Customer Questions & Answers

The refrigerator generates ice every three hours. What happens to the ice if it's not used? Does the ice maker have to be hooked up?

Asked by: Dee
Diana, The ice maker does make ice every 3 hours, but there is a sensor. If the ice bucket is full, then the ice maker will not product ice until ice is taken out and below the sensor. The ice maker does not have to be hooked up in order for the refrigerator to function, but does have to be hooked up for ice production. how can I remove the plastic part in the tray of the freezer compartment so that the tray space is not divided?

I can not find the answer in the manual
Asked by: paul
I do not believe that the middle divider is meant to be removed. It is designed to be in the freezer to help with organization. Thank you for viewing this Whirlpool home appliance.

Customer Reviews

Gold 33 in. W 21.9 cu. ft. Bottom Freezer Refrigerator in White-DISCONTINUED is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1512.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Leaking water, frozen ice block below the freezer I'm very disappointed in the product quality and that Whirlpool would put this product on the market. It's an absolute nuisance to have to manually de-ice this unit every 7-10 days. I investigated the issue after seeing a puddle of water on my floor and an ice sheet below my freezer. I opened the back panel inside the refrigerator which is not easy to get to and noticed a leak coming from one of the pipes that had been taped and sealed, not soldered. The evaporated was partially frozen as well, so I took a hair-dryer to the line and evaporator as suggested. This procedure did not solve the problem. I can see from the other reviews that this is a very common problem with no solution being provided by Whirlpool. I'm stuck with monitoring the unit on a regular basis until I can replace the unit. I suspect that this may be the reason for my increased electrical usage and higher monthly bills. I will not buy another Whirlpool product as I can see this is not something they seem to be concerned about.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a good choice. Whirlpool...NEVER again. When I purchased this fridge, the repair guy was out twice for not getting cold enough. He even had to call the company to walk him through repairing it. Now 3 months after the warranty run out, the freezer is working and cold but the fridge is not cooling. It is at 55 to 60 degrees. After research, took the back off to find frozen pipe (as seen on many reviews). Thawed with dryer but at this point still not cooling. Will probably have to unload freezer and call repair man. Already has to throw away groceries from last nights grocery shopping, must pay repair bill.... Probably better to buy new fridge according to others reviews. Very disappointed. I liked the room, the bottom freezer, and style. But it's gonna be tough to replace food, repair, and/or buy new appliance. Definitely do NOT recommend whirlpool at this point.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not bad. We bought this unit used from a big box store and they said it was only a few months old. That was a lie because there was enough fur and hair on the coils to make a coat. We cleaned the coils and it has been 4 or 5 years now and have had no issues. My marital investment loves the unit. We maintain it yearly too. We just can't get the light cover off to change the bulbs, yet.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Same leaking water from freezer problem This fridge has been fine for over 5 years now but has started to leak water all over the floor and the bottom of the freezer is covered with ice. From all the other reviews it seems this is a problem that can't be solved. I'm pretty upset about this :(

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Warm fridge + frozen coils = junk This fridge has been a problem since it was about 3 or 4 years old. The frequency of manual defrosting has slowly increased over the years and now the fridge only stays cold a few days before it needs defrosted. Modern refrigerators should not need to be manually defrosted! Especially when they are only a few years old. It seems like there may be a flaw in quality or design as i am reading that a lot of consumers have had similar problems. If you do an internet search for problems on this model, you will find results for warm fridge, cold freezer. Should have paid extra for a GE. Beware of Whirlpool. Model # GB2SHDXTS01 S/N: KW0901319

Rated 1 out of 5 by from BEWARE Defrosting issue. Ice lays on the freezer floor. Once the bottom is filled with ice, the water then starts to drip on the floor. It's been defrosting in the freezer and ends up with a thick sheet of ice on the freezer floor. Cleaned it out every week and its back within days. Called a repairman, he said its very common on these fridges, the defrost drain line is tiny and frequently gets plugged up causing this problem. Went on line and found a video about how to DIY. Now I'm praying it doesn't happen again. This fridge is 3 years old. We've been dealing with this defrosting issue for 2 years. My last fridge worked for 20 years. I recommend staying away from the Whirlpool Gold bottom freezer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a wonderful surprise! We love this fridge! If you want the bottom line: Buy this fridge! It's beautifully engineered, fits in a small space, is quiet, energy efficient, and surprisingly spacious! We've owned this fridge for a month now and felt this was enough time/usage for a genuine review. The last week of 2011 our 17 year old side-by-side refrigerator just ran out of gas. Let's just say my wife and I were NOT in the market for a new fridge. So I reluctantly scrambled to look online to educate myself on prices, features, etc. The only features my wife and I decided were top priorities were 1- a bottom drawer freezer and 2- no external water/ice. We also wanted as little "high tech" stuff as possible as we've heard/read many stories of technology breaking easily and being very expensive to repair/replace. We were also constrained to a relatively small width due to existing counter top space. We began our search at Lowe's on a Saturday morning. By narrowing our choices to the bottom drawer freezer, this narrowed our selection to essentially about 4 refrigerators. One last minute decision was French Doors vs. Single Door on top. The French Doors look beautiful; however, we personally found the NOISE every time you open and close the door -because of the necessary middle pivoting hinge - was simply too much for us. This essentially got us to this Whirlpool model. The first thing we loved was the MODULAR SPLIT SHELVES in the top fridge area. I can testify that this is a GAME CHANGER. The ability to customize the split shelves is a fantastic design. Yet if you need to keep a sheet cake or large casserole in the fridge, you can quickly level both sides and have the space you need. Having the gallon jug of milk kept in the door and not gobbling up shelf space is also a super design. The top door closes VERY tightly - I guess this is part of the energy efficiency. If you simply "pull" on the handle, it will literally pull the entire unit toward you - on wheels. Instead, I've found that a simple "tug" on the door handle will break the seal and open the door. No big deal but worth mentioning. The freezer is very spacious and has a smaller top half sliding drawer to keep things organized. Ice maker/tub inside on the top left. What more do we need? Every fridge will have some noise when it's running. This one is relatively quiet. You'll hear the fan running from time to time but that's about it. Noise is no issue here. One final comment about energy efficiency. A while back I bought a little gadge called a "Kill-A-Watt" that measures how much energy an appliance uses. My old fridge was costing me about $175/year to run. Ouch. This fridge is rated to cost me about $45/year. That's over $10 A MONTH in genuine savings! After a month, we're still blown away by how spacious this fridge is! Never a side-by-side again. Our is black and the exterior cleans easily. If you're looking for a beautiful, functional, bottom drawer freezer with no extras to break on you, this is your fridge! Thanks Whirlpool for a well designed refrigerator.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ice sheet in the bottom of the freezer I'd been marginally happy with this fridge/feezer for 8 months. For the past 2 months I've been fighting with the defroster drain. It is clogged and when running leaks water into the freezer, and ultimately onto the floor. I've never been happy with the inability to easily remove the freezer drawers for cleaning, but no its a real problem as it makes it impossible to adequately clean the drain tube. This should be easy routine maintenance for an owner and not requiring a service call every year. Also looks like a common problem looking at the other reviews.
