Product Overview

The Classic aluminum stair railing provides a crisp, clean look pairing a molded top rail and a square bottom rail with square pickets. Combining the durability, strength and low maintenance of aluminum, the Classic Aluminum Railing is made to last a lifetime. The Classic's molded top rail is 1.337 in. x 2.25 in. and the square bottom rail is 1.305 in. x 1.352 in. Pickets are 0.75 in. square. The brackets adjust from 30-37 degrees. The rails are 70.5 in. long. However, since the railing is being installed at an angle, the coverage will be less than the rail length.

  • Boxed kit includes top and bottom rail, 4 adjustable brackets and fasteners
  • Step by step installation instructions are provided.
  • Railing is intended for use with a 3 in. x 3 in. post kit (available to purchase separately- LBAL-POSTKIT-3 x 44) or may be installed between existing posts
  • Rails are 70.5 in. long
  • Sections may be cut down on site
  • Works with 30 Degree to 37 Degree angles
  • Textured black color
  • No special tools or skills are required, making this the perfect product for both a do-it-yourself homeowner and a professional contractor

Is the length of the rail measured horizontally (the run of the steps) or along the slope?

Is the length of the rail measured horizontally (the run of the steps) or along the slope?
Asked by: 56willys
It is measured along the slope, but you are actually going to mark the rails in place to define the cut locations. You are asked to set the top/bottom rails next to the posts with 2 balusters, one on each end. Be sure the balusters are fully seated so the rails are parallel. Get the balusters plumbed perfectly vertical and clamp the rails (gently) to the posts while you mark them. You then draw a line on the rails using the post as your guide. The lines on the rails will be at an angle based on the ramp of the staircase. There is a helpful set of directions on how to go from your rail marks to making the correct cut marks. That's where you need to do a double-check to be sure the cut locations will give you matching top and bottom lengths, and the balusters will be plumb.

Can I shorten the length of the 72 inch rail to approx. 36 inches ?

Asked by: TUTU
Yes, but be careful to review your cut locations so that the end balusters are equally spaced from the 2 posts, and do not interfere with the brackets. It can be a little tricky to be sure the balusters don't end up interfering with the brackets on all 4 locations.

Good installation instructions and required hardware to connect to posts. Good quality self tapping screws. Be sure to double-check the cut locations as it is a little confusing how to position the cut lines based on the traced lines. The top rail should be the same length as the bottom rail when you do the check measurement prior to cutting. I'd cut one side first, then check ballisters for equal alignment top to bottom with your post. Once installed it is very solidly mounted.

The enclosed directions from the manufacturer, however, were not as good. Laying out a stair rail in a given location is much more complicated than the conditions assumed in the directions. The biggest failure is in the directions for cutting the balusters to the correct length: it would have been helpful if the directions noted that the balusters fit into a socket-like recess in the rails. Failing to recognize that, I incorrectly cut the balusters. Fortunately the fix was relatively easy (raising the bottom rail 1/2"). This kit was installed at a customer's home earlier this month and was well received by the homeowner, who originally thought he wanted a custom built unit; however, at five times the cost and months of lead time, this Home Depot item was a much better choice.

This project was horrible AND I found out that I didn't order the top handrail (sold separately) but not noted anywhere. The picture on line doesn't represent what you're buying!! Directions for install are next to useless. The brackets that hold the end fixtures in place don't join well, so everything is loose.
