Answer:
My unit runs as needed. I've heard the fan running (quietly) and then shut off. So, I'd say, yes.

Answer:
No. The fan has to run continually in order to sense or detect the humidity in the air. The compressor shuts of automatically and restarts once the air becomes humid again.

This unit is VERY quiet. Not sure what the Db is, but it makes less noise than any other unit we've had. Ours is in the basement, so noise level isn't a huge issue for us.

I can certainly relate to the need to add solutions to a humidifier, but never to a dehumidifier. But, to answer the question: No. However, after years of service, if you use the internal container versus a drain to the outside, you may want to bleach out the mildew that will eventually form inside the container. We use our dehumidifier in a 600 square foot basement room. We have an external drain line, and it works great. Just set and adjust the humidity level as needed and then leave it alone. Read Less

I guess it would depend upon the sump pump features. However, it can certainly drain into a sump pump hole. I have mind connected to a gravity drain line that goes outside into a flower bed.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 77 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quiet and effective Purchased this unit for installation in the basement. It is not a wet environment, but does become humid in the warmer months. The prior unit that we owned (not the same brand) was very noisy and did not extract sufficient moisture, This unit is much quieter and does have to be emptied twice a day. The overall construction is more pleasing than a standard unit. I am somewhat concerned that the color (white) will dull over time. I will install and try the pump/external drain feature when I get some time. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by DEHUMIDIFIER WITH BUILT-IN PUMP The dehumidifier was easy to assemble and so far has worked as advertised we hope that it provides us many years of service. We have a 1000 sq. ft. basement which had about 70 percent humidify when we purchased your product since then the humidify has been steady at 45 percent. July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product This was purchased to replace a 7 yr old dehumidifier in our basement. Price was great, energy star a plus, but the best part is the internal pump! No fussing with a hose to make sure it's draining. Terrific!! July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Extremely happy I use the dehumidifier in the basement. It's working perfectly. I connected the water pump hose easily and drained it to the laundry sink. The unit turns off automatically when the set RH% is reached. My only regret is that I didn't know about this model years earlier. June 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Product Took it out of the box, assembled what had to be assembled, plugged it in and turned it on and it's working as expected. Great product. June 28, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Fooled by 4 to 5 star rating I made a decision to buy this product based on the star rating. Never heard of a Whynter dehumidifier but due to the great reviews I pulled the trigger. It worked less than 24 hours when the dreaded EC shows up on the display. The book says this code is due to the unit being operated outside of operating temps (60 degrees was well within the limits) or the unit has a major malfunction. To reset the code the unit has to be unplugged but after four attempts EC came back. It was a good thing I saved the shipping box because HD got it back. Called Whynter Customer Service on a Saturday morning, left voicemail, got a return call Monday morning. Nice but told me the same thing the instruction/troubleshooting manual said to do. No more Winter products for me. May 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Good Dehumidifier Pump is much quieter than Hisense model I had last year which died after one season. Easy to use, works quickly. June 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great I was a bit nervous about buying this after reading other reveiws about how the pump wouldnt drain the bucket. But after reading instructions i had to laugh at the stupidity of that poster who was whining abou having to return it three times and still not getting it to work. It is not suppossed to drain the bucket. It pumps water a little at a time as it collects ititamd it does that very well. I have already recomended it to my neighbor for his basement, and he is happy with it as well. May 11, 2016
