Another reason is the manufacturer doesn't want the user to open the door during the spin cycle. It's dangerous. On a top loader, when one opens the lid, the tub stops spinning preventing injury. It's a safety mechanism. dCb Read Less

Anonymous,
The washer door does lock on the washer while the cycle is running. Every washer door has to lock while the cycle is running per a federal US regulation. However, you will have the option to pause the cycle and open the washer door as needed, then restart once the lid is closed. Thank you for viewing this Whirlpool home appliance.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Combination washer & dryer. Whirlpool. It's a great product, but I am disappointed that the washer only fills 1/2 way on a large load. It's a bigger washer, but I can't do larger loads. I don't believe it saves water in fact it probably uses more water by doing more loads to make up for having less water in the large load, which causes more use of electricity by doing more loads. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Its cheap and heres why ... ... Washer only barely half fills up. Don't fill this washer full of clothes to the top because due to new, I assume, govt. requirements to save water this machine will not fill all the way and therefore does a fair job at best of washing clothes along with a "slow speed" rinse and again, half fill. Hot water mixes with cold, again due to energy star requirements so you will not get a traditional hot water wash. The washer is very loud during operation and has little capacity, especially if you want the clothes to come clean then you would only have to fill the tub half full of clothes and therefore do many, many loads, hence there goes the point of saving any water or time. Waste of money. November 7, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Mostly happy with purchase I'm mostly happy with this washer and dryer. It cleans well and has all the options I need, But it sure is loud! I've read many reviews and a couple tips I read have helped me be happier, first if you leave the fabric softener dial on yes always, whether or not you use it, it will fill fuller for the rinse cycle. And second, I almost always use the delicate cycle to wash, it seems to agitate enough to clean your clothes, but is quieter than the normal or heavy duty cycles. The spin cycle also works really good, clothes come out of washer dryer than my old washer, so it takes less time to dry. Over all I'm happy, again, I just wish it wasn't so loud. May 12, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Pleased Purchased to replace a 20 year old Magic Chef unitized washer/dryer that was much smaller. This one is larger and just does fit in the closet area of our condo. The fact that it has dual side access for the lint exhaust and water hoses really sold me on this unit. It would not have fit had it not included this feature. Few other unitized products offer it. I have seen comments about noisy motor and cleaning performance and can say that neither of these has been a problem. It is not whisper quiet, but not overly loud. Clothes come out very clean. Dryer has a large drum and dries clothes within an acceptable time frame. Try it and you'll like it. May 29, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product! After reviewing our stack washer/dryer options we decided to purchase the Whirlpool unit for both quality and cost. Now that we've had some time using this product I'm very happy that we made this choice. Provides a large washer capacity, cleans the laundry better then we had expected and the drying cycle is quiet and speedy. All in all a great buy! October 26, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Tired of babysitting this machine. I happen to agree w/Pat from Portland Or. Pat you hit the nail on the head. This washer is garbage. I have the same problem as you. And I too add extra water. Right now as I am writing this I have sheets washing but one at a time. Please fix this problem. I would love a refund on my money. I am tired of having to babysit this machine.I am as busy as everyone else. Oh and 1 more thing. There isn't a gentle cycle. Just Reg. and Heavy. I wouldn't even give this a star...I was forced to. September 24, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Noisey, but getting better. The delivery guys didn't level anything, in fact, they didn't bring a level with them. For the last two weeks I have attempted to level the machine. Prior to this it sounded like a 747 about to crash. Most recently the machine seems to be making less noise, that is until the brake kicks in to stop the machine from spinning. Then the buzzer goes off to let you know it has finished. This sounds very similar to my buildings emergency siren, so I quickly try to get everything together before making a dash to the stairway. It cleans well and seems to dry faster than the old one. So, far I think that I am getting it under control. I only wonder what the neighbors have heard. February 10, 2015
