Questions & Answers

how much clearance is required for the vent?

how much clearance is required for the vent?
Asked by: imagine
This unit is designed to sit tight against the wall. However, it unit could be mounted off the wall some small distance as long and you remember that it is designed to vent through a wall no thicker than 9". Every inch it is mounted away for the wall in one less inch available to the vent to extend through the wall. It is always best to install these things according to manufacturers instructions--against the wall. Additionally, the authority inspecting your installation is probably going to insist it be installed according to manufacturers instructions.

The pdf instructions have zero information on the thermostat for some reason? Does the thermostat have a timer built in for the unit turning itself off and on automatically at specific times?
Asked by: RemRem
No timer, but it does have a wired external thermostat that you can mount on the side of the unit or on a wall.

Can this be installed in a basement?
Asked by: Joe
This unit can only be installed on an exterior wall that is adjacent to the out-of-doors. This unit is vented directly out the back of the unit to the out of doors and away from living space. Typical basement wall does not meet this criteria.

How noisy is it?

Is it too noisy to have in a bedroom (former garage turned into a guest bedroom)
Asked by: curious
I would consider this unit very quiet. There is some minor metal expansion and contraction ticking sound but you are not going to need to raise the TV volume to cover it.

14,000 BTU/Hr Direct-Vent Furnace Natural Gas Heater with Wall or Cabinet-Mounted Thermostat is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 97.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small but hot For a 14k btu unit, this heater pumps out a good amount of heat for a semi insulated 23'x23' garage. It brought the garage to 84° when it was 39° outside. Installation was easy, it took me 4 hours because I wanted the vent to look clean on the outside. I mounted a small fan($20) 3' from heater to distribute the hot air. Con Where the gas is going in, there should be a cut out in the housing to bring a pipe straight in.

This gas heater is easy to install and provides warmth without overheating the room. The thermostat makes sure that you have constant heat at the right time. I have one in my bedroom and wanted the same brand for my living room. I live in a tiny house so this heater is perfect for small spaces as it doesn't make you feel confined. In addition to providing excellent, cost-effective heat, it has modern and clean lines that go with any decor. It is also easy to clean. The Hope Depot is the ONLY place that has the Williams gas heater at this great price. I will get one more for my other bedroom for sure.

It does not keep the area an even temp but has to be adjusted relative to outside temps. We are heating an area smaller than what it's rated for in a very well insulated home without drafts. We had it professionally installed and placed the thermostat in the recommended location. Also, this model WILL NOT accept a blower. The listing states that there is an optional blower you can purchase and it does work with the higher BTU version but there are no "punch-outs" on this model to allow any blower to be installed.

I purchased this furnace to replace an 18 year old Williams furnace that was much the same. The only difference between the two that I could see, was that the new one has a thermostat that is separate from the actual unit which is an overall improvement, I think. I attempted to have the old one serviced, but the repair person said the parts he needed to access were sealed up and not accessible to do maintenance on. He found that annoying and frustrating. I read the review on the optional blower unit that comes from Williams and decided a wire rack with a cheap oscillating fan would function the same as the blower unit and cost less...so that's what I did. It may not look as aesthetically pleasing as the Williams blower unit, but it does the job of distribution the heat throughout the room, and I don't much care how it looks in the shop. I like the furnace because it doesn't require electricity to work, and it doesn't take up a lot of space. It heats my 400 square foot shop just fine. Also, I couldn't find many alternatives out there. As long as you have access to natural gas, and a good place to vent the furnace, I would recommend this unit for anyone who has a garage or shop they want to heat. The flame is adjustable and so is the pilot and might need adjusting upon installation. The instructions that come with the unit are pretty clear in that regard.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would recomend this heater First off Williams does a poor job of packaging, the cabinet is right on top with no protection, be sure to check for damage! If you convert this heater to LP gas you drop down to 10,000 BTU, they state this in the conversion kit inst. ONLY. The template for the hole it came out a little low, but made it work. The thermostat works good they tell you where the Wht+Red wire go, but not on the unit, I put the Wht wire on the top empty post. I wish Williams would do a better job of packaging cause this is a good little unit.Hope this helps you out GL Tom

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, easy installation, but it's noisy This is a good product, works well, installed pretty easily. I don't have the fan option, which forces room air thru the unit to distribute the heat faster/evenly. But even without the fan the convection action of the heat (hot air rising) still actually makes quite a breeze coming out of the top. And it's HOT! It works very well in regards to heating the room air, even despite the fact that it does so with a heat exchanger (the flame doesn't come in contact with room air, only the outside air is heated, and the heat in that air is coupled to the room air without direct contact using a radiator inside the unit. In this way no combustion gasses like carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide will be generated inside the room, they are all exhausted to the outside). Also make sure to close the doors and windows so that as the heat slowly comes down from the ceiling it doesn't go out the top of an open door way. If you have a ceiling fan that will help distribute the heat faster. Note that the first time you turn it on it will burn off the oily film that's on the metal surfaces, and it makes quite a smell. I even wiped it down with alcohol first, but it still made quite a stink. Open the windows and let it run for a couple of hours. The only real gripe I have about it is that it's really noisy when it turns off. It clangs and bangs as the metal cools and shrinks, much like your car does after you turn it off, only much louder. The instructions say this problem could be due to being mounted to a slightly bowed wall (I'm assuming this means that the metal structure is being stressed and pulled by the mounting hardware, so that when the metal expands or shrinks thru heating cycles it tends to pop in and out of shape). I'm an engineer and have tried everything to stop the noise, at one point making it virtually "float", making sure the mounting hardware wasn't pulling it this way or that. I even loosened the mounting of the vent to the outside of the house to make sure that wasn't pushing or pulling it. But alas, it still clicks and bangs loudly when cooling, but luckily it isn't as loud when heating up. I haven't given up trying to calm this noise, but I took back the first one thinking it was faulty and this second one has the same issue so I can only assume it's not loud because it's broken. On top of all that, I replaced the drywall in this area before the install to get rid of a poor previous patch, so everything behind the heater is new and flat. I got a good deal on it because it was (is?) being discontinued, and got it for far less than the normal price. I'm OK with the noise only because it was such a deal. If I find the solution to this noise, I'll report back. I haven't read about any other major noise issues, so maybe it still is my walls that are somehow to blame. After all the experiments I've done I can't see how, but I'm still open. If there were no noise or even only the slight ticking of expanding/contracting metal that one might expect from a heater, then I would have given this heater an Excellent A+++ rating.

This heater is quiet and works great, produces alot of heat for the size of flame on the burner. I wasn't sure that it would be large enough when buying it but now know that it is more than enough for my house.
