Another reason is the manufacturer doesn't want the user to open the door during the spin cycle. It's dangerous. On a top loader, when one opens the lid, the tub stops spinning preventing injury. It's a safety mechanism. dCb Read Less

Anonymous,
The washer door does lock on the washer while the cycle is running. Every washer door has to lock while the cycle is running per a federal US regulation. However, you will have the option to pause the cycle and open the washer door as needed, then restart once the lid is closed. Thank you for viewing this Whirlpool home appliance.

Thin Twin 2.5 cu. ft. Washer and 5.9 cu. ft. Electric Dryer in White is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 176.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from I would not recommend this product I previously owned the same combo model for 17 years so when it started to have problems instead of having them fixed I purchased the same unit because it was a great unit. Now I wish I had my old unit back. This is a cheaply made, loud version of the old one. The "water saver" device only makes me do double the amount of loads because the water levels are so low. I even had a repair man come out and he said he got a little more water to come in it. Sometimes I have to rinse the load twice. Now I am stuck with a unit I hate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Worth the Wait! I decided on this product because it fit the dimensions of where I wanted to place the unit and I really wanted a stackable. It replaced two units, a washer and dryer, from the early 1990s [not Whirlpool brand]. Reading some of these reviews made me nervous. But, since my mother-in-law had a stackable from Whirlpool for a dozen years and still likes it, I decided it would be worth it. It took me a YEAR to save up the cash for it. (Part of this money was saved by drying clothes on the line during the summer months!). I have had the stackable for six months now and can report I am very happy with it. For starters it uses less water and electricity than the old units and frees up space in our house. We have concrete floors and sound is not a problem. In fact, it is not as noisy as the old units (which, in fairness, were at the end of their lifecycle and very noisy). The one adjustment I had to make was getting used to slightly smaller wash loads. That's okay. The added floorspace it worth it. We still prefer to dry our clothes on the line for environmental (& frugality) reasons but this has nothing to do with performance. On that note, it also cleans well if you make your own detergent! I am very pleased with the purchase. It was worth the wait!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It fits our space and our needs perfectly. We have had our combination laundry unit over 4 months and it meets our needs perfectly. The saved space is great, allowing for a utility rack next to it. I appreciate the pre-wash feature, but do wish the water level was higher for the large load (it only fills 2/3rds of the tub), although I know that this is an energy saving feature. The dryer does a wonderful job and I can remove items, hang them with no need for ironing, on a number of different settings. As long as they don't sit for hours when the dry cycle is finished. It is just off the kitchen and the sound level is not an issue at all, for either washer or dryer. It was a very good value for us, especially as we only do 3-5 loads of wash each week. Great product for people who are down sizing or have limited laundry space.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Its cheap and heres why ... ... Washer only barely half fills up. Don't fill this washer full of clothes to the top because due to new, I assume, govt. requirements to save water this machine will not fill all the way and therefore does a fair job at best of washing clothes along with a "slow speed" rinse and again, half fill. Hot water mixes with cold, again due to energy star requirements so you will not get a traditional hot water wash. The washer is very loud during operation and has little capacity, especially if you want the clothes to come clean then you would only have to fill the tub half full of clothes and therefore do many, many loads, hence there goes the point of saving any water or time. Waste of money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is very reliable. We live in an older home and do not have the room for a side-by-side washer and drier. About twenty-five years ago we purchased a Whirlpool stacking washer and drier. The quality of that washer/drier was so excellent that when it was time for a new washer/drier, we purchased another Whirlpool stacking washer/drier and we are very pleased with our purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Combination washer & dryer. Whirlpool. It's a great product, but I am disappointed that the washer only fills 1/2 way on a large load. It's a bigger washer, but I can't do larger loads. I don't believe it saves water in fact it probably uses more water by doing more loads to make up for having less water in the large load, which causes more use of electricity by doing more loads.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Have had it only a few weeks I bought this stackable combo because I had the same exact one for the precious 18 years and it was a great washer / dryer! I finally had to get a new one because the old one was rusting out - but still running. I hope I have the same luck with the new one. It's compact and efficient but not large enough to wash a comforter in.
