The hole is so the tank can fit through when it is hanging on the internal scale. The tank capacity scale is a pretty neat addition to the grill.

There are gas weight feature that you hang up gas tank on. When tank gets lighter due to use of gas it will pushed up by unit springs. Another word tank will never be dropped inside the tank hole.
Hope it helped.

Yes it does! Has a nice cut out that it fits into and is hidden behind the two doors so you can't see it! Heats up very fast ready to grill steaks in 10 minutes or less! Love it!

Answer:
Yes, it uses a standard tank and yes the hole on the bottom is huge. The tank hangs from a hook that is actually a scale. It has markings and will show you when the tank is full to empty. Since the tank is hanging from this hook scale, it moves up as the tank empties out.
The tank was a little tricky to clip onto the hook, but do not worry - a standard tank does the job.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 72 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic Grill :) Overall, this is a great grill that is working with no issues. Cooking area will satisfy one guy or a family of 4, easily. Have grilled several steaks and many ears of corn at one time (with mushroom & onions on the side grill). Cooking space is larger than I anticipated. I enjoy the side "table" and the side grill, which is an additional feature that is practical and enhances cooking options from sauces to just warming food for a few minutes. Also, sensible feature is the weight level "catch" underneath that indicates gas level in the tank. This is a quality product that I would recommend to anyone. Suggest you buy the grill cover for $50.00, covers even when side leafs are out. Lastly, had it ordered, shipped to local Home Depot, grill arrived, put together by HD, delivered & I was cooking on the grill in less than 2 weeks! October 1, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Worthy of the hype The Spirit E-220 was easy to assemble and works great. It heats consistently across the cook space. This is my first Weber and look forward to enjoying it all summer. I did break one of the bolts that was spot welded onto one of the side panels. It was on the 3rd part I put together and I broke it in half towards the end of assembly (while attaching the side shelf). I'll call Weber to see what they can do, but don't look forward to taking it all apart if they send me a replacement part. May 21, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by GREAT GRILL USE IT EVERYDAY Very sturdy and side burner option is a plus. Small footprint and easy to move around patio. January 26, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by much lesser quality than my old weber grill if I had bought it at the store it would have cost the same and I would not have had three hours of assembly time. they just did not have it in stock. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Food with Weber! It's great to be a Weber owner again. The assembly was simple and performance of the grill is perfect. Last night did tri-tip and corn on the grill and crab cakes on the skillet. May 28, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best purchase This grill works great. The frame is sturdy and the metal feels solid. The grill cooks food quickly and heats evenly. May 21, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Weber Grill Pound for Pound thee best grill i ever own..Every thing on this grill is super nice. November 9, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very impressed This is my first Weber grill and I'm very impressed with its features. Heats up quickly and cooks food evenly. Love the propane tank system. Let's you know how much is left in tank so no guessing. I chose the door in front as oppose to the front panel on other models. The door just seemed easier to use. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of a small puck in the grill lid. The paint actually cracked and I'm sure it will need attention in the near future but it wasn't big enough to warrant a return. Not sure if it was made during shipping or factory handling. Box didn't seem damaged on arrival. All in all, it really is a great grill and Home Depot was excellent with their service. July 14, 2015
