Answer:
you are dealing with dimensional lumber here. a 2x4 is not actually a 2x4 and this is the same difference with the spindles. they finish out at about 1 3/8" square.

Answer:
I used a 4 inch spacer and top nailed them with a 2 1/2 in pneumatic brad, and then added a 7 penny galvanized nail. The bottom rail I face nailed with the 7D nail.

Answer:
above all methods you do not want to put a screw downward thru the top. I had 2 cordless drills, one with a pilot drill bit and the second with a torx head deck screw bit and went from underneath toenailing fashion. After countersinking the screw head a bit,, they were invisible.

Answer:
Fasten the wood spindle directly to the face of the handrail with an exterior deck screw. Be sure to pre-drill each baluster at least one inch from the end.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.3 out of 5 by 12 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Purchase Ever !!! I am amazed at the quality of this spindle. I really wonder how they can provide nice design, quality wood and deliver it with in the same cost that you just get a plain spindle in the stores. I usually don't write reviews as I believe it is waste of time but when I really feel it is good deal I wanted everyone to grab it so i decided to write this review. You can see it in the pictures... Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A VERY nice money saver! I ordered 180 of the spindles for a large wrap around porch on a Victorian. I saved about $3 per spindle, so price was VERY important. The quality is very good, but not "excellent". They are not all the EXACT same length, and the top and bottom are slightly different where the turning is done. All of them had paper bar codes stapled to one end, so that was the end I cut. Giving me consistency in where the turnings lined up. Also, they were quite wet and heavy when they arrived, and I was worried about them warping. I stacked them up criss cross in the sun for a few days and only a few warped. I painted everything when I was done and it came out beautifully! December 15, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good enough. Several of the spindles were warped to the point that they were unusable; fortunately I didn't need all of them. March 29, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by it's not even close to 2in Some pieces are wet. All are wrong dimension. Low quality August 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by exterior railings I have built 130 foot of exterior railing around the deck on the house and spaced the spindles only one spindle width apart and they look great. As with any treated lumber you have to use it up right away or at least get both ends of it secured or it will try to crawl off (warping). For the price they are great. out of a batch of 100 there was 5 that I could not use. 5% is not bad. December 2, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Wrong dimensions cited Ordered two pavkages of these to replace my dekaying outdor spindles that are 2 1/2 inches (I could not find that size anywhere) thinking these will look almost that good. When the package arrived I was unpleasently surprised: the spindles are only 1 3/8 inches. This was a great dissapointmnt since the measurement is mot even close to the 2 inches that the item description states. Other than the wrong dimensions everything else is ok, the bundle packaged up tightly to prevent warping. Still don't know will i used them or not. August 3, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not what I wanted but the best I could find There were two spindles that were split when I got them, but luckily I didn't need all of them. May 12, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointing purchase I was very disappointed in the quality of the spindles. A few were warped, some where unevenly cut, black marks that couldn't be sanded out. Workmanship was very poor. I can't stain these as I intended for the bookcase we are building. I will paint them white and hope they look ok. I would not recommend this. November 11, 2014
