Answer:
Maybe--it depends on the new light that you install. If it has a standard bell, the bell will be at an angle, and the chain will hang from it.

Do I need to use the metal cover plate and medallion?

If my can is small enough to be covered by the new light fixture's cover plate, do I need to use the metal cover and medallion that comes with the kit? I'm concerned that the medallion will be "too much" given how close the fixtures are to each other.

Answer:
I had a 4" recessed light and the bell from my new pendant light completely covered the 4" hole, so I didn't use the metal bracket/medallion (bonus cause the medallion is a bit ugly).
It depends on the size of your new light fixtures cover.

Answer:
No. You dont have to. If you look at my review, you will see on one light I did use it, the other did not need it. It depends of how big the light you are installing is with respect to the plate.

I live in a rental building. If I have this installed, can they be un-installed so the can light will function properly again?

Answer:
The Recessed Light Converter does not change the operation of the recessed fixture it is installed in, and can be removed to allow the recessed fixture to be used. However, the installation of the Recessed Light Converter does require screwing into the side of the recessed fixture, and will leave permanent screw holes behind if removed.

This kit includes a round decorative plate that covers the outer edges of the recessed light hole in the ceiling. The new flange plate included with the new ceiling fixture mounts in the center of the kit plate. The aforementioned decorative plate may not be needed if the new fixture plate covers the entire original hole in the ceiling. However, the main support for the new ceiling light is the sheet metal cylinder of the original recessed light. So be aware of how this metal cylinder is attached to the above ceiling structure. It may not be adequate for a ceiling fan. Read Less

Answer:
This definitely cannot be used with a flush mount ceiling fan/light kit or any type of ceiling fan. It is designed for use with recessed cans, mini pendants and some fixtures.

Answer:
I would say no to that. A ceiling fan needs to be attached to a ceiling box that is structurally mounted to the framework of the ceiling. I doubt that the recessed can light is fastened as securely as necessary.
And the bracket provided to mount a light is not strong enough either.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 67 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked like a charm Needed to convert two canister recessed lights into pendents. The installation video was very helpful and easier to follow than the directions. Now my wife is happy so I am happy. May 1, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice adapters for updating can lights Used these to update can lights to pendants (Commercial Electric1-Light Rustic Iron Mini Pendant). At first I did not like the trim rings, but they grow on you. There was a metal ring included that I did not use. The trim rings fit flush without them. The instructions did not explain why/when they are needed. April 13, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My electrician loved this!!! I had called my electrician to replace my recessed lights by putting in an electrical box. I picked these up, mostly for the medallion. When I showed it to him he was really excited and insisted on using them. They came out awesome!!! The only issue was screwing in the cross bar. The video shows a can that is aluminum so the screw went in easily. My cans were steel and it took a little more effort to screw them in. Pre drilling a hole would help. As it turned out, I didn't use the medallion that came with it. Instead I purchased the 10". It looks much better. The one that comes with it is deeper and hid the beauty of the canopy. My lights were not even and he was able to center them by sliding the bracket to one side and now they are perfect. I'm not sure if my neck would have allowed me to put it up myself. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So much better and so easy! When we bought our house the foyer had a recessed eyeball bulb light. I figured it would be a major rewire, new junction box, etc to put in a pretty chandelier. I was quite excited when I saw this product in the store. It only took my husband a few minutes to change it out and now our foyer looks so much better. I would highly recommend this product. February 23, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A little tricky, but an easy fix We bought a house that had recessed lighting in all the rooms. This made the rooms look like they were ready for slam poetry. The key to this kit is to find the right drill bit to get through the sides of the recessed fixture. Besides that, it was a simple install. The lighting looks great and we will probably purchase additional kits to replace the other fixtures. December 29, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by awesome product swapped 2 out of 5 recessed lights (over the island) in our kitchen (builder grade) and hung gorgeous mini chandelier!!! best invention ever!!! medallions are a bit cheesy but I spray painted in a glossy white... it helped some, but we plan to purchase some more decorative medallions to replace them with. (they are necessary to cover the hole) December 14, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great find I did not know how to convert a recessed light to a flush mount light until I found this kit. It was pretty easy to do. The kit is worth it! May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for updating a recessed lighting fixture. Had new lights installed. Found a matching pendant light, but I have a recessed flood light?? After some searching on internet I came across this adapter. Electrician came in yesterday installed this adapter for my new light fixture. So simple just screw in the socket, attach wires, what a great idea!! Came with a matching cover base that I was able to spray paint to match my fixture. Thanks Home Depot for carrying this product in store!! April 5, 2016
