I am trying to float over a poor patch job. Someone repaired a large hole in the wall and did poorly. I need to find the right product to re_float the wall and also to texture the walls after patch work. I will be using a hopper gun for texture. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I used this for texturing on my walls & ceilings in a garage. Not sure if it was the right product but it worked for my use and is holding up very well years later.

Answer:
This product will work for floating but can be stiff and more difficult to work. Once dry you may need to revisit the areas for cracking which can happen with any compound depending on thickness. There are better product that are premixed for texturing that you will find far more effective for your hopper setup.

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 6 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Sheet Rock brand performs better and is less expensive Normally I buy the Sheet Rock compound but my local Home Depot only had the Westpac Compound. I thought all these compounds would be the same so I bought the Westpac product. I was wrong and I thought I should share my experience. This product does not have a smooth consistency like the Sheet Rock product. Westpac compound is stiff and resists smooth application without considerable working of the product. This property adds significant time to application process and extra physical effort. Drying time is longer too. While the bucket looks larger than the Sheet Rock product, when I purchase the Sheet Rock product, from my community hardware store, I found there is actually more in the Sheet Rock container (and it was less expensive too!). If you want to dip and spread than use the Sheet Rock, If you want to work harder unnecessarily, and spend more money too, than use this Wespac product. June 26, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by prone to cracking while drying. The premixed stuff seemed to take more time to dry and was prone to cracking. February 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Taping Drywall to Artistic finish Finally applying my tape and final finish to my woodshop walls & ceiling. Chose this Westpac ready-mix product for ease of application after a trial run of the 1-gallon size. I have now applied over 25 gallons of this covering screw heads, taping and application of heavy artistic finsih to the walls & ceiling. My keys to success with this product is as follows: keep a lit on the can when not in use, remove only the amount from the 5-gallon bucket that I will apply in about a 5 minute time span, never put un-used product back in the bucket, use a small tape knife to remove product from the bucket (don't use that knife to apply with) and remember that it will shrink a small amount and mistakes can be sanded away! Be creative and go for a creative finish. Adheres well with minimal to no sag. October 11, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good value Great value for the price. Ready to go. dries quick June 24, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by You always use more than you think I used this both for patching and, watered down, to spray a knockdown texture. For the texture, I watered it down about 20% and a 5 gallon bucket seemed to cover about 120 linear feet (mostly 8 foot ceilings 5 windows) with a medium knockdown texture. When used for patching it does shrink quite a bit. If you want to make a flat wall, you'll need at least two coats and a little sanding. If you are just patching and aren't doing a large area, lightweight spackle might work better. If you are going to store it more than a day, use a trowel to flatten it out and pour a little water over the top. Then pour the water out when you go to re-use it. It will not mix with the compound and keep it from drying out. October 12, 2013
