I didn't use a pump sprayer as I have a rail fence and was concerned about the drift into my neighbors yard and landscaping materials. A paint sprayer would have been faster (not recommending you use a 2-gallon pump sprayer) but I would have wasted a lot of product. On a solid fence, a commercial sprayer would work well (which you can rent or buy at a local hardware store).

My experience is that you want to saturate the wood with the product rather than just covering it for appearances. I have a rough cut cedar rail fence, so I used a stiff paint brush and did it all by hand as I was then assured i completely saturated the wood. We have severe winter and summer sun, and low humidity (Front Range, Colorado) so protection and reduced fading was important. Read Less

I tried a sprayer first, but it didn't work well at all. I had good luck with a roller with a heavier nap and an old fashioned paint brush designed for stain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome! F & P have a great product here. Looks really nice, though I will suggest if you are painting a new fence to paint it sooner rather than later having to pressure wash, etc, the old. Can see a difference between the new/old fence but it covered up nicely on the old fence with a second coat. (in the picture new fence is left to middle of pic and then the old fence - old fence has more of a glossy look to it) Started using an electric spray gun (Wagner) and that worked for about 5 feet of the 1700 sq. ft, - a lot of solids in the stain even after straining. Went out and bought a Husky $35 dollar air compressor "sprayer" and the thing worked perfectly. - though I did still strain the stain before use. Water beads and runs right off the fence now and it looks really good!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to apply and looks good. Ordered to cover new fence 8' x 64' board on board, 5 gallons covered the face side of the fence. Fence looks really nice. Blends in with the background better. Wife really likes the color. Used a combination of hand pump sprayer, brush, and roller. Used the sprayer to get the side edges and the face of the setback boards, used the brush to smooth it out, and used the roller for the face boards. Took a majority of the day to complete the job. The cover has no pour feature, think about getting a 5 gallon roller thingy, worked right from can. Used plastic container to scoop and poured into sprayer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent product Wolmans F&P oil based transparent exterior stain worked very well. It spread easily and repels rain water as only oil can. I don't trust water based products for outdoors. I bought the color called cedar. Actually, this is the darkest of the stains, but looks nothing like cedar. It looks like dark motor oil, but is better because it has UV protection and mold killer added to it. I did three large outside stairways and a set of double porches, one over the other, and I still have about two gallons left so it goes a long ways. There was a previous dark stain on the wood and the Wolman's stain made it look a darker brown. But I also had a new board of pressure treated lumber and it hardly made it darker at all. The board still has a light natural look. So if you want color look elsewhere. I hope this review helps someone. I plan to buy more of this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I absolutely love the look of this stain on my fence! I spent hours researching products in stores and on-line. This product had very good reviews so I decided to give it a try. I couldn't be happier. My fence was about two years old and had lost almost all of its beautiful cedar color. I power washed it, gave it a few days to dry, and applied 10 gallons of the F&P Cedar stain and the look is amazing. It has a dark, rich look and I love that it shows all the wood grain beneath it. We had a good rain about 24 hours after application and it repelled the water very well. You can't go wrong with this product. I've had numerous compliments from my neighbors and I just applied it a few days ago.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product, easy to work with I used this stain on 27-year-old rough-sawn cedar lap siding, that was last stained 6 years ago. It was lightly power-washed and allowed to dry for 3 days before staining. Reading other users describe this stain as "dark", I thought I would try it, since I didn't mind if the outcome was dark brown & the price fit my budget. When applying this stain it does go on incredibly dark, but as you can see from the photo, it lightens up after just a few days. (photo is after 9 days of drying) This stain flows smoothly, covers/soaks in well, and is not too overpowering with VOC's. I used a brush on the siding, and a roller and brush on the deck (which is 20+ year old & pressure-treated). I got about 250 sq ft covered per gallon. Time will tell how it holds up to the sun and rain here in the mid-Atlantic.
