Questions & Answers

Can a 2gallon tank pump sprayer be used to spray on fence

Asked by: Memo
I didn't use a pump sprayer as I have a rail fence and was concerned about the drift into my neighbors yard and landscaping materials. A paint sprayer would have been faster (not recommending you use a 2-gallon pump sprayer) but I would have wasted a lot of product. On a solid fence, a commercial sprayer would work well (which you can rent or buy at a local hardware store). My experience is that you want to saturate the wood with the product rather than just covering it for appearances. I have a rough cut cedar rail fence, so I used a stiff paint brush and did it all by hand as I was then assured i completely saturated the wood. We have severe winter and summer sun, and low humidity (Front Range, Colorado) so protection and reduced fading was important.

How much stain do I need for a 1 sided fence approximately 160 linear feet.

I need to stain approx. 160 linear feet, 1 side. Is 1 gallon sufficient?

I asked the sales associate at Home Depot for estimating the amount I needed and they did an excellent job...Check with them.

Cleaning a previously stained fence

Have a 9 year old cedar fence that has been professionally cleaned and stained twice with a "semi-transparent penetrating pigmented sealer/stain" since it's original installation, the last time 4 years ago. Want to try to do the job myself this time. As far as prepping for staining, what product should I use to clean the fence?
Asked by: MotherGoose
I power washed my fence then applied the stain with a pump sprayer. My fence was also previously stained with an oil based stain, so I think it should work for you as well. The cedar color is darker than I thought it would be, but that might be because my fence was previously stained.

Will this darken incense cedar pickets?

Is the product going to darken the white shade of the incense cedar picket to a brown shade, or does it deepen the white to a pink/yellow/orange shade?
Asked by: Birch
Based on my experience it should darken it to a natural looking brownish tone. I didn't notice any odd color tints showing up. However, it will depend a lot on whether your surface is smooth or rough. When applied to a rough surface, it will darken it dramatically, in my case it went almost black. Not pretty.

F&P is intended for applying to Wolman Elite Wood (treated) decking which we used on our deck (which dried for several months). Per the instructions, I pre-treated the surface with Wolman Deck & Fence Brightener in order to open up the surface for the stain. In spite of the treatment, the stain didn't soak in as much as expected, and I had to wipe quite a bit off. Once that was done, though, the surface looks good and repels water, food stains, etc. I also applied to rough surfaced cedar fascia around the deck perimeter, and was disappointed the stain turned the wood a very unsightly black. In general, I'd give the stain high marks, given the problematic surfaces it was used on. I also ended up using only half the amount expected. Wolman recommends re-applying every three years. We'll see how it holds up over time. I would also add that the price beat anything locally available, and the free home delivery was a nice bonus.

The cedar is a bit darker than I thought but worked out well. The one thing I was not happy with is that one of the cans was not sealed properly and had lumps in it. I use it any way since I was in the middle of the job, but had to strain it through cheesecloth.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! F & P have a great product here. Looks really nice, though I will suggest if you are painting a new fence to paint it sooner rather than later having to pressure wash, etc, the old. Can see a difference between the new/old fence but it covered up nicely on the old fence with a second coat. (in the picture new fence is left to middle of pic and then the old fence - old fence has more of a glossy look to it) Started using an electric spray gun (Wagner) and that worked for about 5 feet of the 1700 sq. ft, - a lot of solids in the stain even after straining. Went out and bought a Husky $35 dollar air compressor "sprayer" and the thing worked perfectly. - though I did still strain the stain before use. Water beads and runs right off the fence now and it looks really good!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to apply and looks good. Ordered to cover new fence 8' x 64' board on board, 5 gallons covered the face side of the fence. Fence looks really nice. Blends in with the background better. Wife really likes the color. Used a combination of hand pump sprayer, brush, and roller. Used the sprayer to get the side edges and the face of the setback boards, used the brush to smooth it out, and used the roller for the face boards. Took a majority of the day to complete the job. The cover has no pour feature, think about getting a 5 gallon roller thingy, worked right from can. Used plastic container to scoop and poured into sprayer.
