Answer:
The main hole is a 3/4" hole. I suggest you use a 1/4" drill bit as a pilot hole followed by the 3/4" drill bit.
Measure from the door carefully as you only get one chance.
The drill bit required for the plate and holder is 1/8".

Do you need a door that is even to the floor for this to work? My exterior garage side door is 2 inch above the interior garage floor.

It works well and was somewhat easy to install. It is however a pain to bolt and unbolt all the time. This club is only for when someone is home for you can not get into your house with your house key when this is bolted. Any door with a threshold, will easily open and close because the "plate" is not in the way of the bottom of your door. The downside is the finish color options of antique brass (also sold at homedepot.com) or bright brass. The antique brass is less noticeable (more subtle). I did not use the "holder" for when its not in its secured position. Instead, I drilled another hole (behind the door when the door is open) and topped it with oak. Photos included.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HD had the best price I'm a cop and I've seen the burglary trends for entry points into homes. In my opinion, there are three types of burglars: 1) The sick kind that are stealthy and will enter your home whether you are there or not 2) The stealthy kind that will check to see if you're home before going around back to find a way in 3) The smash and grab. The Door Club works great for the smash and grab group. This group primarily checks first to see that no one is home. Once this is established they will kick in the front door and grab all available items in view. Alarms do not deter this group because they base their M.O. on the fact that they are in the house no longer than 3-5 minutes. The drawback to the Door Club is the homeowner has to have another point of entry, in most cases through the garage. If the garage is your entry point, consider a battery back up for the garage door opener in case of power loss. Be sure to replace the door hinge screws. Most homes come with 1/2" wood screws to hold the hinges. I replaced mine with 2 1/2" screws. In addition, I added a door bar that goes under the door handle and wedges against the floor. Since my front door had the side glass window I replaced that with polycarbinate so a burglar can't simply break the glass and reach insde. Most burglars will knock at your front door. They really don't want confrontation because of enhanced penalties. I purchased a Samsung Smartcam to help me out. This camera is wireless, has 2 way audio and will notify me on my phone within 2 seconds of it detecting motion. It then launches the app on my phone and by the time someone knocks on my door I am able to talk and hear them. They have no idea if I'm home or across town but in any case I've already got a picture of their face. Aside from that, I've got the normal house alarm and a couple other goodies I can't discusse.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 Star top quality and relatively easy to install I have installed five of them on my exterior doors and recommended them to my friends. The hardest part is drilling the large hole in the floor, which varies from wood to concrete. The peace of mind is huge, especially if someone is home alone. The feature of using one side to let the door open partially (about 3-4") so you can see and talk, but still rendering the door unable to be forced is very useful. Then at night, the other side doesn't permit the door to open at all.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Value but Quality Issues. They arrived right on time (we bought 3). The company in my opinion has Quality control issues. First, the glue was dried up. They opened up the package and put new glue in 2 of the 3. In one package the 4 each #8 X 1" screws were missing. Minor (but irritating) issues. Not sure if it was originally like this or happened during the glue replacement, but the bright brass finish was scuffed up. We decided to paint them to match the doors. Ours are set in a concrete floor. Take your time and drill accurately. You only get one shot. That being said, they are very sturdy and well worth the price. They give a great sense of security when sleeping. I would recommend this product to friends and family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well made and solid-strong I had to go thru my carpet as I'm sure many others will....cutting an X into the rug was a pain in the butt..after I did that I got a piece of plastic pipe about 1" inside diameter and about an inch long..as I carefully pushed back the carpet points I inserted the pipe to keep the carpet separated so as not to interfere with drilling..( I measured exactly 2" from door...I drilled down 2 &1/2 inches with a 3/4 inch drill bit...I then laid the sub-floor plate ON TOP OF THE CARPET, inserted floor insert ...drilled deep pilot holes, and screwed it thru the rug and well into the sub-floor ! I was able to determine before hand that my door would have the necessary clearance...finished job is perfect..there's even enough room for my carpet snake to fit against the bottom of the door to keep out the draft...as far as being able to reverse the club so that the door will only open a couple of inches...I installed a 200 degree door peep-hole and ordered a pair of Chandler intercoms...one outside ..and the other inside my home, so as to be able to safely converse with whoever is at my door..that way I can keep my storm door locked...It all works together very nicely !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy Door Security Installation took about 45 minutes to install three...one in hardwood (about 5 minutes) and two in cement (had to use a special bit with hammer drill) . I think these will increase security in my home immensely...especially my two doors in the basement...Would definitely recommend purchasing this product...
