Answer:
In my opinion, yes.. I use this with charcoal as well as wood 'chunks'
While I do not do a lot of food smoking, these could easily work... (I have a Char-Broil grill with a side burner / smoker unit.... These holder fit fine...)

Answer:
The way I would do this is to use lump charcoal and add the wood chunks on top. Wood chunks by themselves do not burn as well as charcoal.

I had ordered these from from another company to replace our worn out ones. They just came today. However, one is bigger than the other. Are these two Home Depot charcoal fuel holders the same size? Thanks.

Capacity of holders vs. starter?

I'm curious about the capacity of these two charcoal holders. If I fill a standard (6 quart?) volcano-style charcoal holder, then dump the briquettes into the two holders, will they hold all of it? Or do you use less charcoal than the full volcano starter can hold?

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product These charcoal holders work great with a rib rack. December 30, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not well made but a necessary evil The charcoal holders work well in my Weber grill. They help to vary the heat from a hot direct heat to a more indirect heat by positioning the holders apart. However with constant use of the grill the holders have to be replaced because they fall apart. Be prepared to replace them after a couple of seasons use. December 15, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product for containing briquettes. These fuel holders are great for setting up a Weber Kettle for the "Indirect Method" of cooking/smoking meats. I have used them for smoking ribs and also for cooking whole chickens on a vertical roaster. Best when used in conjunction with the Chimney Fire Starter to light the briquettes. October 13, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fuel holders These work very well for keeping the heat in a controlled area. So it's easier to cook in indirect heat and if you need direct heat just slide them together August 30, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by ESSENTIAL GRILL TOOL works well on my 22.5" for either indirect heat or confining small amount of charcoal for smaller grilling needs September 1, 2015
