Answer:
If the top is closed, the handles stay plenty cool, but if the top is open, the handles are directly over the heat and they will get hot to the touch. Not so hot you can't close it, but hot enough to be uncomfortable if you held your hand there. Use a mitt if your cooking with an open top.

Before I purchase I wanted to confirm that the only difference between the S-470 and E-470 is either Stainless Steel and Ennamel (respectively). All other features and specifications are the same? The description on The Home Depot website doesn't clearly confirm this

yes. the S-470 has the smoker box on the right and the sear station in the middle. I'm pretty sure you're right: the only difference between the S and E is the stainless vs enamel.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 29 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ultimate Weber This is the third Weber Grill we've had in 30 years - always the best choice. You can spend more but the Weber delivers the highest quality for the money and they stand behind their product. So many great features I'm always looking forward to the next time we can grill. July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Weber - A name you can trust for quality and dependability.. This grill is a very high end item that not only is a grill with searing station, smoker, rotisserie but can be use as a kitchen outside where the heat belongs in the warmer months. You have the name Weber standing behind it for directions, maintenance, cooking suggestions and warranty including having repair parts available for the lifetime of your grill. While I have only had mine for a short time I have entertained over Father's Day (Tri Tip on the Weber and Cornish Game Hens (6) rotisseried on my original charcoal grill) with excellent results.I have enjoyed cooking ribs, shrimp, baked potatoes and corn on the cob. The cooking possibilities are endless. I'm very please with my selection given the research I performed and find the expense, while a concern, is worth it. What's is your backyard? June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Couldn't be happier with this grill Arrived in a reasonable amount of time and easy to assemble. You can really tell the difference in the quality of materials and the workmanship in this Weber grill and the ones you see for a lot less money in the wholesale clubs and other retail outlets. It cooks everything wonderfully, has great control knobs that are lighted, as well as the handle light, which makes cooking in the evening much easier. We chose the natural gas model . . . no more refilling gas tanks!! May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Grill I Ever Owned This is my first Weber and it was definetly worth the wait. I've been grilling for over 30 years and started with charcoal but made thw switch to gas about 17 years ago. Basically I just got tired of all the clean up afterwards. Over the years I've purchased several different gas grills it he $300-500 range. They would only last 3-5 years and then needed to be replaced. I was fed up and decided that I wanted something better and longer lasting. I di a lot of research and all the data pointed to Weber grills. I made up my mind and went to Home Depot to see them first hand. Originally I was looking at something a little less pricey but then my pointed to the Summit 470. She said "That's the grill we should get." I was a little reluctant at first but when I saw the built-in smoker box, I was hooked. I have never has a gas grill with so much temperature control. I can smoke ribs and keep the temperature right between 225-250 for the entire grilling process. Everything I've grilled has been perfect and with the Weber guarantee, this grill can't be beat. If your fed up with buying a new gas grill every few years then this is the one for you. September 27, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Grill; Less than desired quality for the Money We had a Sears Elite grill for 10 years. I was never satisfied with the temperature the grill could reach but the quality of the frame and stainless became the benchmark that I used to research other grills. I tried to find this grill in the store to check it out but could not find one. The reviews on the burners were excellent and I have to say it heats up like no grill I have ever had before. We have had to learn to cook on medium heat and it still gets to 500-550 in 10 minutes. Home Depot needs to work on its shipping. Time to delivery is too long. The grill arrived damaged in the box with the bottom and rear panels bent along with both doors. It must have been dropped or hit by a forklift. There was no sign of damage to the shipping container. I called Weber and they replaced all of the damaged parts. They were easy to replace and I am completely satatisfied with the resolution. As for the quality of the grill frame and construction, I am less than satisfied. For the money, the guage of the stainless steel, the frame, the doors and handles should have been higher. The grill has the same flimsiness of the cheaper $500-$1000 models. Its been disappointing from the aspect. Like I said the heat and burning elements are outstanding and I really like cooking on it. If I just didn't have to open those tin can doors..... May 27, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A truly great grill that hits 750 degrees for cooking steaks Easy assembly, little to rust, high temp, very high quality December 15, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works very well Virtually no assembly required! Just a few bits and pieces to install, grates etc. and I was ready to cook! One thing to be aware of is lifting it off the shipping pallet. It's reasonably heavy, my 5'3" wife and I managed without injury, but a third pair of hands to remove the pallet would have been useful. Another is that the new grills don't have a large pair of wheels. So if you have to move it around the back of the house on grass, it had better be firm and dry! Once situated on the deck, It's just like any Weber, rock solid. The ignition system took a little getting used to, push the knob in, rotate to just before the ignition symbol, pause for a 2 count, rotate the last bit and it lights. A bit of practice, but once you get it it's easy. The manual is very limited, no recipes or helpful stuff there! (my previous grills had some really great things) Now it is all on line, with videos, and more recipes than I will likely ever cook! The rotisserie is phenomenal! I LOVE it! So easy, and the results are fantastic. Realistically, it is the main reason for getting this grill. If you like moist, tender, poultry, pork loin, or ribs, this is the grill. I got the natural gas model as I had the hook up installed previously. It's the best! No tanks. In short I would highly recommend this grill. If it lasts like my previous one, 15 years being used 3-4 times per week, I think it's well worth it. I would say, buy a cover! This is important, the grill will get water inside in the rain. This will fill the drip pan in the cupboard underneath, and then the grease etc. will get all over everything. Buy a cover and use it properly. December 15, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My 17 year old Summit worked fine, but all the new features and options are fantastic. Very easy to move in and assemble. There is a bunch of packaging to be recycled. July 7, 2015
