It is not recommended nor suggested to use a charcoal grill in an enclosed space; which a screened-in porch is considered unless you have an exhaust fan directly over the fumes. I would recommend an electric appliance like a small "George Foreman" grill if you want to cook there. Here is a reference: http://www.southernliving.com/home-garden/solutions/happy-grilling

Answer:
Because of the fact that heat rises the bottom stays relatively cool. That said the bottom vent also allows some ash to escape. That said I don't think I would try to use this on any combustible surface.

There is little to no heat conducted through the legs so it shouldn't cause any damage. However, you will have little bits of charcoal come out which may cause little burn marks. Also, this thing has 3 legs so it won't balance on a single rail or whatever. If you can get a little table to keep it on you should be fine.

It heats up very quickly and might be a fire hazard in a closed area. You will need some sort of ventilation to the outside. It is a high performer that uses very little space. Personally I would not recommend it to be used on a glass enclosed porch.

Smokey Joe Portable Charcoal Grill is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 104.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect size for apartment living and/or making meals for 4 or less I have a small patio and did not want to spare precious room for a large grill. This is the perfect size to grill 3-4 chicken breasts or a small tray of vegetables for one meal - or prepare the food for the week in advance. I keep it tucked behind a chair for storage since it takes up no more room than a large planter but provides all the perks of a larger grill. I prepare my vegetables for the week - brushing with a little olive oil, salt and pepper and I have a full week's worth of meals ready to use in quick reheated wonders like fajitas, stir fry, frittatas, sandwiches and salads.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect size Since buying Smokey (yes, he has a name) I've used it about 4 times. I love that it's light-weight. Easily fits in my trunk. Doesn't need a lot of charcoal to get the job done. I wish the drip tray was easily removable to clean it out. I'd like the handle to be made out of wood because the plastic does get hot sometimes. It's the perfect travel grill and I have a tiny home so it's really easy to store away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As Good as It Gets I have owned this small grill for many years. It is the only grill a person needs, because the circular grilling area is deceptively large. And, why a large grill at all? The small grill allows you to sit down when cooking. People using the monster grills of modern days need to go find chairs. Smokey Joe is as good a consumer purchase as there is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stop the gas! Sure I have a gas BBQ like everybody else. But you know sometimes you just have to have "charbroiled"! Inconvenient yet worth it. So if you have to do it do it right. Quality? Weber is and always has been the best choice. This little porcelain baby will do the trick for decades.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nice little grill Very good product since it is easy to move around. You have to manually dump the charcoal out. And you really have to watch your food since the flame is so close to the food. But all that aside its a really nice little grill. Go get yourself one today.

The lid could use a hook, like the larger models, so there is a place to put it, instead of laying it down, while it's being opened, to turn or check on what's on the grill, otherwise an excellent product, but you can always expect that from Weber.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Grill for everyday cooking The Weber Little Smoky is by far the best small grill for the money. Took me 8 years to wear out my first one just bought a new one this year. Cooks 15 brats at a time or 4 rib eye / ny strip or 2 porterhouse or 8 large burger patties. Great for everyday grilling for a family of 1 to 4. Here’s the best part, for a quick grilling it only takes 25-30 briquettes to cook dinner for any meats I mentioned earlier. Very economical. I also put my coals wetted with lighter fluid in a ziplock bag with a small brush and utensils in the grill and bungee cord it together for use camping or on the pontoon boat. Top and bottom vents makes this grill a great little cooking device. Thanks Weber this thing ROCKS. DWBagley Carrollton, Texas
