Answer:
Probably a small pond, but should be elevated off bottom to minimize silt and debris as much as possible. Manual says its "not suitable for aquatic life".

Answer:
No, it should not be placed on clay, earth, or sand surfaces so unless the pond has a concrete bottom this pump is not compatible.

Answer:
I don't see why it would not. I just know if diesel fumes may ignite when the electric motor is switched on. If the diesel gets hot I think the vapor will ignite and explode. I would only try this with the power switch very far away.

Customer Reviews

1/4 HP Non-Clogging Vortex, Reinforced Thermoplastic Submersible Utility Pump is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 35.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Utility Pump Well built with no assembly needed other than screwing in the hose adapter. Manual is typical pages of warnings as to what NOT to do with it but little information regarding the oil inside or warnings to NOT unknowingly drain it, thinking its water that leaked in to slosh around after its first use. The drain/fill plug is a simple push in rubber stopper that is easy to remove and is not marked with warnings like everything else. Wayne customer support was very helpful in providing information and selling me a pint of replacement "dielectric oil" for me to correct my mistake. Overall its a great little portable pump that is ideal for quickly draining outdoor hot tubs!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from lasts only for 4 months of use It works well .. until it stops working ! I use this during the summer months from may through september . It would run daily between 10 and 5pm. The pump is submerged completely under water. Repeatedly with these types of pumps, it works for only a year at a time. At the end of its short life, it would literally short circuits.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not For Flat Roofs - Missing Spec in Product Overview I bought this pump to drain the water that continues to pool on my flat roof; however, what I didn't know until reading the instruction manual is that it has to be sitting in 2-5/8" water before it will prime and start pumping water. For a roof, that's a lot. And of course it doesn't mention this in the Product Overview. And when I did get it to start, it didn't pump down to 1/8" like it claims. This could be because roof asphalt is not a completely smooth surface. It may work fine on a concrete basement floor or hot tub, but for a roof...it's no good. Hopefully this review will prevent you from making the same mistake I made.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from must start in 2 5/8" of water I bought this after our basement flooded 3x in March. All the specs and outside of the box tout its ability to suck up water down to 1/4" deep. That is true. What is not clear, until you take it out the box, is that is has to start in water that is at least 2 5/8" deep! There is a sticker on the side stating the minimum water depth. Why not mention that on the box or product specs anywhere? Since I bought it to such up very shallow water I have not been able to test it other than a few seconds in a bucket to see if it works at all. I am going to see if I can construct a ring to place around it to get it primed when starting. If they had mentioned the fact that it needs deep water to get started I would have bought something else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value and easy to install. I found this pump an excellent value and easy to install for my application. Before purchasing this pump, my home in Florida had significant water damage from a tropical storm. In addition, I had drainage problems from runoff on the sidewalks and patios near the house. To help solve the drainage problem, I sunk a 5 gallon plastic pail into the ground at the low spot, put the pump in the pail, plugged it in to a switched outside outlet, and covered the top of the pail with screen and pond stones. Now, when it rains hard, I occasionally run the pump as necessary to drain the pail and keep water away from the house foundation. The pump drains the pail in less that a minute, and I repeat the procedure as needed. A low cost, reliable solution.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tough Pump I bought this to supplement the one I bought 21 years ago. This is the same pump. The old one is still working after all those years and heavy punishing use. It sits in my pool cover all winter and despite freezing and thawing many times it works like a charm. Even leaves and debris don't phase it. At 1/4 HP it can take a long time to drain flooded pool cover but no other product does the job like this one. It serves my purposes. I don't know what you want it for but if you need a tough long lasting product this fits the bill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Product! This pump worked beautifully! We drained our pool and had it in 5ft of water and ran it almost constantly for 4 days, only turning it off at bedtime. It never failed us. And the price is definitly right!!! Very easy for a lay person to handle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 1/4 HP Submersible Utility Pump This pump performed just as it is advertised to do. I used it to empty my pond and swimming pool. Performed very well and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a submersible pump.
