it would be hard to use this to burn wood. as the heat is constant, it comes and goes and can be unpredictable at times.

Answer:
I wouldn't use it for that purpose. Wood burners generally have large mass tips with high temperatures whereas soldering irons have to be precise and control temperature to just be above solder melt point. Too high of a temperature damages circuit boards. So I would say don't use it for that.

Dear Slanky,
It doesn't say anywhere in the instructions about how to use the iron for this. But it doesn't say not to either. Candidly, I've used mine for this seemingly without harm to the device. My only reservation about doing this would be to stick strictly to wood burning and not use it on other materials and be sure that it is completely cleaned before getting back to soldering with it. There is an optional spade tip for this iron which might help in your case. Happy crafting. Sincerely, hamrdul

Answer:
23j, This iron should work for your control board project. The wattage is not as important as the temperature in this situation but at 925° F it should handle your project nicely.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.0 out of 5 by 30 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fast and Easy to Hold Soldering Irong 18-Watt Soldering Iron I love this soldering Iron. Its another great Weller product. It took about 20 seconds for it to heat up which is fantastic. It is ergonomically correct design which means the grip is shaped so it sits in your hand and allows the most finger dexterity possible. It has a light that shines on the work area. I have a picture of me soldering my door bell wires. I also use it to fix other electrical devices such as the switch on my piano keyboard. It is perfect for wires and large circuitry. It is a little too big for delicate circuitry, but that isn't what it was made for. I consider this my new multipurpose soldering iron. I think it is great. August 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just the iron I needed! Straight up, this is a good dependable tool. Not a lot of bells and whistles just a good dependable tool. Its the perfect middle of the road size for everything I need a soldering iron to do. Sometimes I have to solder larger metal parts out in the workshop and sometimes its just some audio wiring for my PA or home stereo. This iron fits the bill for both. It comes with a small conical point which is perfect for connecting even the smallest of circuit wires. There is a optional spade point which is good for metal joining projects. The good thing about this iron is that these points just plug into the front of the iron like a speaker jack. No need for special tools to change things around. I can make repairs to a torn up circuit board or solder my wife's tin lanterns together quickly and easily. It only takes this iron 30 seconds to get to working heat. When you push the "on" switch on the top of the iron the light is red but turns to green when its ready to solder. There is a good work light on this device which lets you see the material and the solder. The iron is molded plastic in a shape which allows resting it on the workbench without any special stand. The rear of the iron has a wide flat place allowing the iron to sit there unattended without worry of scorching anything. It says "Weller" on the side which means I know it will be my soldering tool for the next 10 years or so. July 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome soldering iron! This 18W soldering iron impressed me with perfect 60W performance and great features. It is very comfortable in the hand with rubberized grips and good balance. I like the way it sits without a stand and it heated up in seconds. The LED status light on top shows red and turns green when temperature is reached. The LED working light is an excellent feature. A feature that I like is the phono jack and plug to make changing tips easy and quick. Spare tips are available as a special order purchase at Home Depot (WPS10 - .03125" conical and WPS11 - .125" chisel). It has a 9V DC switching power supply. I was able to quickly finish a wiring project that I had been putting off because my old iron is ancient and it was such a hassle to get it heated and working properly. With this Weller iron, soldering is going to be a pleasure from now on! I had no problems and this iron meets my needs for small repairs. July 21, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by works ok, heat not constant. I've been using this on some small crafts that require soldering. It has been working well enough but it takes longer as it should. The heat delivered is not constant and comes through in uneven waves. At times it's a little hard to predict when it will melt the solder. you just have to sit and wait for it. the LED light is nice as it helps with being able to see what I'm welding a little bit better. I would recommend this if you have the patience to wait for an unpredictable heating element. August 8, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works out the box but tips are proprietary. As stated, the Weller soldering iron works out of the box/package but the tips seem to be an oddball proprietary size. Tips come pre-tinned but found it does help to add more solder and tin them a little better from factory. Handle fits reasonably well in the hand and for smaller board type electronics, this soldering iron works well in that task. July 26, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not so reliable I purchased one and used it the day I bought it. I thought the design was nice since I was using it In a tight space. I was disappointed to find that it kept turning off while I was using it and forcing me to wait for it to heat back up. That was another disappointment as it does not do that very quickly either. July 27, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor quality The removable tip is not a good build quality and once it bends or looses its shape, the tip is so loose that sometimes it just falls off or doesn't transfer heat properly June 7, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Iron I like the design and how fast it heats up. The price is a bit steep, but the iron works great~ May 6, 2016
