Customer Questions & Answers

Does this ladder come as a kit, with the frame, the door/opening and the pole to pull the ladder down with?

Asked by: Toddie
The ladder, a spring-assist arm, screws, twisting door-latch, door hinges, mounting template and a grabber-pole are included, no frame or door (no wood).

I see the required opening is 18 x 24, but it does't show which side is the longer side?

From the picture, it looks like the side on which the ladder rests is the shorter side but I can't be sure.
Asked by: monamona100
The dropped door shows the long side -- the ladder needs the 24" to drop down, so 18" wide, 24" length running towards you. Darn.

Weight limit

At 230 lbs, I'm not the lightest fellow in the world. This unit would work for me, but it would limit what I could carry up. Does Werner sell a similar ladder (telescoping, non-scissor design) with a higher weight rating?
Asked by: TDL7
To relieve the excess stress of my weight, plus the item being stored, I am installing a bracket and pulley directly above the attic access. With a long enough rope, I can raise and lower items from the floor or the attic, and... the weight will be cut in half by the pulley

I see that the minimum height is 7', but my barn ceiling is only 79'--is there any way to make this ladder work?

Asked by: Scootnsail
If you are putting this in a barn - for safety reason - spend the extra money and buy a better quality . for things you put up top in a barn you need a heavy duty attic ladder with frame.

7 ft. - 9 ft., 18 in. x 24 in. Compact Aluminum Attic Ladder with 250 lb. Maximum Load Capacity is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 114.

I installed this along with a fire rated door (did not use the door hardware included in the kit). There are a lot of parts but the instructions are well written. It probably took an hour to assemble. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that during one trip up or down the ladder I cut the bottom of my foot on something (just wearing socks). Because it is a compact ladder, there is not a lot of spare room on the rungs. Wear shoes when using this ladder.

This is an incredible design, perfect for using on the edges of my two storage lofts. I got two, one for each separate loft. There is no frame, so it installed easily with just a few screws, and is really easy to deploy then put back up. Really nice not to have to use up floorspace for stairs or a ladder. I give this an AAAAA+!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for tight spaces and easy to assemble Super easy to assemble and install the ladder itself. The hatch was a different story. The hinges are very small and wouldn't fit well for me when following their installation instructions because I have a plaster ceiling. In the end I was able to mount the hatch higher up in the ceiling opening and attach the hinges to the studs. I also mounted a wire rope on the back of the hatch for security as the hatch is above our bed and the hinges felt a bit weak. Werner also does seem to have some quality assurance issues: The first ladder I purchased was bent so I had to go back to the store and have it replaced. The second one had a few non-essential parts missing so I never bothered replacing it.

Unlike alot of other products they do not show you the actual screw pictures to be able to match them up, you have to guess, and if your a novice at home improvement, probably have to switch them a couple of times. I have remodeled 2 older houses, during the work myself and find the directions and pictures for laying out and installing the power assist arm to be the biggest confusion factor. Ended up going on line to watch the video on this part a couple of times. In the end did get it successfully installed, but I am pretty much mechanically inclined, sorry for those of you that aren't. Final thought, would have expected better from Werner Ladder on installation instructions.

Was a great choice for our small attic entrance. Only recommendation would be for a better pull down handle/pole design. I have 9 ft ceilings and the small handle which is attached to the assist pole doesn't grab the ladder very well while it's stowed away overhead and makes pull down of the ladder somewhat difficult. May have to fabricate a new handle myself, but I would recommend this product.

All though I have not installed my ladder yet, it meet all of my reasons for purchase. The height is adjustable, I do not have to modify my attic opening, and I can install it in 1 day with little or no help. Ordering on-line and having it delivered to my home was a nice option. I could not find a comparable ladder locally.

Finally I found a attic ladder that fits the small access hole that I have to my house that was built in 1911, without changing the size of the opening. It doesn’t hold very much weight, but all I store are xmas decorations, clothing and things that I only occasionally use. Very happy!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exactly what we needed This Werner Compact Attic Ladder is great when you have limited access space to your attic. The ladder is narrow and light but still feels solid when I'm standing on it. I'm challenging the 250 max... I like the handrail but am thinking about removing it as it does block some of my access opening. I might also remove the upper stop tabs so the ladder top sits more flush with the attic floor. Will decide on these adjustments after I bring up a couple boxes and tubs. Make sure to use 3/4 plywood around the attic floor opening where you will attach the ladder. You will appreciate the extra support it give. Overall, it is pretty simple to assemble and install. As other reviews noted, it was a bit challenging to distinguished between the various sized nuts, bolts and screws without having a metric ruler. That is the only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars...
