Unless you know it is ferrous iron only, I would put it before the softener (page 6 in the manual) the other two types of iron will eventually foul and plug the softener resin bed and use more salt. I have a very bad problem, probably all three types. I have been reading about this stuff until my eyes are about to bleed. I have a very bad problem, probably all three types. I have been reading about this stuff until my eyes are about to bleed. I am going to have a local lab tell me EXACTLY what I have, then put in the proper equipment the first time, and will probably get it at HD. I figure by DIY I will be money ahead by doing this. There are symptoms and indicators to go by such as color of water, stains etc but i want to be sure. Read Less

I'd recommend installing it before your water softener. Functionally, it will work either way. However, if you install your iron filter BEFORE you water softener your water softener will operate more efficiently in terms of water and salt usage. Why? Answer:
You have to put 1-1/2 bottles in every 3 months to maintain the unit. They are expensive at $39/each but the system will not work without it and having no smell and no mineral deposits is well worth it.

I found the manual to be confusing and not helpful. What maintenance procedures require running water to a drain or to the outdoors via a hose? Thank you for your help.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 68 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad purchase Arrive damaged. Home Despot cannot get the manufacturer to send a replacement part. Been almost a month just sitting on the floor, cannot use it. February 23, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good value The filter was fairly easy to install, but the instructions left something to be desired. The included DVD only applied to the water softener model (not the iron filter), so it was pretty useless. It is too early to tell if it is taking care of the iron problem. We were replacing a much more expensive model, so if it works it will be a great value compared to others we've priced. May 31, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Does not do as advertised The unit was easy to install. There was absolutely no change in amount of iron after installing. Water boss advised many things to change to see if it would make a difference it has not to date. Giving it another 6 days to confirm results before returning product May 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works well Easy to install and start-up. Works well and has not required any maintenance. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Dang Works really good coupled with my water Boss Water softner. Definitely tell the difference in quality of water. Easy to set up. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by SOLVED OUR PROBLEMS! Had water/iron problems for years. Tried everything and nothing worked. The waterboss 900IF ended all our problems. I am not a handyman but, the installation was easy and we could not be more pleased. No more iron rings in tubs, toilets, and sinks. May 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great buy It's a great product, does the job perfectly as it said. Good value for the money. Customer service for the product not Homedepot needs to lose the attitude, other wise it's 100% buy May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great! Had iron at 12 ppm and had a quote of over $7000 to get it fixed. We decided to try the Waterboss instead. Had it installed about 1 month ago and just had our water tested we now have iron at 1ppm and along with our softener have great water. We can drink it, wash clothes, whatever. Seems to be working just great February 23, 2016
