Customer Questions & Answers

Can this unit be exhaused through holes in the wall?

Asked by: Carpentersdaughter
Coming from an A/C professional, the discharge air is going to be much cooler than that of a dryer, and will not in any way pose a fire hazard during normal operation. The only hazard would come in a very rare situation where the unit itself catches fire with the fan continuing to run, expelling flames/hot air through the discharge hose. I would not worry about it for temporary/periodic use, but if this will be a permanent fixture then some fire-proofing may be appropriate

PLEASE: what is the minimum window width for this unit?

My window is only 24" wide.
Asked by: locosam
The fixed window plate is 20", so you should be able to fit it without issue. You'd just need to trim the sliding side plates to take up the small gap that remains; just use one sliding panel and it would be fine.

what is the minimum width of the window that the kit fits?

Asked by: sandi
20" with the original fixed vent plate, but it's just plastic, so you could trim it further down to 15" if necessary.

I like this unit because it has dual purpose functions for both cooling and heating (be aware that it's a heat pump, which transfers heat energy from one side to the other, so for heating, it won't work as well when it's below about 40 degrees, because there's just not enough heat energy to pump when it's cold outside). When set for cooling the temperature swing goes about 2 degrees above the desired setpoint before it kicks on, and it cools until about 1 degree below the setting before it turns off the compressor and ramps down the fan speed. The fan is running continually to continue the cooling from the evaporator after the compressor turns off, so you'll notice the decrease in the sound level from the compressor and fan, but it won't go completely off. It's not the quietest unit when running, so if that's important to you, keep it in mind when deciding. I don't mind it as the sound is fairly consistent, with no rattles or disturbing mechanical sounds; it's more like white noise. The low fan operation as it extracts the remaining heat doesn't draw much power, less than a light bulb, so it's not bad in that regard. Normally, when using the unit in heating or cooling mode, the temperature reading of the room is not displayed, only the setpoint, but if you want to have it show the actual temperature rather than the setting, you just need to press the mode button four times in succession. Then the display will show the actual temperature. Other than the heating and cooling modes, it also has a fan only and a dehumidifier mode, but I don't use it for that purpose. The fan is not easily directed where I'd want for use in fan only mode, but instead blows upward, so I'd just get a regular fan for that. The dehumidifier mode uses the same energy with the compressor running, so if I use it I may as well get some cooling benefit from it and run it in cooling mode. Some reconfiguration of the hoses is necessary for the different modes, and the connectors are a bit tough to slip on and off. When unlatching the retaining clips, just rotate the hose to unclip it rather than try to poke it free. The drain is very low on the unit, which isn't ideal if you want to have it drain into a small pan or receptacle. It would have to be elevated to allow for that. It would have been a nicer design if they provided a small stand to place the unit on, and allow a hose to be connected for a direct drain, so it wouldn't have to be manually drained periodically. Installation involves sizing up the vent panel into the window, sealing air gaps with tape or foam depending on how well you want it to be sealed, and closing the window on it. The 5" hose intake and exhaust holes are only 7-1/2" apart, which is not that great in terms of efficiency because it allows them to mix, but I guess they decided to do that to make it useable by people with very narrow windows, and trade off efficiency. Be sure not to throw out the extra sliding panel pieces if you cut them up for narrow windows, because if you want to relocate it later on to a wider window, you'll need them, and they will only sell those panels to you at a cost, and they're not cheap. It was so expensive for simple plastic pieces that I was looking to fashion a slider out of some other material when I went to reinstall in a wider window, but luckily they turned up again. The white control buttons on the front panel are not very legible with a white on white raised symbol scheme, so printing out a larger function reference and affixing it to the front would be handy so you don't have to look that closely when trying to remember which button controls what. Going into my second year with it using both heating and cooling functions, and so far so good, but I got an extended warranty through Square Trade just in case it goes south. The company does not cover shipping on the warranty past an initial period, so that could be problematic if it were necessary to have it sent back for repair. It's not a small unit, probably in between Robby the Robot and R2D2, but has wheels to move around when necessary. All in all, it's pretty versatile, and for mild heating where it's not below freezing outside, it is much more efficient than any electric heater, because it's transferring heat rather than using electricity to create the heat energy. It's able to heat up a room far quicker at probably about 800W than an electric heater running 1800W.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Unit Works great for cooling! Cools down my 700sqft TV room quickly. Noise level is better than most. Installation is pretty much a snap, I did have to trim the window sliders to fit the narrow window I installed the unit in, but that is something I expected. A good sharp utility knife worked well..I haven't had the unit long enough to use the heater yet, so I can't comment on that area. Does kind of look like a mini fridge though, to bad there's no place to put beer in it! That would almost make it perfect for me! Oh and it's not as big as I though it would be. I like the fact that as It cools down the room the fan speed drops along with the temp making the noise level drop as well. I'd buy another if I needed it. Longevity of the unit is something that remains to be seen. Came well very well packed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great unit Our third floor in our townhouse was so uncomfortably hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Heat and cool works great. It's not very loud. I read several reviews and this one seemed to get the best overall with the fewest amount of complaints. Install was a snap, in fact my 20 y/o daughter set it up in her room by herself if that gives you any indication of how easy it is. The exhaust fitter unit is great. I can't comment on the dehumidifier as we haven't had a need to use that yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for my application I purchased this unit to convert my garage into an embroidery studio. The unit easily vented through the garage door and disconnects if and when I need to open the door. It cooled the space down in about 10-15 minutes when the front of the garage was in the direct late afternoon sun. Its no more noisy than a regular AC window unit when it is on full fan. The lower fan setting is hardly noticeable. Haven't had to use the heat function yet but I am encouraged that it will be equally as efficient. I am thrilled with it so far.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cools very well, would recommend Not perfect, but definitely a keeper. This Whynter air conditioner is by far one of the better air conditioners I've used over the last 10 years. We no longer use central air except when there are guests. Spot coolers like this save a considerable amount of energy. It's bigger than a window air conditioner but portables are by far easier products to use. Don't try carrying this by yourself, it's easily over 50lbs. Not sure how BTUs are work but this does better than assumed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very nice unit I bought this unit to keep my garage at a reasonable temperature (89) in the summer and to be a backup in case something goes wrong with my house AC. As luck would have it, my home AC went out a week after I received this. I was able to cool down my bedroom very nicely with this unit so I could at least sleep comfortably. My only complaint is that it doesn't remove much humidity, but that seems to be the case with all portable or window units I have used. The unit is also very quiet. If you have a brick home or a home where you actually have a window sill the majority of portable AC units WILL NOT work for you since most use a round to oval adapter for the exhaust plate in your window. This design is never done properly, you can't insert the adapter in the window plate because it hits the sill. This unit is one of the few that has a round intake/exhaust vents so it works as it should. Install was a breeze, the pieces fit together perfectly and to get a solid seal on the window/frame I just used self-adhesive foam strips (Home Depot carries this in the door hardware isle). Easily removed and any residue will be in the window track, not all over the frame like the suggested duct-tape. I have a feeling that most complaints about this unit relate to them not leaving the unit upright for 24 hours after receiving it. You MUST do this if you want the unit to last, it is very important. I am only giving it 4 stars because I have used it for such a short time period (2 weeks), I have no complaints so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It cools the house wonderfully. I recently bought new windows and we didn't want a window unit to damage them in any way so we looked for a portable air conditioner. At first we bought a Soleus Air Conditioner/Heater 13,000 BTU and it did not even cool our living room. So, I researched other portable air conditioners and found that reviews reflected that dual hoses work better for cooling then the single hose units. I found Whynter and read all the reviews I found on it and it sounded like a great deal with a great air conditioner. It is. It has cooled my living room, kitchen, even hallway, and bathroom which the window unit did not. I would recommend this highly. The only negative is that it look like a tiny refrigerator in my living room. The hoses are a bit bulky. And the vent on the top of the machine does not have valves to slide left to right or oscillate. Other then that and as people said on other reviews the instructions and remote are not obvious as others are. But, overall I would highly recommend it for its cooling capacity. I don't know about the heating yet....I plan to use it for my sunroom in the winter.
