Shelf life

If I buy 4 gals. and don't use two of them right away what is the shelf life? Will they still be good 2-3 yrs. later?
Asked by: Joe
Wolman F&P Finish and Preservative has a shelf life of 3 years. We recommend applying it within 2-3 years of purchase for best results.

can i add a red tint

Asked by: joey
Thank you for your interest in Rust-Oleum's products. Unfortunately, we do not recommend adding tint to the F&P Cedar Exterior Wood Stain. It will take away from the performance of the product and take away it's adherence properties.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Met and exceeded my expectations. Wolmans's F & P Preservative met and exceeded my expectations. The product spread easily, was low odor, seemed to penetrate into the wood well, produced a deep cedar tone (maybe a shade too dark) and looks attractive. The only negatives were is somewhat dark cedar tone, the long dry time and, if using previously treated or finished wood, the surface must be very thorougly sanded to allow the product to penetrate. But the positives overcome these negatives and the product is very satisfactory and will leave your wood, especially cedar, in great condition. Ordering and shipping went extremely well and the product arrived in just a few days at a reasoanble cost for shipping.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent product for the money Had treated half of our cedar fence with penofin (cedar color) and have used penofin in the past. Decided to try this, primarily because of cost (half the price) and also reviews. Used the cedar color. Penetration seemed better than the penofin. Application was very even and smooth. Cleanup was the same as for any oil based application. The color, however, was considerably darker than the penofin. Penofin remained a bright reddish golden/yellow after applying. The F&G product was more of a tan / brownish dull color. I really like the penetrating qualities, however. Living in southeast NM, with extreme heat and low humidity, I am more concerned with the protection quality. Next time I will use the clear color.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Look no further, I already did the research, as good as Sikkens if not better & more reasonably priced After doing months of research & speaking to friends, family, coworkers & painting contractors, I chose this product after I pressure washed & sanded my deck lightly. I applied it according to the instructions, I did however run out twice & had to re-order twice since it is sold online only to NJ. The coverage info is way off, but I should have known better since my deck has never had anything put on it since I built it.Just the deck surface is 16' X 32' (512 square ft) & also I also stained the top rail & spindles. I ended up using just about 8 gallons. As per the instructions, you CAN NOT put a second coat on after it dries or it will look horrible since it does not penetrate the wood & lays on top & leaves a nasty sheen so I recommend you put a liberal non puddling coat on using a 3/8 nap roller & a brush on the spindles all at once. (forget about a sprayer, I tried it & wasted too much) Many of the past reviews helped me choose this product & I owe thanks to everyone. I stained the top side in the fall & the spindles a few months ago. My friend just used Sikkens & it was priced much higher, my father's neighbor also used it & said he needed a second coat as it seemed to fade fast. I guess time will tell how this product holds up, they say you will get an estimated 3 years out of it. So far, it is beading water like crazy & made it through a winter of snow & ice laying on it. Good luck, bottom line, I would recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This stuff rocks! I was very impressed with this stain. It applies very easily, the smell isn't overwhelming and for being oil-based, it's incredibly easy to clean up with soap and water. Don't hesitate to make this purchase. My porch looks like new once again!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good protection for decks. I have a large wood deck that is 14 years old that has always been treated with an oil based product. I elected to use this product after reading several good reviews and was pleased to find out it performed as recommended. The weathered wood absorbed the stain quickly and became water resistant. Drying time takes at least three days of dry weather which may be inconvenient. But. once dry, it provides excellent water and UV protection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wouln't use anything else on my wood deck and fence for the same money Good stuff. Used this on a deck and it came out great. Liked it so much I now paint a pressure treated fence and outbuilding with it. It seems to offer good protection. It is darker than I initially expected and in my opinion should be named chocolate, rather than cedar, but it still provides a natural look, only just on the browner side of things. The bonus to the extra pigment is that my deck doesn't turn grey anymore between applications every 3 to 5 years.(3 to 4 on horizontal surfaces with the option to go quickly over the uprights on future applications) . I just pressure wash each time and let it dry prior to spaying, rolling or brushing. Probably should use a vapor mask and surgical gloves if you have a large project and make sure you have 24 hours for it to set-up without rain. It can be a bit tacky for a week or so depending upon conditions but water beads right up on it after 24 hours. Wouldn't use it on a picnic table due to the warnings against eating off it. Get the 4 gallon case if priced close per volume to the 5 gallon buckets since they are apparently easier to ship without damage. I never got a case delivered leaking onto my front doorstep or dented and even repackaged by the shipper into new buckets, like I have with the 5 gallon buckets.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what I would recommend Sorry to say this product took almost 1 1/2 weeks to dry and it is still a little slippery when wet. I was told that once it was cured (72 hrs) it is no longer toxic. Then, why can't you use it on eating surfaces ? I returned 2 of 3 gallons and got the acrylic version and although it is the same color (cedar) listed on the label it turned out to be almost ORANGE where the oil version was a very dark brown. Ask questions about this product before using it or the acrylic version...Big difference between the two...and neither one was satisfactory.
