Answer:
I changed my old mercury thermostat that controls my gas steam furnace and had 2 wires coming out of the wall with no tags on them and both were of the older type of wires. One wire has a very faint orange tiny stripes so I connected that to R and the other wire that had no indications at all to W. That worked perfectly.

I also had two wires and it did work for me. In my case the wire receptacles on the old thermostat were labeled and the White Rodgers has you label each wire based on that. If your old thermostat wire receptacles are labeled, you should be all set - their chart seems to have every possible combination. Hope that helps. Read Less

Yes, you have to touch a button to turn it on which is only for a limited time. The screen can easily be seen without the back light during the day and is totally dark at night.

White Rodgers gives you a chart in the instructions, along with a set of labels for the wires. You label the wires according to the chart and then connect them accordingly. I do see all of the letters you listed on the chart. Hope that helps.

UP300 7-Day Universal Programmable Thermostat with Home/Sleep/Away Presets is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 49.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Doesn't get much better than this Ten years ago I changed our very old gas furnace for a new single steam heating one but didn’t get around to changing the old `Part Choice` thermostat as I was convinced by the installer that it would suite my needs better than some of the new ones available. But ten years later it was getting very grubby and taking the cover off I could see a ton of cobwebs in and around the coiled spring. Time for an upgrade. There were only two wires that came out of the wall and neither was labeled or indeed there were no marking whatsoever. Then I noticed a very faded red stripe mark on one of the wires. Connected that to R and the other to W, put the cover back on, turned the power back on to the furnace and all was good. Very easy to program following the excellent supplied instructions. All settings can be customized to suite your own preference including a useful copy and paste. After setting up the program to my preference, I then turned the programing off just to see if the settings would still be available and then turned the programming back on and was happy to see that all my settings were still logged in. So what do I like about this thermostat? Easy to set up. Excellent manual. Large illuminated information on the screen. Hidden side door (to make or change the settings). Home, away and sleep modes. The as is now on screen temperature plus the temp that is required and the easy way to change preferred temperature. Easy change of batteries. Very well designed and extremely user friendly. Excellent customer care.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Big Display Screen This Thermostat has a good size display screen, which is why I wanted to use it at my elder mother's home. It was a bit tricky to install, but the phone number to customer service came in very handy. They were helpful and knowledgeable. The instructions are very clear how to program (though a little confusing at first),and the copying feature makes it pretty easy to complete the 7-day schedule. I also like the hold feature that allows me to increase or decrease temperatures for a period of time. This is a good, simple digital thermostat, but for me the most important feature is the display screen and that is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great I absolutely love this thermostat. The installation directions are easy to follow as are the programming instructions. This thermostat has a cut and paste button so you can easily program multiple days. The large and bright display makes this very easy to operate. There are also favorite buttons on the front that make this a very convenient and user friendly thermostat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to read display, easy to program Got this as a replacement. Installation is straight forward. It even includes jumpers for those that have heat pumps. Mounting holes lined up perfectly with previous holes. Once installed, programming was easy with a cut and paste feature. Once I had Monday programmed, copied and auto populated thru Friday. Nice big buttons, with a cover plate to hide all but the basic buttons. Also, has a short profile and sticks out from the wall less then the old one; maybe inch and half.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Thermostat This is a very nice thermostat once you get it installed and learn to use it. Getting the unit wired correctly was a bit of a challenge because of all the different thermostat wires on my mother's old house that were not color coded exactly as they should be but this is not the new thermostat's flaw. The programing is easy once I learned it but I can see how an older person who is not up to speed on technology may have a problem but it is pretty user friendly if you follow the directions on the display. It is very convenient that I can program my mom's heat and air to come on according to her schedule and the large back-lit display is easy to see.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bright, easy to read, easy to use thermostat I just installed this last night. It literally took me all of about 10 mins. I wanted a different thermostat because in order to read our old one I had to turn on a spotlight and get out a magnifying glass to read things like the presets or the temperature. That is no longer the case. With this I can clearly read all the pertinent information without having to squint or fire up the stadium lights. The actual temperature is displayed at a whopping 1"x1". This may not sound like much but it is quite large for an electronic display. The other information, time, current temp setting, is easily read as well. If the lights are off all I have to do is hit any of the buttons and it lights up like a Christmas tree. It cones with all the necessary hardware and instructions for an easy set up. It is fully customizable to program any way you see fit. The three "short cut" buttons may come in handy once I have done all the programming. It seems to be pretty user friendly as far as the programming goes. I will no longer have to deal with not being able to read my thermostat while stumbling around at 4 in the morning on my way out the door

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Installation and programming The UP300 is a nice programmable thermostat with a big, back-lit display that makes for easy viewing. It appears to support a very large variety of heating and air conditioning systems and is easy to install and program. Installation: I replaced a Honeywell programmable thermostat. I completed the swap-out in less than 15 minutes, just using a screw driver. It was as simple as taking down the Honeywell, noting the letter code that each wire went to on the Honeywell, and then hooking the wires to the exact same letter codes on the new one. Programming: Programming was as easy as installing. The buttons for programming are hidden behind a flip door, which gives the thermostat a clean look. The manual was helpful, but I could have done it with the help of the manual. Overall a good unit, even though it doesn't have a touch screen, which one can already get for a similar price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent propduct I had this installed by my technician during the bi-annual maintenance visit. it was a breeze but more importantly is a definite upgrade to my earlier Honeywell digital display. Firstly the display is big, it has schedules witth easy features like copy past and most important supports two stage heating.
