I thought all sink strainers were set with putty or silicone? Does the rubber create a tight seal by itself?

Answer:
Some plumbers putty has a chemical that will damage the finish of the product. We recommend using a silicone type of product, like a GE or DAP brand. The rubber seal, along with silicone, will form a water tight seal.
