Dual hose

Does this unit require two holes through the walls for venting and intake?

I have one exterior vent already cut in the wall and I definitely plan to use that to vent the exhaust. Unfortunately, I don't have an intake on the exterior of the building. What I do have an opening to the crawl space... The crawlspace air temperature is usually a little lower than exterior temperature and under normal conditions there's very little moisture down there. Can I use that as my "input exhaust"?
Asked by: Thor
I'd give it a try for a week especially if you don't need an extension to connect to the crawlspace. Any longer intake or exhaust path could reduce the efficiency.

Eco-Friendly 13,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner with Dehumidifier is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 22.

Other than having to cut the longer ABS board to size (the smaller one was too short), installation was a breeze. The dual hoses really makes a difference and power consumption has not made a significant dent in our energy bill. Noise levels are low and you can turn off the blue LEDs that would be otherwise too bright in a bedroom.

We purchased 2 units, one to cool the computer server (hoping to also cool other rooms in that area), and another to cool a waiting room (and hopefully other rooms in the area). The units cooled their respective designated space, however they do not do much to cool around corners, or multiple rooms - think of them as free standing window units. An insulation sleeve for the exhaust hose is definitely recommended. The timer can be set for the unit to turn itself off, or it can be set to turn itself on. However (unless I missed something in the instructions), it cannot be set in tandem to turn itself off and turn itself on sequentially.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It does the job and then some- I bought this unit for my upstairs studio in Menlo Park, CA. The studio was built in the 50's and had no ventilation. I am very pleased with this unit as it works to cool down nearly 600 sq.ft. It was a deal and I researched a lot of similar units. I would buy it again...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Poorly Designed Controls Installation is straight forward but had to trim the window fixture, not a big deal. Does not need to be drained often due to "fan mode" evaporating most of the water through the exhaust. But it has several serious flaws: 1st, it does not go into power saving mode, will never shut off on it's own. 2nd, the remote needs to taken out and pointed at the unit to pick up signal, does not have physical buttons on the unit itself. 3rd, confusing functions which have symbols and not actually labelled. 4th, when set to auto mode, for some reason it doesn't let you set the temperature... Kinda defeats the point of having an AC?? Overall, it's a great double hose unit, but I would recommend getting an AC with physical buttons. Side note: At no point does the air outside come into your house. The intake only cools the compressor while the exhaust blows out heated air cause by heat exchange. This does not create a positive air flow, but rather not a negative airflow like single hose units do. Dual hose units are FAR SUPERIOR to single hose units due to this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much more efficient than our old portable units and quieter too! Having used portable air conditioners for many years now felt it was time to upgrade. Not just because they were getting old but wanted something more efficient, less electricity and a bit more cooling power. After doing much research finally settled on this unit. Wanted to try it first so we only got the one to begin with. The unit itself was simple to put together, really the only thing to deal with of note the window slider piece and the two hoses. I didn’t need any instructions especially having owned this type of air conditioner. In fact I put my boy, 12 to the task and had it up and running cold air in just 15 minutes. We have it placed in the TV/Rec room, 20’x20’ or 400 sq. feet. It has absolutely no problem cooling that space whatsoever. This is a dual hose system. Important to know for several reasons. One hose is dedicated to exhaust the heat from both the air and that produced by the unit itself. That is the same be it a one or two hose system. The other hose is an intake hose. You do NOT have to use it per the manufacturer. So why use it? A lot of sellers talk about “back pressure” but that is not what we cared about at all. We wanted the ability to pull in cool air at night as well as to bring in clean air and not just recycle the same inside air over and over. There are more reasons too, live in for example AZ, NV, TX it might well be better to use it as a single hose unit during daylight hours and only use the intake when it gets below say 95F. You can always use both all the time I just try to save on electricity is all. *NOTE for those new to portables you cannot use this or any other air conditioner for that matter unless you vent the heat out. Using the intake hose optional, the exhaust required always. As for electricity this unit uses 3/4 what our old units do, did. The standardized system to rate electrical usage is the EER scale. A rating of 10 is considered to be very good. This unit scored an EER of 11.0 no less. I found nothing else out there that could beat it. Just swapping out the one old unit chopped $30 off our avg monthly electric bill. FYI it uses a standard wall plug and draws 10.8 amps no need for anything electrical to be done. As for sound it is so much quieter than either our old soleus or Frigidaire, granted both are going on 8 years old. Used to have crank up the television to near max volume but not with this unit. It is stated to have a noise level on high of 56db which is basically the level of noise from box fan. A nice unexpected bonus no doubt. We typically don’t have much in terms of humidity but even on those few days with dew points in the low 60’sF not a problem. The unit does a good job exhausting out all the water vapor so no leaks, containers to dump or drain. Having used this unit now for several months we will be replacing the other old unit we have with this exact same model as the first impressed us that much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Energy Efficient, very Quiet and Cool Great! I have another portable A/c unit with only a single hose and it just does cool things down plus I hate having to always empty the tank. I wish I knew before that a dual hose a/c unit is the ONLY way to go. Google dual hose a/c verse single hose a/c for how it works. But trust me when I say DONT bother getting a single hose they don't work! This unit is the best DUAL hose one I have bought it is quiet and as auto drain or you can hook up a standard garden hose to the drain on the back if it is really humid so you never have to worry about draining a tank again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Whynter ARC-131GD Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner, 13000 BTU I purchased this a/c after doing much investigation. I have had it set up and working for two days now and am pretty happy. It is nothing fancy, but has some good features and puts out nice cold air. there is a drain plug that is higher than most (center of the unit). I looked for this in the event the auto evaporation did not work i can drain it out the window. We'll see if i need it and if it works. Anyway, some people complain about the noise. The compressor kicking on will take some getting used to at night. But any review that complains of the noise- well imagine your oustide air conditioner sitting next to you in a smaller package, yeah its noisy. But its not so bad you dont get used to it. anyway thus far its a good a/c unit and very easy to install. **Update July 14, 2013-- So this window unit has done an excellent job of cooling our upstairs bedroom. It is located above a two car uninsulated garage. About two weeks ago in the middle of the night the unit shut off. Too tired to look into I found out the water bucket had filled up. I emptied it (about 1 liter) and ran it the next night. It again filled and shut off. The humidity levels during this time were high. Chicago summers. Decided that it was time to put the higher drain plug to use. I originally put it on a platform and was going to run the hose out the window. But then decided to run the hose into a 5 gallon bucket. Each night we turn the unit on around 7pm and off around 7am. the bucket is usually over half full. probably about three gallons. crazy. but it works great. I would buy this for the higher drain plug- it would be a pain to have to constantly drain it from a ground level drain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Adequate and Convenient I like to use free and natural cooling when available - open the windows at night and close in the morning. But that doesn't work every day and maybe doesn't last all day. So now when the inside temperature rises above 75 degrees I switch on the Whynter A/C. Installation was easy although I made an intake/exhaust custom adapter with weather stripping for a tight fit in my sliding window. It easily maintains 75 degrees in kitchen, living room and 1 bedroom while cycling on/off when the temperature outside is 95 degrees. Its not quiet, but no adjustment for conversation or TV volume is necessary while its running. When August is over, I'll just roll it into a closet until its needed next July. Adequate and very convenient. The control (remote for 10 feet or so if you wish) provides all combinations of functions and speeds one might expect.
