The fan light switch it used to replace the light switch. You need a 3 speed fan switch to operate the fan speed control.

The light switch that you purchased is for a 2 circuit ceiling fan (a fan that has 2 separate lights). We do carry a fan light switch, our item # 7702300 that is for a single light circuit.

A 4 wire switch cannot be replaced with a 3 wire switch.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Westinghouse 3 way light switch My light switch broke on my ceiling fan, and was going to buy a new fan. I decided to take it apart first, and noticed the switch sitting right there. So I went on Home Depots website and typed "3 way ceiling fan light switch" and voolah, there it was with even the same color wires. My fan has 2 separate light fixtures so I needed this one which would turn one light on, other one off, vice versa, or both off. It worked great. Thanks Home Depot!!! April 28, 2013
