Customer Questions & Answers

Pressure treated treds used on decks have v grooves cut in them. Whats the purpose?

I have asked this question in two Home Depot stores and received two different answers.
Asked by: SB
I am no expert, but the 3 V-shaped grooves in the bottom are, i believe, to prevent warp, and you will find that this is a standard feature on most wood treads. Note that the top of this tread also has a set of inch-wide valleys carved into them along the length. There are four of them one inch wide and spaced one inch apart. They are about 3mm deep and are grooved for aesthetics and grip i suppose. You can't really see them in the photo, but they are there if you know what to look for.

Which side is the top? Should the V grooves be visible or on the underside of the step?

Although I consider the lumber good quality, it arrived extremely wet so the jury is still out. I was hoping to stain it but instead have been "turning" it for two weeks with some, albeit less than ideal, progress. It seems the water in the wood just wants to move around the planks according to their position in the "turning." With research and a degree of consternation, I have resigned to the fact that the wood must dry, and perhaps warp, before I can stain it. Who knows what the results will be...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from You Get What You Pay For After going through all the treads at two Home Depot stores, I was final able to find 4 treads; two pretty good shape and two so-so. Cleaned them up and filled knot holes in 2 of the treads. Installed these about a month ago. Already 2 boards are cupping on the front edges and starting to crack on the outside of the treads. This is spite of the fact I applied weatherproofing to all treads, top and bottom and twice to the edges of the treads. I wondered why a milled and grove 2 x 12 was so low in cost. Now I know why - garbage lumber. Home Depot, please have your supplier of these treads mill them from #1 grade treated lumber and increase the price accordingly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NOT WELL TREATED Rotten after 2 years. Bought this because they were precut to correct size and looked good but now I am replacing after 2 years because they completely rotted.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst purchase ever I've purchased many wood products from Home Depot in the past and have always received a solid, quality product. These treads are the exception. Eight of the nine treads rotted within two years. Don't be fooled... they are not as good as they look. HD has plenty of other options to consider.
