Answer:
The Winix 5300 works best when on the ground. The air is taken in from the front and side and it goes out from the top.

Answer:
I do not know the answer to your question. I am not sure if physical filters can accomplish that. I do know that this air cleaner does a great job, especially with the extra charcoal filter. (see earlier comments about adding another filter)

Answer:
I doubt it. While it captures a good deal of dust, I have dogs, and it doesn't do anything for the "doggy smell".

The odor control carbon filter sheets in the Winix 5500 can help reduce formaldehyde odors, but it will not eliminate them.

Answer:
No, you should never try to wash the Hepa filter. It is not designed to be washed. The filters are not that expensive just replace each year.

Answer:
No, the true HEPA filter should not be washed and reused. Dependent on the environment, it is recommended that you change the carbon pre-filter every three months and the true HEPA filter every 12 months.

Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 191 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Air cleaner The unit does a great job taking dust and dog hair out of the room. This is in a bedroom with three dogs. Unfortunately, doesn't do anything about doggy smell. April 5, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by I like it I have noticed the musty smell is leaving my home. It is very quiet. I gave it 4 stars because I haven't had it a year. If its still working as well then, it can have 5. Home Depot had the best price and free shipping was so great. Very happy with my purchase. March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A Winix air cleaner The filter is quiet and effective for removing odors and allergins. I have had a unit for a year and just bought an additional unit for another room March 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by love, love, love them I bought two of them, one for our bedroom and one to handle the living room and dining room. They work wonderfully. I have allergies and asthma and since turning them on I have not needed any meds while in my home. I have two dogs and a cat who all shed and add to my allergy discomfort and these take care of it also we have been having some dampness in the basement and mold and these have helped greatly. I love they change speed when needed automatically so no effort from me needed. On the lowest setting you can not even hear it running. February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by One sweet air filtration machine I got this for my man cave, 18ft by 22 ft. ... in the past i have bought at least 8 air purifiers for smoke. They were either to noise (i wear hearing aids) or they just didn't work. This machine is very quiet, even on high it doesn't bother me, i can watch tv and or carry on a conversation with no noise problems, i have it sitting 4 ft from the table where i sit, i keep it on auto and when it needs to go to high it does it by itself, awesome. i am 100 plus percent happy with this machine. Also it is attractive and not gawdie to look at.. If you are like me very fussy about air quality then don't hesitate to buy this, you can't go wrong...i have had mine know for about 2 months... Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome! I purchased to help for smoke, it doesn't. I knew it didn't, wanted to try anyways. SO if you are purchasing for smoke you will need to spend a lot more on a smoke specific product. BUT. The product works GREAT. I moved into new house. Set on auto it turns on when it detects something. Heater for the first time, Stove. Oven. Air sprays. Even when I brought the dogs and cats in the house the first time it kicked into HIGH. I was amazing to see it function so well. It would turn on randomly and I would look around and wonder what changed, and always realized there was a change, even when I came in the house after yard work, it picked that up too! Highly recommend this product. I will but a 2nd unit for upstairs eventually. December 23, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Winix 5300 Although the 5300 was backordered, it was worth the wait. It is a quiet and powerful machine that seems to do a very good job. One of the reasons for buying this unit, besides its price vs. value, was the ability to add an extra carbon filter. According to several professional reviewers, the filter combo of two carbon filters and a hepa filter resulted in superior air filtration over machines costing two to three times as much. I am very pleased with the machines abilities and feel it is doing an excellent job. It is rated as much quieter than many other units because of its brushless motor. My only wish would be that it was simpler to switch from auto to manual mode. You have to push the mode button repeatedly to go through the selection process. By the the way it is easy to switch off the plasma wave by simply holding down the power button for a few seconds until hearing a beep and seeing the light for it turn off. All in all, It is a quality machine for a reasonable price. January 18, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by At first GREAT, but then... I don't like reviewing items until I've used them for a period of time because you never know what can happen. When I received this it was WONDERFUL! There is really nothing to it. Basically unpack it, plug it in and let it go. Plus it comes with 4 filters. I turned it on in a guest room where there are 2 litter boxes, before I left for work, and when I got home, late that night, I could immediately tell the difference in the air. I have 3 cats and I was hoping it would help with the litter box smell. I clean the litter box out 3 or 4 times a day but I can still smell it when I approach that room. Now the smell was almost gone. As days went on I could definitely tell the difference in the dust pile up...or should I say lack thereof. Usually I have dust build up almost the next day to two days after cleaning. I didn't see dust build up for A VERY LONG time. I did not dust in that room, on purpose, just to see how long it would take and I want to say it was almost a month before I could see any hint of dust. I was ecstatic. After 3 months, I changed the filter and boy was the old one beat up. I attached a picture of the old one and the replacement. WOW! So now I'm at the 'but then...'! After changing the filter I just don't feel that it is working the same as it did the first 3 months. I've checked to make sure I have the filter in correctly and the cover is on correctly. Before this I would spray hair spray in the room adjacent and would hear it go on to full power (I keep it on Auto). If one of my cats go #2 :-) I would hear it kick on to full power. I just do not notice that anymore, I think the smell is back and the dust is still okay but I feel like it's building up a little faster. It could just be me so I am not sure if this is really a fair review. Again, I WAS IN LOVE until I changed the filter. I really would prefer that the smell of the litter boxes go away more than the dust issue but I knew it might not work as good as the model that is specifically for pets however this one was the deal of the day buy so I jumped on it. I do agree with other reviewers that it would be nice to have a handle at the top...I can see where one could have been added. But it's not a deal breaker. Also for those who say it is loud, when it is on full power yes it can be but not to where it is annoying AND I haven't seen one like this that is not loud at full power. Would I recommend it...sure I would. I would tell someone if they saw it on the deal of the day to go for it like I did. I can swallow paying the lower price for something that might not work as I hope or is intended to before paying full price. So that is my story...I hope it helped but I doubt it did! Have a great day everyone! March 26, 2015
