Answer:
Whynter says it must sit flat. Also, it I move mine slightly on the carpeted floor, it will get very loud until I nudge it back to where it was or another spot it finds comfortable. It seems to be very sensitive.

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 11 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just what I was looking.! The kitchen window over the sink was the only one I could use for the exhaust tubing. I needed a small unit that I could put on my kitchen counter & under the cabinets by the sink. This baby fits perfectly. So far this unit has cooled off my 3 room apartment , even on the most humid days. It makes no more noise then a regular window a/c. I am very pleased with it. There is one problem. You have to drain the access water that accumlates ever so often, to do so you have to remove a drain plug which is in the back at the very bottom of the unit and hard to get at. I solved this problem with 3 feet of half inch wide tubing and a clamp. I attached the tubing to where the water drains out and ran it to the sink. The water drains automatically into the sink now. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Product if you are in need of the innovative features As my summary stated, this is a good product in that it is mobile, does not totally consume your viewing from the window, and not too expensive. I will add if you are not looking for the above features; namely the mobile nature of the unit I would go with a traditional window unit. It takes up a rather large amount of space and must be 12-18 inches away from the window/wall (by design). One could easily buy the same BTUs in a window unit version for a quarter of the price. It is a bit noisy but no louder than a window unit. The unit needs to be drained every so often (every 2 weeks) or the unit will shut off. It seems to be mechanically sound; however, this is only after one summer season. August 24, 2011
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Worked great - for 4 1/2 years! Great small size and very powerful cooling. Kept the living room chilly and even cooled off the adjoining 2 bedrooms. Only occasionally needed draining of internal condensation. UNTILL it was 4 1/2 years old. Then the air wasn't as cool and it began shutting off every 30-45 minutes requiring to be drained each time. (And it's a chore to drain.) I have contacted Whynter. October 5, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product really cools down a room! We love the compact size, the quick ability to cool down a hot room, and ease of use. Hubby especially loves the remote. However, the only issue I would have is the drainage hole. Its a bit hard to get to, but this is a minor issue compared to the great benefits of this air conditioner. I highly recommend it. We've had other portable AC units, and they never cooled a room like this one does! And its so easy! June 12, 2011
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by This machine has been a lifesaver! A couple of months ago, I moved to a new apartment. Unfortunately, my still-perfectly-good window air conditioner would not fit any of the windows in the new place. I had the option of buying a wall unit, but that would have involved not only measuring to make sure it would fit but hiring professionals to install it. Instead, I chose to buy a portable unit. My new apartment is a studio, and this machine, at 13,000 btu's, cools it very well. We have had some pretty hot days since I got it, and my place has been very comfortable. The only things I don't like are: (1) It takes up some floor space, and, in a studio apartment, space is at a premium. This is a minor inconvenience, though, when you consider the comfort it gives. (2) Using it with the remote control can be complicated, and I have not yet had the patience to sit and figure it out. All in all, though, I really like my new air conditioner. June 25, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Compact design and window kit are good but performance is poor The remote is not user friendly and the unit was never able to cool my living room. April 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product is small but packs a punch! This little air conditioner is exactly what we were looking for. It fits perfectly in the room (out of the way) and really cools the area well. During our 100+ degree weather it was a refreshing 72 degrees in the room. Great product...I recommend it to anyone. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Too loud Before buying this unit, I had read on another site that the noise was in the upper forties in decibels. NOT. I would say it is nearer to the eighties. The fan noise completely masks the sound of the copmpressor. I have to feel the coolness of the air at the louvers and feel the exhaust for heat to assure it is runninig. There is only marginal difference of sound when fan speed changes fro low to medium to high. I have a 3 year old 10000 btu Sharp portable AC that is rated at 38 decibles and the sound is less than half of this unit even at high speed. Fortunetly, the unit is in another room, if it was in an occupied room it would be unbearable. Recently, at startup, a consistent noise results as though some rotating object is touching something else. The rate of the tic-a-tic noise does not change with fan speed, so I guess that means the compressor is the source of the noise, I haven't decided if should return the unit to the store.
