How do you install this vent into the wall?

Asked by: Suru
In one regard this question is difficult to answer. If you own a single story home you cannot install the vent through the wall. You need a minimum of 4 feet clearance above the furnace. It could be wall vented if there is sufficient attic space above the room your planning to put this in. But in almost every case it MUST be vented through the roof. If through wall is your only option you need to shop for a model that is rated for "Direct Vent.

Where does one go to get it installed

I'd like to purchase this heating unit but I'm having difficulty locating someone to install it. Does HD have recomended installers
Asked by: beannie
I believe HD can refer installers for you. Depending on if you only replacing a wall unit or this is a completely new install. you may need a few different professionals. If this is a new install you'll need a gas certified installer to run the gas pipe to it. Also a roofer to install the vent stack. Both are aside from the actual installer of the furnace itself. I did almost the entire installation myself, except the roof stack and only because at my age, have developed a sort of vertigo and cannot do steep roofs, (mine is very steep). Luckily my son in law is a roofer by trade and was able to complete that portion. Another consideration is the electrical. The unit comes with a regular plug in cord that exits the lowest part of the unit. But an option is what's known as HARDWIRE. I opted to hardwire mine, which simply means it's connected directly to the breaker panel. I didn't want the cord laying on the floor. But if you opt to hard wire, might need an electrician. Hopefully all this doesn't scare you from this unit, works very well and is far more efficient than my previous unit. The furnace is not difficult to place in the room you want it for but is a bit heavy. Once placed against the wall it only need a couple brackets to secure it. Also it is not shipped with the exhaust venting required to exhaust through the roof. I ordered the vent kit on-line from a company called ZORO for just over $50.00. The kit gets you about 4 1/2 ft above the furnace. If it needs to go higher (through an attic) you may need additional pieces to complete the vent install. All other parts are available at HD. The furnace requires 6 inch oval double wall vent kit and must be at least 4 ft high. Above 4 ft converts to double wall 4 inch round. There is no way to tell you how high the round needs to go because the roof pitch and height determines how tall the exhaust stack must be. The instruction pack that comes with the furnace explains all the material and requirements for this. Again this all sounds much worse than it really is. Just be aware that additional costs of installation could probably run between $300 and $500. If you need a gas line installed, most any plumber (gas certified) can do this. If you want electrical hard wire (instead of using the plug) pretty much any electrician can do this fairly cheap. Probably the most difficult is a roofer for installing the stack. You want a good well experienced roofer to assure you don't wind up with any leaks. I hope this helps. I find this furnace to be of VERY high quality and highly recommend it. I'm quite pleased with mine.

one sided heat or two, fan? vetrans discount/

does it heat from one side or two? does it have a fan accessory? can I use vetrans discount to purchase? does it require kit for high elevation?
Asked by: tntmac
I can't answer as to high elevation. I know there is a model rated specifically for high elevation but I don't know what the difference is. This unit has a fan and blows from the lower front. But it is built so it can also vent from a side or rear. The side vent option gives more heating area. The rear vent is intended to be used in the event you want to install the unit within a wall and thus can blow heat into the room behind as well. You will need to order the vent kit if you want to use it that way. The side venting requires no special material except for the grill needs to be ordered separately. Also there is a booster blower unit available and is helpful for the rear venting option but not necessary. In all situations you cannot block the front vent. To determine which unit is specified for high altitude I would recommend you log on to the Williams web site (as I did before I purchased). Once there you can find the appropriate model number for high altitude use. I recall while on the web site there were several models that specified high altitude. You don't mention if you require a unit for natural gas or propane but the web site will also help you make that selection. Be sure to read them carefully to ensure to order the proper gas supply accommodations for your area. I hope this has been helpful. Also, I cannot answer as to the veterans discount. You need to check that with your local store. I have heard the Home Depot had discontinued the V.D. but that most stores are still honoring it.

Customer Reviews

60,000 BTU/Hr Forsaire Counterflow Top-Vent Wall Furnace Natural Gas is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for old school spaceheater replacement We replaced a space heater which stood out into the room with this one. Professional installation/permits are required where we are, and he was able to attach it to a chimney liner per our local code. This heater really puts out, and is more efficient than a gravity space heater. The greatest benefit was the extra room it offered in the small apartment. The only negative is the packaging. Although the cardboard SHOULD be enough to handle shipment the first one I ordered came damaged from rough handling. Other reviews indicate the same issue, so CHECK IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE STORE!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simplicity in ordering On line order was simple and shipping (to store) was much quicker than anticipated. There was some minor damage to some components. I'm not sure if this occurred due to rough handling or if the manufacturers packing failed. I didn't mention it because the parts were easily adjusted and will not depreciate the appearance or functionality. Time was also a factor in not bringing this up as it required installation and re-scheduling associates was not a viable option.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not recommend Item was shipped later than what I was first told. The shipping date kept changing. UPS delivered the item three days after it arrived at their facility in my town. They forgot to take it out for delivery right away. When the item arrived, parts were not assembled correctly, fan was bent, and lots of lose screws. I didnt return the item because I needed it for the arrival of our new baby. I installed the furnace and it would make really loud noises where the fan is at. I thought the loud noises would go away. I tried fixing it but now the heater/furnace won't turn on. If item is going to be shipped incorrectly assembled, it might as well just be shipped in pieces.
