Customer Questions & Answers

Do I also need lighter fluid or just newspaper and a match?

Asked by: laares33
I use the Weber cubes. I place them on top three of them just under the coals, works great. Easier than messing with newspapers, etc. Weber Lighter Cubes. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Lighter-Cubes-24-Pack-7417/202843410

Does this starter hold enough charcoal to fill the coal grate? We like a rather large fire.

Asked by: Double2Double
depends on how large your grate is but it holds more than most.

What is the purpose of the metal piece which looks like a hanger?

See image.
Asked by: lcnorvell
The wire piece that looks like a hanger is to be used, (with heat resistant gloves on), to allow you to pour the coals just where you want them on the grill.

Is the bottom of the chimney open or are the coals simply held in place by the newspaper?

Asked by: Lenell
The chimney starter has a metal grid that keeps the charcoal from falling out the bottom. The paper is stuffed at the bottom and lit to burn the paper, which in turn lights the charcoals.

Just fill it with charcoal straight out of the bag (not match light) and then tear off some of the bag itself to put underneath and light. I have literally used it hundreds of times and never needed to light it a second time. With no lighter fluid to burn off, it is perfect every time in 20 minutes flat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've been doing it the hard way Since I was a young the only way I knew to light charcoal was to drown it with lighter fluid and set it ablaze. Not anymore fill this up, put one or two starter cubes under and bam your briquettes are ready to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast and easy I bought this along with my Weber Performer grill because it was highly recommended on a number of grilling aficionado web sites. Really glad that I did. Simple, but yet ingenious! No more soaking briquettes with lighter fluid. Add a couple of pages of newspaper to the bottom, add the appropriate amount of briquettes for your purposes, and light one match (OK, I used an extended butane charcoal lighting lighter.) In 15 minutes, remove the chimney, stow it in a safe place (I put it on the lower rack of my Performer), and arrange the coals for direct or indirect heat. That simple! No flammable liquids or noxious fumes. Less waiting, more grilling.
