Unless you know it is ferrous iron only, I would put it before the softener (page 6 in the manual) the other two types of iron will eventually foul and plug the softener resin bed and use more salt. I have a very bad problem, probably all three types. I have been reading about this stuff until my eyes are about to bleed. I am going to have a local lab tell me EXACTLY what I have, then put in the proper equipment the first time, and will probably get it at HD. I figure by DIY I will be money ahead by doing this. There are symptoms and indicators to go by such as color of water, stains etc but i want to be sure. Read Less

I'd recommend installing it before your water softener. Functionally, it will work either way. However, if you install your iron filter BEFORE you water softener your water softener will operate more efficiently in terms of water and salt usage. Why? I found the manual to be confusing and not helpful. What maintenance procedures require running water to a drain or to the outdoors via a hose? Thank you for your help.

yes a drain is needed for the backwash during regeneration. A hose is included, and the drain hose can be installed overhead to the drain if needed.

Iron Reduction Filter is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 77.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good for one year. This unit was installed for iron and lasted just over 3 years and needed 2 repairs before i just threw it out. Manufacter sent a part to fix it once and i fixed it another time but now just slightly out of warranty they will not supply a part. They do not stand behind their product. It worked ok for the first year and was pretty much useless after that. I supplied a picture of the inlet and outlet of the iron filter after 3 years of use. As you can tell both sides are rusty so this proves this filter was not doing anything for quite some time. I would also like to add my basement flooded twice from this filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No more orange! Just installed the 900IF. A glass of water left on the counter would turn orange very quickly, and sinks and toilets had orange stains that could only be removed with pumice or Iron Out. Now my water stays clear and the stains are gone! I installed the filter myself (easy using PEX) and it's working great. Would recommend this product to anyone fighting the orange!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as Advertised This product works. We had severe sulfur stench and now it's gone! Have had it in only a week but the results were immediate (24hrs or less). My Iron is very high and using the calculation sheet as far as I can tell the machine actually needs to recharge about every 0.6 days. I will be interested in seeing how much Pot Perm I go through and am beginning to wonder where the break even point is for this affordable unit vs. the high cost units from other places. But to the point this product does what it says it will do. For the cost it works excellent.

This product worked for one regeneration cycle and has not worked properly since. Made a call to their technical department and spoke with someone who really did not want to be bothered. The Waterboss filter and the Technical department phone number are now both in the local landfill where they belong. Save your time and money, purchase a real working filtration system from a reputable company !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Waterboss Iron Reduction Filter is great! 2 months ago we installed a Waterboss Iron Reduction Filter, our well water had a rotten egg smell and stained everything gold color for 38 years. The filter works great! Immediately we had clear fresh water. We tested it and it is perfect in all categories! We no longer buy bottle water to drink and have cleaned all dishes and appliances and they are staying white now and our clothes! Best $400 we ever spent! Darrell in NC

Well the local store needs to have them in stock on the shelf, not having to wait for the product to be shipped, 10 days later and then to have the it arrive damage by shipper and wait another 10 days for the new one to come in is not acceptable. As for the iron filter I will have to try it longer then a few days to see how well it work. As for install, I placed it inline with a new water filter, new Iron filter, new water softener and hot water heater, along with all new water piping through out house to get rid of old galvanize piping that was corroding, also replace all corroding faucets, Hoping this iron filter will remove the rotten egg smell, will not know how that works for a little time. All units were easy to install. Hope this helps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great Thus Far! Ive had the unit a few weeks now. Had awful smell thought was in pipes. Iron levels tested were very low. No smell from water hoses. Nonetheless after installation. Immediately 100% gone. Water feels softer too as the downstream softener probably works better. Very happy with product. The permanganete is messy but worth trouble for amazing water. When first installed had purple water out faucets from factory testing and or me setting up wrong. As said instructions were joke but phone support was quick and helpful. I don't normally write reviews but this unit impressed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from After watching the installation video we chose to return the filter before we even installed it. ... After watching the installation video we chose to return the filter before we even installed it. It said the incoming water had to be 40 degrees or warmer and that is not possible to control, especially since we are on a well. We were disappointed because it was advertised to use on home wells.
