The Weber 22 in. Smokey Mountain Cooker Smoker boasts a whopping 726 sq. in. of cooking space across two plated-steel grill grates-enough room to smoke a full-size bird and several slabs of ribs simultaneously. Can't decide 18.5 or 22.5

I'm new to smoking food. I have tried it on my weber genesis grill which turned out fine but I want to smoke turkeys for thanksgiving and I think WSM would be the better way to go but what size should I get? I've read that the 22.5 burns alot of fuel and is hard to maintain temps. where as the 18.5 wont hold large meats like whole racks of ribs you have to cut them in half which is no big deal but will it hold a turkey? Or turkeys?

By all means get the 22.5" model, you won't be sorry! It's better to have a little to much room than not enough when you need it. You can Barbecue small or large on the 22.5' Smokey Mountain Cooker, use less fuel to cook smaller amounts of food! Hope this helps with you're question!

The 22-1/2 inch is very large, but the other day I made 4 racks of ribs and 5 pounds of chicken wings at the same time. It's great to be able to make all that if you have room to store the grill. btw: Wings on the smoker are unbelievable! If you have never tried them, you don't know what you're missing.

I saw a guy do it on you tube. he curled it up in a circular shape and tied his feet together. took him about 6-8 hrs. Temperature hold is superb and fuel consumption is not bad. I've had 10 hour cooks with one large bag of charcoal and wood chunks. Plus you can always use less if cooking less. We have two WSM units that we use for competition BBQ and I would recommend the 22" version. Yes, the 22" version does burn more fuel as their is more volume to heat inside the unit, but does give you the greater flexibility to do turkey's and whole racks of ribs. I have the 22.5 and have not had any problem with it using a lot of fuel or maintaining temperatures. If you use the Minion Method for building your fire, it will go for 12 to 14 hours easily. You can find out more about the Minion Method on the Internet.

If you want to smoke turkeys pick the 22.5
If you only want to smoke one turkey - 18 is fine.
The 22.5 does burn a lot of fuel, but it gives you the option to smoke a lot of meat at once. Just buy some hardwood charcoal to mix with your dry wood.

Fill up the pan with as much charcoal as you need and scoop out about 1/2 a chimney full and light that and then return that to the rest of the charcoal and you'll be able to hold low temps for longer periods and burn much less fuel. I did 8 full baby back ribs over the summer with 4 on top and 4 on the bottom all laying down without the need for cramming them into rib holders, so much easier and a much more even smoke throught. I recently bought the 22.5 and smoked a 20# turkey, 2 hens, 2 ribs and 8 short ribs in 9 hours. I used a 15# bag of charcoal with chestnut sood for smoke. I could have easily have smoked 4 smaller turkeys in this smoker at one time.

Thank you for your question. It’s really a matter of preference and what will work best for you and your needs. Both models work extremely well. The 18.5” is fairly deep when the top cooking grate is removed. This should allow for one average size turkey of 12 to 14 pounds to fit properly. I am buying this for my brothers bday and it will be his first smoker. He loves to grill large for his huge family and likes to use wood chips. With no tray, can he still use the chips?

Can I have this shipped his house in GA, is there a fee? Also, is this difficult to assemble? If yes, can I pay for the smoker to be assembled?

I tried chips, but found the chunks worked better for me. Chips might work if you used some sort of box to hold them. When I used chips by themselves they burned up rather quickly.

I prefer wood chunks mixed into the coal. No tray needed. Also chips will have a higher chance of over smoking your food. Once you switch to chunks, it's much easier!

It's not really good to use wood chips on this model, use large chunks or split log wood, it'll truly serve you better plus it will last much longer than chips. This unit is a real Barbecue Pit, it's not a grill & it's very well made & should last you for many years with a little care! I hope this helps answer your question.

No, out of the box it's not rigged for natural gas use. I know some people have gone far to rig up their cooker with a gas line and burner... I'd say if you're going through that much trouble, you should just buy a different cooker.

The Weber Smokey Mountain is for charcoal only. It is truly a smoker and not a grill. It is designed for low and slow. The ultimate temperate would be 225-250 degrees. I would suggest hardwood charcoals such as Hickory or Mesquite and not briquettes.

No. It uses charcoal and wood. It is not designed to use any form of gas. It works beautifully, and I use it often, turning out great smoked meats. But, only with charcoal and wood.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Smoker ever The instructions tell you how many briquettes to use for each type of meat you're going to cook and it is spot on. I've cooked pork butt and ribs, never had to add any briquettes and both came out perfect. I put a digital grate thermometer on the top grill where my meat was going to be and found out the thermometer on the hood was 25 degrees cooler so don't trust it. It also gets condensation on the glass which makes it hard to read sometimes. The WSM comes up to temperature really fast and takes about 1/2 hour to adjust the dampers to stay at the cooking temperature you want. The first cook I wasn't sure about it so I stayed close to check the temperature throughout the cook. The second time, when I got it adjusted to 225 degrees, I felt comfortable enough to go to bed and leave it alone. About 6 hours later I checked it and had only lost 2 degrees. Once you get it set you can do other things and not have to worry about it. July 26, 2016

My WSM was up to temp by 7am and I pulled the brisket off at 4:00pm once the meat reached an internal temp of 200". It turned out fantastic thanks to this simple and reliable smoker. It was easy to set up and fool proof once I dialed in the temperature. What I really like about this smoker is the size. I can clean it out and have it tucked back into my garden shed in no time. First setting up the smoker was super easy, added wheels for mobility, and honestly right out the box it held temperature without any major adjustments. Had to add charcoal about 4-5 hours into my cook. Not bad if I must say,. Super easy to use and maintain temp for any long cook. Also did baby back ribs, but left them on too long. Smoked for about two hours then wrapped them in foil for another three and they literally fell off the bone. Way too done for me. Used Apple and Hickory wood chunks. Also held temp even when it was cold out, I think I was in the low 30's that day so I can imagine how much better it should perform in warmer weather. Even thinking about entering some competitions in the near future! Overall a solid investment so if you are on the fence trust me you won't be disappointed! March 22, 2016

The problem is, it worked me to death, because it wouldn't hold temp for very long. That is not the case with this 22.5" WSM. I've cooked on it 4 times so far, including two overnight cooks, and it has been amazing. On both overnight cooks, I went to bed and left it alone all night...no problem, still holding temp the next morning. I could never do that with an offset. The last overnight pork butt I smoked was a 9 pounder that took 14 hours at 235*. The WSM never waivered. I did use one large bag of Kingsford, but only one of my normal post oak splits that I use on the offset, cut up into fist sized chunks. For a 14 hour smoke on the offset, I would've used 22-25 splits. It has almost twice the cooking surface of the XL BGE, but at 1/3 the price. I added the wheels myself...very simple mod. The only problem I see with the 22.5" WSM is it's making me lazy. March 15, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Weber Smokey mountain grill I recently purchased the weber smokey mountain and the smoker is awesome with (1) exception a $400.00 smoker with a $2.00 door unacceptable. I had seen reviews on the door on line but until I received my grill I couldn't believe how cheap and uneven the door is I love the grill but hate the door. June 21, 2016
