It should have been in the box with the heater. If not, you can use any low voltage wired thermostat. Home Depot has several you can buy.

Answer:
No because it vents through an exterior wall (the vent includes supply air and combustion gases). Assuming that a basement is completely below grade, it would not be posdible to vent the device.

Customer Reviews

14,000 BTU/Hr Direct-Vent Furnace Natural Gas Heater with Wall or Cabinet-Mounted Thermostat is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 86.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Williams wall-mounted gas heater This unit was a replacement for an old heater that was ~50 years old. This unit mounts ON the interior side of an exterior wall with a 9" hole for the vent. It is intended to stand on the floor (in my case this was not possible because the floor below was a stairway). It is possible to mount a brace on the wall to support the device, although may not be recommended by the mfr. I was able to use gas fittings from the old unit (with proper inspection, for leaks, etc.) making installation much easier. Once the gas line was securely installed, I was able to light the pilot light, and started the furnace by turning up the thermostat. There have been no operational problems at start-up. The unit was delivered with the legs significantly bent during shipping, requiring some modification. The exterior cabinet was slightly bent. Installation requires putting a hole through the exterior wall, 9" diameter. I was able to use a Sawzall™ for this because the exterior wall was 5" thick at the job site. Thicker walls will be more challenging. My opinion is that the mounting to the wall could be improved (4 screws that are difficult to reach during install). The instruction manual is not very well written in some places: For example, the unit has a manual spark device for igniting the pilot light, but the instructions have no diagram showing where this is located on the gas regulator! Overall, I am very happy with this device. The biggest challenge to installation was preparing the mounting wall after removing the old device. The price, ~$580 is reasonable. The design of the unit is far better than the old device with repsect to ventilation and installation. I expect operation will be better as well. I have no experience with warranty, so I am not able to comment.

This heater is quiet and works great, produces alot of heat for the size of flame on the burner. I wasn't sure that it would be large enough when buying it but now know that it is more than enough for my house.

I purchased this furnace to replace an 18 year old Williams furnace that was much the same. The only difference between the two that I could see, was that the new one has a thermostat that is separate from the actual unit which is an overall improvement, I think. I attempted to have the old one serviced, but the repair person said the parts he needed to access were sealed up and not accessible to do maintenance on. He found that annoying and frustrating. I read the review on the optional blower unit that comes from Williams and decided a wire rack with a cheap oscillating fan would function the same as the blower unit and cost less...so that's what I did. It may not look as aesthetically pleasing as the Williams blower unit, but it does the job of distribution the heat throughout the room, and I don't much care how it looks in the shop. I like the furnace because it doesn't require electricity to work, and it doesn't take up a lot of space. It heats my 400 square foot shop just fine. Also, I couldn't find many alternatives out there. As long as you have access to natural gas, and a good place to vent the furnace, I would recommend this unit for anyone who has a garage or shop they want to heat. The flame is adjustable and so is the pilot and might need adjusting upon installation. The instructions that come with the unit are pretty clear in that regard.

It does not keep the area an even temp but has to be adjusted relative to outside temps. We are heating an area smaller than what it's rated for in a very well insulated home without drafts. We had it professionally installed and placed the thermostat in the recommended location. Also, this model WILL NOT accept a blower. The listing states that there is an optional blower you can purchase and it does work with the higher BTU version but there are no "punch-outs" on this model to allow any blower to be installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So done with electric heat Previously we had a gas heater that had no vent. Fumes were pretty bad. Replaced it with an electric heater that spun the meter off the wall. Decided to try this one. Arrived quickly and no damage. Very attractive and bonus surprise was the wall mount thermostat. Very skilled husband installed it in minimal time. No noise, no fuse. He likes the pilot light. I will have to update in a month and see the difference in the electric bill but I am certain it will pay for itself in record time.

It's one of the best looking things in my shop. I really like the separate thermostat. Installation was pretty easy, and the included instructions were clear. I had to call the Williams company about a missing part. They shipped it immediately with no hassle.
