My icemaker calls for a 1/4" nonself piercing saddle valve. I am to drill a 1/4" hole into the water line and position the saddle valve over the hole

My icemaker calls for a 1/4" nonself piercing saddle valve. I am to drill a 1/4" hole into the water line and position the saddle valve over the hole. Is the copper tubing 1/4" inside diameter or outside diameter? the manual calls for a 1/4" opening. To get a 1/4" opening do I need to buy a 3/8 or 5/16 diameter copper tubing? The icemaker kits for sale say 1/4". I specifically need a 1/4" opening and line.
Asked by: Bear
DON'T DRILL! The saddle valve has a piercing tip that will make the necessary hole in the line.

Can I use this as a shut off valve?

I currently have this installed, and I need to replace my fridge. Do I turn the T handle clockwise to shut off water to the fridge?
Asked by: Erik
I have two saddle valves on this water line (one for my ice maker and another for my whole-house humidifier) for shutoffs.

Customer Reviews

1/4 in. x 15 ft. Copper Icemaker Installation Kit is rated 2.5 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Thank you for review information Thank you to all who reviewed that this was not a complete kit. I went to Home Depot knowing this from the reviews. The salesman said everything was in the kit and I didn't need anything else. I told him what I had read on the internet about the extra compression part not being included. He made a remark about things on the internet not being true and showed me what I was asking for but made me feel it wasn't necessary. . Got home and my husband took the kit apart and sure enough, no attachment for refrigerator. I would have been running back too. Hook up is easy and quick when you have all the parts. Extra part was a 1/4 inch Compression. ($3 part)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a Complete Kit for the Modern Frig. The kit has everything you need for the tap-in to the cold water line but, for the other end (frig connection), the kit does not come with the compression fitting needed to hook up the frig. Buy kit + compression fitting (nut and bevel) for a 1/4 inch copper line.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Would be nice if they actually put the parts in the package that are shown on line All of the fittings pictured on line as part of the kit were not included in the kit purchased. Not real happy right now. So we have to trek back to the store to exchange/return. We made a special trip to the store just for this item. Check the package before you leave the store to make sure all parts are there!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Compression fittings don't compress I bought this kit for the copper line. I skipped using the puncture valve, which is not a valve recommended by plumbers, and bought a separate T fitting for the water line end. That worked fine. The problem was at refrigerator end. The compression fittings that come with this kit don't compress onto the copper line no matter how tight they are tightened. I've worked on my own plumbing for 30 years. I've never run into a compression fitting that won't tighten onto a copper pipe. Maybe the fittings are made for plastic tubing, I don't know. Now I have to go back to the store to find compression fittings that work with copper tubing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Missing part? Since this kit only had nut and ferrule for one end (at valve), I had to make a trip back to Home Depot to get a ferrule for the refrigerator end of the tubing. BTW, I also purchased the refrigerator from Home Depot.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy, didn't come with needed parts This only came with one nut and ferrule. Who installs a pipe only on one side; did they think my fridge came with the other parts? Do not buy, go for the GE kit instead for another 20 cents.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product I'm not much of a Plumber and I was scared after buying a new Fridge that I would have to get a water source for the Ice Maker. All you do is put the T clamp on the cold water pipe then screw it in, A needle comes out and pop's a hole in the cold water pipe and BAM you don't have to torch any pipes make anything. And when your done you have a nice shut off valve. Anyone can set this up with little tools needed

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall this was a good product Easy to install. My only complaint was that a compression fitting was missing for one end of the kit. I had to go back to Home Depot a purchase it separately.
