Answer:
Diana,
The ice maker does make ice every 3 hours, but there is a sensor. If the ice bucket is full, then the ice maker will not product ice until ice is taken out and below the sensor. The ice maker does not have to be hooked up in order for the refrigerator to function, but does have to be hooked up for ice production. Answer:
The ice maker does not need to be hooked up. Raising the wire bail on the ice maker should shut off all operation of the ice maker. The installers (or you) simply don't install a water supply line.
If it is hooked up and the ice is not used, the ice maker stops making ice as the wire bail raises to shut off the ice maker. If the ice is not used for a very long time, it will slowly evaporate.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.3 out of 5 by 15 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor quality 1 year warranty, one month after warranty expires the condenser is junk. This is ridiculous that the fridge only lasted one year, fell apart, and a replacement condenser is over $700 and only has a 30 day warranty. Way to go Whirlpool on quality products. I absolutely loved the set up of the refrigerator but as I compare warranties of Whirlpool (1 year limited) and Kitchen Aid (up to ten years particularly the condenser and other sealed system components. I guess that's the difference between a company that backs their product and one that does not. October 16, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by worst piece of junk of a refrigerator! I am 60 year old and have never a refrigerator that break within 2 years. First the freezer leaks into the floor. Second, the top fridge on the left top shelves froze all my foods. Call the repairman 2 - 3 times. He clean it up and 3 months later same problem. Force me to buy insurance (big scam!), but what can do? Fridge kept on breaking with same problems. Finally, he told me that the manufactures install flimsy and temporary parts so it'll break quicker ergo, force you to buy another one with insurance, of course. October 16, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Extremely pleased! We just purchased this refrigerator to replace a 21-year old fridge. We absolutely love it! It is very roomy, and shelf placement is flexible. Both my husband and I noticed how quiet it is when running. It looks great, and is very easy to clean. We love the freezer on the bottom. We would definitely purchase it again. The delivery guys were great and even replaced our water line for the ice maker for free! June 3, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Ugh! Whirlpool quality and durability lacking Great features and good looking unit. To the many who have recommended this product, I wish them continued good luck. All of my appliances are Whirlpool and I too was happy for 1 year. Just after my 1 year warranty ran out, the freezer drain clogged causing a flood on the floor and thus damaging the floor. Check YouTube for the thousands of times this has happened with this unit. Fast forward one more year. Yes, a 2 year old frig has yet one more surprise for me. The sealed unit, i.e. what we used to know as coils is leaking. The estimated fix is hundreds of $$$ , if they can find the leak. The repair guy, a true expert we have used in the past said it was a total loss. Of course I could have bought the $300 warranty, yes that is 30% of the cost the refrigerator. My previous Whirlpool frig lasted 15 years without incident and carried a 5 year warranty. I guess if new homes aren't creating enough need for your products, you lower the warranty, lower the quality and have the consumer buy them more frequently. At this rate, I'll spend more money on my refrigerator than my automobiles. September 15, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Terrific Fridge - Huge inside! This is a terrific refrigerator! It holds so much more food than my old one, I have a couple shelves that are empty!! The bottom freezer is so nice, it keeps everything I want in the fridge at eye level. It is also much more quiet than my old fridge! I never hear it running, no knocking, no clicking! I should have bought this fridge 5 years ago!! May 15, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Junk Have had this refrigerator for approximately two years. The freezer leaks onto the floor and has actually ruined a hardwood floor. I have to chop the ice on the bottom of freezer daily in order to avoid the problem. No help at all from Whirlpool who stated that I could buy an extended warranty for over $300.00 or have unit serviced. Google it and you will see that this is a common problem and an obvious design flaw. Shameful. June 24, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by We like the product so far. Can't rate efficiency yet. Don't know. So far we really like our new fridge. It is very spacious and bright when we open the door. It is so nice not to bend down to look in the fridge for an item. We have never had an ice maker before and we are enjoying that aspect. It has been a great experience overall. May 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by NICE LOOKING ADDITION TO MY KITCHEN LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! FIRST TIME FREEZER ON THE BOTTOM PURCHASE AND IT IS WONDERFUL. IT HAS A GREAT ICEMAKER AND SO ROOMY. April 8, 2014
