringing this one back to Home Depot and letting Waterboss have it back. If you have room for a traditional water softener you should skip the Waterboss.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We purchased this softener because our old one was the same brand and had given us 15 years of go... We purchased this softener because our old one was the same brand and had given us 15 years of good service. Our new softener was delivered direct to our house and was inoperable. The top of the cabinet would not stay attached, there was a crack under the motor and some of the interior plumbing was disconnected. Home Depot accepted the return of the damaged unit and ordered a replacement. The new one arrived quickly in perfect condition and I had it installed in no time. We use the Water Boss because we are on a septic system and it uses much less water to recharge.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product! Love the size. A piece of the plastic inside cracked after the salt was put in, but doesn't affect how it operates. Just wish it could be made with something other than plastic...the piece that connects one side to the other is too weak if it breaks when salt is added. We have very hard well water and it definitely softens it up. We bought the larger one due to the hardness of our water...75. We have since turned it down as the water was a bit too soft, couldn't get the soap out! I think we could have gotten by with the smaller version.
