I recently got a Weber coal grill even though I loved my bigger gas grill. I went ahead and got this chimney and am so glad that I did. I will never be without one again. However I was impatient & wanted to use this right away but didn't read the instructions thoroughly because it said to place on the coal rack. Dummy me, I set it on the cooking rack (see my photo). But I kept a close eye on it and my hose ready, but it never tipped over and did the job it was intended for. So, lesson learned. Now I remove the cooking rack and set it on the coal rack while lighting the coals. I feel safer knowing it is sitting lower in the grill and not apt to tip over. It does discolor after use, but it doesn't diminish from its performance. I also chose to use hardwood coal (Royal Oak brand) and got a package of the Weber fire starter cubes because I didn't want my food to taste like chemicals from the traditional formed coal briquettes and lighter fluid. I set the cube under the chimney and lit it with one of those large handle lighters and it lights on first try. The coals burn quickly and evenly. I do however recommend wearing protective gloves when handling the chimney. Don't hesitate, get one. You'll be cooking in no time and your food will taste amazing !

I bought this along with my Weber Performer grill because it was highly recommended on a number of grilling aficionado web sites. Really glad that I did. Simple, but yet ingenious! No more soaking briquettes with lighter fluid. Add a couple of pages of newspaper to the bottom, add the appropriate amount of briquettes for your purposes, and light one match (OK, I used an extended butane charcoal lighting lighter.) In 15 minutes, remove the chimney, stow it in a safe place (I put it on the lower rack of my Performer), and arrange the coals for direct or indirect heat. That simple! No flammable liquids or noxious fumes. Less waiting, more grilling.

What a great product! My mother has a duel gas/charcoal grill. I do most of the grill cooking when I'm there. She likes coal as opposed to gas, so I saw this Rapidfire Chimney Charcoal Starter, bought it, tried it and was amazed at how well it started the charcoal.
I used a fuel pellet starter first, which worked great, then four strips of news paper about the size of a fist, and both used individually was sufficient to ignite the charcoal.
I told my wife about the great invention and she said her dad used it back in the 1960's. Who'd a thunk? In any case, I love this thing and am now using charcoal more than gas.

This model works so much better than two previous charcoal starters. Subtle design differences in interior cone, more air vents at base.

Great item to start up the charcoal. It will create a lot of heat and flames, therefore keep it away from things that could catch on fire easily. However, I don't think I would be starting charcoal without it again. Very easy to use as long as you read the warnings!!!

Have owned a Weber Kettle with gas ignition for years and love it. But the starter baskets that came with the product have worn out. The new chimney charcoal starter has a more solid design and really gets the fire going much more quickly. Wish I'd bought one years ago!
