Customer Questions & Answers

How quiet it's this ac ???

Asked by: Manuel
If loud, obnoxious noise bothers you when you try to sleep, then this is not for you. I bought this when faced with central air that died suddenly and it's an unfortunate necessity. It's so noisy that I will turn it off even on a hot night just to get some peace and quiet. If you've even spent a Saturday night out clubbing and then stepped outdoors for a moment and were shocked by the quiet, then you'll appreciate the feeling when this doesn't have to run. I am dreading the summer days ahead. It is, however, better than nothing. (I also don't understand the 14,000 BTU rating. The 14,000 BTU should be enough to cool my bedroom with ease. It just does not cool it but a little bit. Still, it's better than nothing.

Is the filter washable or must additional filters be purchased?

Asked by: JustWondering
The air filter is washable, however it has an additional "charcoal filter" that needs to be replaced not washed as far as I know.

How does this unit vent? If I don't have a window do I need to cut a hole to the outside?

Asked by: MACD
Yes you need to have two 5" diameter holes cut to the outside one for intake and one for exhaust (hot air). If you have a window you only need to se the supplied adapter for the venting.

Customer Reviews

14,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Dehumidifer and Remote is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 105.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from It solved my problem... There is a room in my house that was impossible to keep cool. Putting this portable AC unit in there solved the problem. The AC was ready to go, the kit to position the exhaust and intake in a window was a bit tricky, but it was doable after I figured out I needed duct-work tape (hot/cold). I took advice from other review sites and insulated the exhaust air duct, which makes the room cooler still. The person who sleeps in that room says it is 100% improvement. My problem is solved. I will be watching the electric bill to see if I have traded one problem for another ....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Killer AC ... Blows Arctic air ... So far, so good ... My contractor installed this portable air conditioner in one of my apartment buildings this morning. The complete installation through a stucco wall took two hours. I turned it on and it immediately blew freezing cold air out of the top vent. There is significant air movement, even when the fan is set at the lowest speed setting. The unit is quiet and not intrusive at the low fan speed setting. I could easily sleep with this unit running at night. I plan on installing this unit in all of the bedrooms in my apartment building. I purchased this unit for $480.00 from Home Depot one month ago. Home Depot is now charging $625.00 for the same unit. That should tell you something.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This unit works GREAT! This unit works GREAT! I live on the second floor of a old building. In the summer the apartment is HOT. And in the winter it's COLD. I was a little leary of this product but I looked up the top portable air conditioners and the Whynter 14000 btu was within the top 5. It works great and it does take the humidity out of my apartment. This summer here in Chicago has been very hot and humid and rhis unit does the job. I ordered this unit through the online of Home Depot stores and the price was similar with other stores. I give the delivery from Home Depot an A++. I order the unit on a Tuesday nite and the unit was delivered on Friday morning of the same week. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with this units performance/style First off, do your homework/research and learn about the differences between a single hose unit and a dual hose unit. With that said, this dual hose unit performs beautifully. Cools the area in my Living room/Kitchen (roughly 400 sq ft. with ease. Like everyone else, we've been hammered by rising energy prices while trying to maintain a reasonable level of comfort. This unit does the trick for us while using considerably less electricity than our main unit. This puppy can pull 11 Amps, so make sure you put it on an isolated circuit. As far as Portable Cooling AC's go, it will be hard to find a unit that out performs this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally feel cool Have had this unit for a month now and it has run flawless since the day I plugged it in. It was a good investment on our part. I have had other stand up A/C units and this is the best so far.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as expected Have this setup in a 12x14 bedroom. This is a large unit, and extra space is required for the hoses too. The unit pumps out plenty of cooling and can chill the room on a 90 degree day. Quite noisy though. Much louder than a box fan running on the high setting. Note that although this is a dual hose system, it still has a vent in the rear and still pulls in air from the room, enough to open the door if not closed completely.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very nice Air Conditioner This air conditioner performs well. Last year I purchased another brand a/c identical in it's specifications and performance but that well known brand performed poorly in comparison to this unit. The main problem with the other air conditioner was that it was very noisy and it's cooling ability dropped off over time. I contacted Customer Service with the "noise" problem and was told that "if the problem didn't affect the devices performance they could not send a Service Tech". So I sold it. This Whynter 14000 btu system performs well. It cools my entire 500 sq. ft. area quickly and is quiet and the installation was very easy. To be honest the quality and design could stand a little upgrading but overall this is a very nice system for the money.
