Customer Questions & Answers

Will this product support a ceiling fan?

Asked by: Iopelco
Yes I believe it will. As long as the fan is less than 50 lbs. I used it for a pretty weighty crystal pendant and it is very stable.

How do you get the side screws to screw into a metal can?

Asked by: Dale
It comes with self-tapping screws. It takes some effort but with my drill and patience, they secured nicely.

Do I need to use the metal cover plate and medallion?

If my can is small enough to be covered by the new light fixture's cover plate, do I need to use the metal cover and medallion that comes with the kit? I'm concerned that the medallion will be "too much" given how close the fixtures are to each other.
Asked by: SMYinNH
Yes, if you don't, you're likely to see a gap around the light fixture once you install it as the diameter of most pendants is much smaller than can lights.

Medallion Diameter?

What is the diameter of the medallion? My lighting coverplate is only 4 inches diameter and if the medallion is too big, I'm wondering if it will look odd.
Asked by: mel
The medallion is big enough to cover the hole that your 6" canned recessed light is installed in. The hole in the center of the medallion is small enough to be covered by a 4" canopy. See the photo of my installation to see if that helps you visualize it.

Recessed Light Converter for Pendant or Light Fixtures is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 165.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does What It Should Converted a recessed light fixture over our tub to hang a small chandelier. The housing of the existing fixture was too strong for the screws, I needed to use a drill bit to drill through first in order to secure the bracket. As a home owner, you know a 30 min easy job usually ends up way longer ha. In my case the fixture was not flush mounted to the ceiling and 3/4 dry wall made it not possible to latch the cover, but with the new light I still used the cover it is just secured by the being tight to the ceiling. No big deal. All said and done the results certainly speak for them selves. Thanks Home Depot for having these items in store. (converter and chandelier). $150 is all this cost to take an ordinary bathroom to upscale. This was a suprise for the wife and she was Loved it!

I used this product to hang two pendant lights over the island in the kitchen. Everything needed was supplied. The base doesn't fit perfectly with the tin shield, but you wouldn't notice it unless you knew. Very please with the product and outcome!

We used this product to replace the can lights in our home with track lights and had good results. A helpful trick is to use a small piece of duct tape to hold the heat shield in place while assembling other parts.

While it makes sense in concept, I spent over an hour installing and reinstalling this converter before returning it. The bar does not mount far enough up into the can, even with the zip screws that attach it to the can. The ears of the mounting bar hang down below the rim of the existing can just enough to make the plastic trim ring not flush with the ceiling. This is largely because the metal plate rests directly on the ears, and the plastic trim ring sits directly on the ring with no bell shape on the trim to allow it to cover the metal ring and draw it up to the ceiling. Just an amazingly dumb design of the plastic trim piece.

The light I was installing has screws that need to be put in from the sides, which doesn't work so well with this item because the medallion/rosette hangs down too far, very tough to get a screwdriver in sideways. Plus the medallion/rosette isn't sitting perfectly flush with the ceiling. One side is a little lower, and not an easy way to tighten it. Also the self boring screws are hard to get though the metal of the can. I wound up have to drill small pilot holes first.

The only issue with this product is that it is designed for a recessed fixture that has the socket attached to the housing. My socket was part of the reflector to is doesn't anchor as expected. The anchor metal penetrating screws are a bit of a challenge but small pilot holes or a very firm pressure gets the job done. In my case the fixture fits perfectly and one would never know that a recessed can was originally there.
