You ask a good question and the answer was a little misleading. This portable AC unit like ALL AC units you going to find will have a cooling duct and a hot air duct. Obviously you want to cool the room so you would be interested in the cooling air duct to do so. In the meanwhile, you have a hot air duct on the AC unit. It is the hot air duct you are asking whether it should be vented through a window. While it doesn't necessarily need to be vented through a window, it most certainly needs to be vented somewhere otherwise you this portable AC unit like all AC units, will be cooling and heating your room at the same time.. And that wont cool your room down. So yes, you need to vent the hot air using the ventilation hoses they give you. And to keep your AC unit from overheating, you cannot bent or crimp the exhaust line without risk to overheating your unit. They also don't want you to angle the vent hose by more than 45 degrees or block the vent, or extend the length of the vent line or you risk overheating the unit. You may want to look at the installation manual. Gives you all the good info you need for installation. Have you looked at how loud this unit will be. Might want to check that out as well while you are shopping. If it is load as a lawnmower, you might want to look at something else. So no, you don't need a window, but you need somewhere to vent the hot air coming out. Read Less

what size unit should I get?

I have a 12 + 12 bedroom to cool. The door is always open 8 inches to let the animals in and out of the bedroom. If we don't do this they will wake us up wanting to get in. We are afraid to get something that's not big enough to cool the bedroom because of the open door. What size would you recommend. We also want something we don't have to empty. What model would you recommend that's energy efficient. I was looking at the Whynter 8000 BTU eco-friendly model.
Thank you,

You should start off with the amount of square footage you need to cool. Which according to your measurements, you have 144 sq ft to cool. Given that size, it sounds like an office or bedroom. Next I'd consider where the heat was coming from. Is the room on the western side of the house (where the afternoon sun beats on the exterior all, a lot of windows, have a lot of electronics running that can warm a room, leaky windows, or have no central air. If you have a source of heat like one of the aforementioned, you might consider increasing the square footage you are trying to cool to compensate for the additional load. Also if you keep the door open, you are also cooling the exterior hallway, so be sure to include the square footage of the hallway in your square footage calculation or you may undersize your unit for the true area and load you are trying to cool. You don't want to buy an ant that doesn't have enough to move a rubber tree plant right, no matter how high your hopes might be.
The next thing is you have to plan how you going to vent the hot air exhaust from your unit out of the room. The installation guide can give you more instructions on that, but yes, you will need to vent the hot air outside the room you trying to cool.
Lastly, check the decibel ratings of the unit to make sure it is not as load as a lawnmower.
Good luck and Keep your Cool!! . Read Less

Answer:
In regards to the open door issue, just hang a sheet or curtain on a tension rod in the door frame. This will help prevent the cool air from escaping the room through the open door. Your pets can easily come through the curtain if the door is left partially open.

The water will drain "continuously" by gravity so you will have to keep that in mind when running the hose. In the case the hose gets pinched, clogged by dust ball, or basically fails to drain the water, you will lose your continuous mode of draining and will have to resort to manual which requires elbow grease and emptying your portable AC drip pan by hand using pots, cups, rags, or by whatever means necessary. All this water that needs to be drained came from the air in the room. It just accumulates on the AC. Read Less

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Wouldn't bother. * Not too big and fits in the room well. * Searched for this air conditioner with the "quiet" filter. It is not quiet, but that may be because portable air conditioners are entirely inside, whereas a window air condition, that has the same listed decibel rating, seems to be quieter because some of the noise goes outside. * Self-evaporative function works well, we have had the unit in operation for three weeks, and haven't had to empty the tank yet, although the recent, fall weather has not been exceptionally humid, either. * Puts out a lot of air, but doesn't completely cool our bedroom as well as our old window unit despite being 2000 btu more. * More expensive and lower energy rating than an equivalent-btu window unit. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Texas air The unit was simple enough to install. My 16 yr old son did it. He still runs a fan for his BR but no complaints because the room is actually cold now upstairs! July 12, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by I would not recommend for an apartment dweller This unit was easy to assemble, and does cool my room, which is why I bought it. However, I'm returning it as soon as I can to my local store. It puts out so much water through the clear plastic hose that I would need to buy a giant bucket to catch it. For the moment, it's draining into a giant plastic water bottle, which I empty regularly. Secondly, I read that sometimes the unit will stop cooling and switch to fan only when you need to drain the small valve at the bottom. It took 2 weeks before I had to empty it, but since then has been almost daily. The unit is too heavy to lift in order to drain, so my thought was to perch it on top of something high, then just let the valve empty into a bucket. It's just been a lot of work so far, and friends tell me they have A/C units that don't require trips to the kitchen daily to dump water. So it's going back. October 14, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great find! The assembly was a little difficult with one person but once it was set up, it worked like a charm. The noise can be a little bothersome (until you get used to it) but it quickly cools the room and hasn't impacted my energy bill too greatly. I highly recommend it! September 15, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Space saving coldness We use four of these for the offices and 2 for the conference room. We are in a very old and protected structure so we can't install central or window air. All six have been working as hoped. More than enough to handle the space they are being used in. Much more quiet than a window a/c. We will be getting 3 more for the general cubicle areas. August 1, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Terrible Its not that this didn't work very well, it didn't work at all. Followed all directions, guidelines and troubleshooting and it would cycle occasionally (very loudly) but not once did any remotely cool air come out. Gave it a week to kick in. Fortunately Home Depot took it back with no problem but the whole experience was so frustrating and disappointing. July 7, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Reliable Hose was difficult to install without duct tape. Perhaps we just received a quirky set. Otherwise awesome for our one-room rec room. August 4, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent product It cost a little more than others but the product was well made. September 2, 2014
