For this product, 18 lb. Fast Set 20 Lite Setting-Type Joint Compound, after it sets in 20 minutes, how long before I can paint it ??
Asked by: Bob
The purpose of setting type compound is so that multiple coats of mud can be applied in rapid succession. Thus, it is not necessary to wait for it to dry before applying the next coat of mud. HOWEVER for sanding and painting, one must still wait for it to be completely dry. The duration of which is wildly variable. 20 minutes is the setting time for this joint compound. That means it will become hard only, but not dry necessarily. This duration is UNRELATED to the drying time. Drying time is similar to any other joint compound, both setting type and premixed varieties, and it is dependent on the application thickness, the temperature and the humidity in the room applied. Very thin layers could be completely dry in under 45 minutes, thick applications (first coats usually) in unheated rooms can take days to dry out.

Are the "Fast Set" products water soluble after they have completely dried? I have always used the pre-mixed products that come in a bag in a box. I like that they can be easily cleaned up, even days later, with just a wet rag. They also come out of clothes in the laundry.

I did my own testing after I bought this product. It is water soluble after having cured completely, that is to say it will become soft again just like premixed joint compound.

When the material is dry enough so its sandable ...meaning when you sand the material with sandpaper and it creates dust, its ready for painting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for repairs Have used this product many times now for repairing dings, dents, and floating out seams before painting or texturing. Easier to work with and more user friendly if you thin it out a bit - gives you a better, smoother finish. One problem I've had and I've heard others mention is "craters" or air pockets forming when applying this product - this is partly due to the type of compound this is - a setting type compound that cures differently than your standard joint compound. What I've found that works is after you apply it, go back and check after 5 mins to see if any air pockets have formed - and if they have, go over it again with your taping knife to eliminate them. Other than that, its my go to product to repairing drywall!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 20 min mud sets up fast but don't expect to sand and prime in 20 minutes - you'll wait several hours depending on thickness, but still faster then 24 hr mud

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good Will not be ready to sand in 20. Depending on temp and air ventilation the warmer and lots of fresh air it fast but on a cool day you better have a fan on it
