can I put a p-trap on drain to keep smell from backing up

Answer: 
Yes, and actually a trap is required by the plumbing code. Once you install one, there will be no sewer gas smell coming up through the tub drain.

The answer is yes. In most cities all drains are required to have traps.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not bad for the money... The trip lever assembly is very hard to get inside the overflow, making adjustments difficult. Once correctly adjusted, it works fine. I didn't use the chrome trim, but it looks nice. I also had a VERY slow drip from one of the seals, probably my own fault; I fixed that with a little silicone. A good value compared to some of the far more expensive models I looked at. July 23, 2011
