Asked by: Hope
This also happened to my unit. I had to call Whirlpool repair and they sent a local company to fix it. My was still in warranty. Hopefully your's is also. One of the door switches went bad and I understand this is common.

Tom, Home Depot can install your microwave for a fee but doing it yourself is not that difficult. It comes with the wall brace and the wall pattern for you to follow. You will need another person to help out.

2.0 cu. ft. Over the Range Microwave in Stainless Steel with Sensor Cooking is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 2120.

We got it new inside our new house 21 months ago.... Unit kept telling us to Open/Close the door at random times, and last night just went completely dead, no lights, beeps, nothing. We're a middle-age couple with no kids, so the microwave has a pretty easy life in our house, yet it still couldn't make it even two years before dying. Called Whirlpool for service, they want almost twice the cost of a whole new microwave to fix this one. It is completely unsatisfactory and we will not be buying anything with the Whirlpool or Maytag label ever again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great when it works...Buyer Beware! We had this microwave for about 6 months when it started asking us to "Open/Close Door". We opened and closed the door, only to continue getting the same message. None of the other options worked. The microwave basically became a very expensive clock for the kitchen. So glad we purchased a protection plan for this product. Had to call and have it fix for this issue, 3 times. The last time they came to fix the problem, we were told this is a known problem and they had a fix for it. But we had to wait 4 weeks to get the "fix." Unfortunatley the fix only worked for a week. I highly recommend you look at a different microwave. The protection plan did relunctantly refund the purchase price for this item, but not before spending 90 + minutes on the phone with both Home Depot and the protection plan rep.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Frustrating problem! We loved the look and size of this microwave but now that we have it (and have had it a while) we are very frustrated with its performance. We repeatedly and randomly have a problem with is not operating and telling us we need to open/close the door. No matter how many times we do it, it doesn't help. Eventually (sometimes after dozens of tries) it will work. Just now getting around to researching online to see if others have this issue and I see that several do. Wish Whirlpool would issue a repair order for all those affected by this malfunction. Also? The vent fan is very, very loud even on the lowest setting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Like it a lot! I do love this microwave. The door opens and closes with ease, and there's lots of power. However, the digital readout is VERY difficult to see--it's blue on black, and it needs to be brightened up. I cannot see it from more than two feet away, and hence, the clock feature is now worthless. Also, the beeps are not very loud--please increase the sound level! Also, PLEASE add more directions about how to use all the features. The one page guide that comes with the microwave provides little detail. And when I tried to chat with a Whirlpool person, I was told to schedule a service call. POOR policy! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from 2.0 Microwave DOES NOT WORK WELL Microwave works when it wants to. Have had it 3.5 months and have had 3 service calls. Will not work with error message of "Open and Close Door". Also, Interior light will not come on, so unit will not work. After opening and closing door several times, I finally give up and leave door open. In about 20 minutes, interior light will come and unit will work. It's maddening. Control panel and several switches have been replaced - still has same problem. Repairman coming today again. Will see what he can do. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Avoid at all costs Just over a year the door started claiming it was not open, and the light would not come on. Now 4 Services later still doing it, Tech claims you just have to unplug it and plug it back in. Was designed to fail, and has. Certified Techs are untrained.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Died after only 2 years We've only had this microwave for right at 2 years. It started randomly playing the noise for the timer going off when there was nothing in it, or hadn't been in it for quite a bit of time. Make food, take it out when timer goes off or hitting cancel, an hour later, ding. Then we would put something in the microwave, set the timer, and it would tell us to open/close the door. After a couple of open/closes, it would finally work, or we would unplug it to reset it. I started noticing that when the light wouldn't come on inside after opening the door, it wouldn't work at all. I might be in the kitchen an hour or so later and open the door, and the light comes on. There just isn't any rhyme or reason to when it will work or not. We've tried unplugging to reset, no go. I really expect an appliance to last more than 2 years. We're going shopping for a new one today and it most certainly won't be a Whirlpool
