Answer:
I thought it was to keep the board from warping over time and am surprised to see an answer from someone identified as with weathershield saying it's for looks ... but also saying in response to the next question that the grooves should be placed facing down?

Answer:
Know when to apply a wood sealer by dripping water onto the treated step tread. If the water quickly absorbs into the wood it's time to apply a wood sealer — If the water droplets bead up, your step tread is protected. Be sure to test annually.

Answer:
Yes. There is no problem with using this product indoors. The main component of the treatment is copper carbonate. There is no more exposure than that of untreated wood in terms of VOCs or emissions.

Rated 2.6 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by GOOD WOOD FOR STAIR STEPS THIS PART OF THE ORDER WAS ACTUALLY CORRECT AND WE HAD EXACTLY WHAT WE NEEDED October 11, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not a great product! The product description was steps 48 inches, but many steps were only 47 1/2, also some steps were split, others warped. To get reasonable quality for 12 steps, I had to buy 20, and it took almost one month. I had to drive back to the store to return the faulty steps. Very time consuming, and not a great product. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Porch tread steps Good sturdy steps; good quality wood used; product arrived in good shape July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by stair project stringer and treads have not had a chance to complete my stair project yet but the wood arrived quickly and saved me a lot of time I cost with the free shipping December 29, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by You Get What You Pay For After going through all the treads at two Home Depot stores, I was final able to find 4 treads; two pretty good shape and two so-so. Cleaned them up and filled knot holes in 2 of the treads. Installed these about a month ago. Already 2 boards are cupping on the front edges and starting to crack on the outside of the treads. This is spite of the fact I applied weatherproofing to all treads, top and bottom and twice to the edges of the treads. I wondered why a milled and grove 2 x 12 was so low in cost. Now I know why - garbage lumber. Home Depot, please have your supplier of these treads mill them from #1 grade treated lumber and increase the price accordingly. August 25, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst purchase ever I've purchased many wood products from Home Depot in the past and have always received a solid, quality product. These treads are the exception. Eight of the nine treads rotted within two years. Don't be fooled... they are not as good as they look. HD has plenty of other options to consider. August 16, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Mediocre Product I installed these over a year ago. They are OK but be sure to predrill. May 30, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by NOT WELL TREATED Rotten after 2 years. Bought this because they were precut to correct size and looked good but now I am replacing after 2 years because they completely rotted. March 23, 2015
