The difference between the 2 ladders would be the duty rating. The D1532-2 is rated for 300lbs while the D1332-2 is rated for 250lbs.

The rope is used to aid in raising and lowering the ladder to the proper height for positioning the ladder because a user would not be able to reach the maximum height of the ladder by simply standing on the ground. Using the pulley mechanism, the rope will pull the fly, or the extension section of the ladder, up to raise to the correct height. Using the rope again to lift the fly off of the rung lock, the locks will then allow this section of the ladder to lower. Using the rope will allow the user to bring the ladder down in a controlled manner, not dropping the section. Read Less

Answer:
Hi Jo, there is a pulley close to the top on one of the rungs. You pull the rope to get the ladder to extend. That's the purpose of the rope. You can also add some accessories to this ladder like a painter hook.

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 11 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by 2 duds in a row . I used the first one only 3-4 times, it stuck and would not come down. Swapped for a new one. Then the next day, on my first attempt after extending it, AGAIN it would not come down. The plastic is not smooth and catches on the rung. July 29, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Lightweight but a little bouncy This is a decent 32' ladder. It's lightweight (I can carry it around and set it up myself no problem, and I'm not a big guy). It has good stability on level ground and has good skid protection on the feet (pavement or dirt). However the ladder gets pretty bouncy at a 3/4 full extension or more. I'm only 185 lbs and it gets a little concerning at times. I wouldn't want to be a 250 lb guy 20-30' up on this ladder. Otherwise, I can easily reach the gutters on a 2 1/2 story custom colonial without even fully extending and since it's lightweight it's easy to adjust and move around. The price is a bit high, but they all are at this size. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by surprising sturdy 32ft up and it's much sturdier than my 20 and 24ft ladders. able to be handled by 1 person. good buy March 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Lightweight and strong Did the job getting to my two and a half high story gutters and getting up to a high tree with multiple broken branch as high as the house. For the less experienced DiY'er, two people are a must to jack up this extension ladder. Because it was lightweight, I convinced a friend to haul it on our padded shoulders one mile to my home. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good ladder-perfect for my home projects The 32 foot extension ladder is exactly what I need for my home maintenance needs. February 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Capable Ladder Video Review Attached! We bought this ladder specifically to hang Christmas Decorations on our house. Great reach. I love the rope to pull (extend) the ladder to our required height. Not a light tool, we needed two people to handle it safely. Just a bit unwieldy at times. Very comfortable rungs and when I climbed it (185 pound guy) it felt very stable. Here's a video I put together on youtube. A nice buy, we'll use this for years to come. December 19, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 32 Ft. Ladder Thie ladder is lightweight but sturdy and well worth the price. December 23, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good ladder Tried the 225 lb type II ladder first. It was easy to move around but too flexible for my liking at full extension. So I returned it and purchased the 250 lb type I. Much better. It's heavier and more difficult to move, but more stable. I use it with a stabilizer, and have no problem working/painting at the peak of my two story colonial. The only thing that would make this a better ladder is a thicker rope for lifting the extension.
